Chapter 7 - THE HOUSE ON WILLOW LANE

I called the police before I moved the car.

David wanted to follow me, but I told him to stay with Marcus.

The drive home stretched like a nightmare.

By the time I reached our street, patrol cars were parked along the curb.

Lily was safe in the kitchen with our neighbor, Mrs. Alvarez.

She had called emergency services after hearing the rear door open.

The stranger was gone.

Nothing appeared stolen.

One drawer in Marcus’s study had been emptied across the floor.

The intruder had ignored the laptop and the cash envelope beside it.

He had taken an old accordion folder labeled RESIDENCY.

I remembered Marcus keeping it for years.

It held letters, evaluations, and photographs from his first hospital job.

An officer asked whether anybody else had a key.

I nearly said no.

Then I remembered Rebecca's confidence at Room 614 and could no longer be sure of anything.

Lily sat at the kitchen island in dinosaur pajamas.

“Mommy, is Daddy in trouble?”

The question crushed me.

“Some grown-ups are trying to figure something out,” I said.

“Did Daddy do something bad?”

I knelt in front of her.

“I don't know everything yet.”

She studied me with the brutal honesty of eight-year-olds.

“That means yes sometimes.”

After midnight, Nora Kim finally agreed to meet me in a public diner.

She was smaller than I expected and wore a gray baseball cap.

She set an envelope between our coffee cups.

“Your husband thought the missing residency file could prove who started this.”

“Started what?”

“An unauthorized research project hidden inside the donor registry.”

I stared at her.

Nora pushed the envelope closer.

Inside was a photograph of Marcus standing beside David and Philip Voss at a fundraising gala.

A third man stood at the center.

He wore a white coat and smiled toward the camera.

Nora tapped his face.

“Dr. Adrian Kessler,” she said.

“He’s the one who signed off on every altered result.”

Then she turned the photograph over.

On the back, in Marcus’s handwriting, were four words.
