Chapter 12 - THE BACKUP PLAN

I read Lily's name once, then covered it with my palm.

Nobody in that room spoke.

Rebecca was crying silently.

Elena took the page and scanned it into a secure case file.

“This is not consent,” she said.

“It is an internal planning document, and we need to know who created it.”

The distinction mattered legally.

Emotionally, it changed nothing.

Somebody had looked at my eight-year-old child and imagined her as a solution to a problem she did not understand.

I went home and called Lily's school.

Only I and Mrs. Alvarez would be allowed to collect her until further notice.

Marcus stood in the kitchen doorway while I made the call.

“Claire, I didn't know they had listed her.”

“Then you should have told me when they first mentioned me.”

He accepted the accusation without defense.

That night his symptoms worsened.

His words blurred, and he stumbled against the counter.

I called his treating neurologist rather than guess what to do.

An ambulance took him to a different hospital at my request.

The medical team stabilized him and adjusted his care.

In the waiting room, I found myself praying for the man I was angriest with.

The contradiction made me feel hollow.

At dawn, David arrived.

He had been suspended pending the registry investigation.

“I deserve it,” he said.

“Do you?”

He sat a chair away from me.

“I changed those sample labels years ago.”

“Marcus told me.”

“I told myself no one would be harmed.”

“Someone always gets harmed when the truth is made optional.”

David nodded.

Then he handed me a sealed flash drive.

“I copied the access history before they locked me out.”

“Is it legal for you to give me that?”

“I don't know,” he admitted.

“Give it to Elena, not me.”

He agreed.

Before he left, he said the words I had waited weeks to hear from someone at the hospital.

“Kessler knew Marcus was sick, Claire.”

“He used that weakness to make Marcus carry the blame.”

My phone rang.

The caller was Elena.

“There's a court order being requested,” she said.

May you like

“Kessler's lawyers want to stop Lily from speaking to investigators.”
