Chapter 18 - THE FINAL SIGNATURE

The destruction authorization showed what somebody had wanted most.
Not a transplant.
Not even a convincing story.
They wanted the evidence gone before anyone independent could test it.
Investigators secured the remaining samples under formal procedures.
An outside laboratory examined what could appropriately be re-evaluated with verified consent.
The resulting findings did not solve every question.
They did show that documents attributing specimens to me contained samples that were not mine.
Separate evidence supported the conclusion that Lily's cheek swab had been collected without valid parental authorization.
And Daniel's supposed paternal link to Marcus was unsupported by the verified comparison obtained through proper consent.
Rebecca sat beside me when she received the news.
For months she had believed Marcus was Daniel's father.
Now she had to mourn a truth that had never existed.
“Who is his father?” she asked.
Elena shook her head.
“That question deserves a separate, legitimate investigation.”
Rebecca cried, and I held her hand.
I could not blame her for trusting people who claimed medical authority while her son was ill.
Voss resigned as counsel during the widening investigation.
Kessler's foundation lost access to the hospital's programs.
Authorities were reviewing potential falsification, privacy violations, and misuse of funds.
I avoided celebrating.
Investigations move more slowly than pain.
Some consequences would take months or years to settle.
Marcus called that evening.
“Did they tell you?”
“Yes.”
“I never had an affair with Rebecca.”
“I believe you.”
For a long time, neither of us spoke.
Then he asked the question I had known was coming.
“Does that change anything between us?”
I looked at the family photo above our fireplace.
“It changes one thing,” I said.
“I no longer think you betrayed me with another woman.”
He exhaled shakily.
“But you betrayed my trust in other ways.”
“I know.”
“And I don't know yet whether we can rebuild that.”
He accepted the answer.
A message arrived from Elena just after we ended the call.
She had obtained a record of the first authorization used in the scheme.
It predated Marcus's illness by almost ten years.
