Chapter 1 - THE LUNCH BAG

David’s fingers barely touched my elbow, but the look on his face made the hospital corridor tilt beneath me.

“Claire, we need somewhere private.”

“No.”

I did not recognize my own voice.

“You can tell me where my husband is right here.”

The brown paper bag crackled in my hand.

I had folded Marcus’s favorite napkin around a plastic fork, just as I had done when we were young and broke and sharing lunches outside his medical school library.

David looked past me at the nurses’ station.

One of the nurses turned away.

“He is alive,” David said quickly.

The relief was so violent my knees weakened.

“Then bring him here.”

“He’s upstairs.”

“In surgery?”

David made a sound that was not quite an answer.

“Claire, Marcus hasn’t performed an operation in four months.”

I stared at the man who had stood beside my husband at our wedding.

“That’s impossible.”

“He took medical leave.”

“He leaves our house before six every morning.”

“I know.”

“He comes home after midnight.”

“I know that too.”

Every quiet syllable felt like another door closing.

David led me toward an empty consultation room.

I refused to sit until he showed me a photograph on his phone.

Marcus stood in a hospital gown, his dark hair flattened against a pillow, an IV taped to his hand.

The photograph had been taken in June.

It was October now.

“What is this?”

David gripped the phone so tightly his knuckles whitened.

“Marcus has a serious neurological condition.”

My mouth went dry.

“How serious?”

“He needs to explain the medical details himself.”

I wanted to throw the lunch bag across the room.

Instead, I set it on the table with terrible care.

“You all let me think he was working.”

“We urged him to tell you.”

“And when he refused?”

David looked at the floor.

I understood the answer.

A knock sounded at the open door.

A nurse with a pale face whispered, “David, he’s asking for his wife.”

My heart rose toward my throat.

Then she added, “He says Claire must not go near Room 614.”
