Chapter 17 - WHAT MARCUS TOOK

The photograph was dated six weeks before I arrived with lunch.

Marcus had sworn he stopped investigating once his treatment began.

I brought the photograph to him and waited while he studied it.

He did not deny it.

“I went back for the notebook,” he said.

“The original?”

“Yes.”

“Did you find it?”

“I found enough.”

He explained that a former research assistant had told him about physical records kept in a locked cabinet.

He entered the office using access he still possessed and photographed several pages.

He had not taken the original notebook.

But he did remove one small item.

He opened a drawer beside his chair and showed me a sealed plastic evidence pouch.

Inside was a cracked silver star charm.

I recognized it immediately.

It belonged to Lily’s birthday bracelet.

“I found it on Kessler's desk,” Marcus said.

My lungs seemed to stop working.

“Why didn’t you give it to the police?”

“I was ashamed.”

“Of what?”

“That I knew she had been brought into this and still couldn't bring myself to tell you.”

His confession hurt worse than the legal documents because it was simple.

He had chosen silence again.

I stood.

“Give the pouch to Elena.”

“Claire.”

“No more private heroics.”

He bowed his head.

“You're right.”

Investigators documented the charm's custody and explored whether it could establish a connection to the unauthorized collection.

It was not proof by itself.

But the photographed notebook pages, access logs, and Rebecca's letters formed a more coherent record than the hospital had expected.

The board hearing began behind closed doors.

David gave his statement.

Rebecca spoke about the pressure placed on her family.

Marcus disclosed his condition and admitted his own failures.

I was the last family witness.

When asked what I wanted, I did not say revenge.

“I want everyone whose consent was taken for granted to be told the truth.”

Then an investigator approached Elena in the hallway.

A second set of forged forms had been discovered.

One authorized the destruction of the physical samples.

It carried my signature again.
