Chapter 11 - THE CONSENT FORM

The hospital claimed Lily's swab was part of a children's science demonstration.
The form bearing my signature claimed otherwise.
It authorized a hereditary screening panel with broad sample retention rights.
I knew the signature was forged before Elena pointed out the uneven lettering.
I signed my name with a long descending flourish.
The signature on the form ended in a blunt line.
Elena filed a complaint with the state health department and requested an investigation into the improper collection.
Marcus asked to go with us.
I said no.
He did not argue.
That frightened me almost as much as his old arrogance.
His treatment was exhausting him.
His hands trembled when he tried to button his cuffs.
I saw the illness clearly now that it no longer wore the disguise of overwork.
Still, compassion did not erase what he had chosen to hide.
Rebecca called me at noon.
“Daniel asked why Marcus stopped visiting.”
I resisted the urge to hang up.
“I'm sorry he's frightened.”
“Don't you understand what's at stake?”
“I understand a child deserves honest care and that mine deserves protection.”
Rebecca went quiet.
Then she whispered, “Kessler told me Claire would be compatible.”
I gripped the phone.
“What?”
“He said you might save Daniel.”
The room seemed to shrink.
“Did he tell you how he knew that?”
“No.”
“Did he tell you they took a sample from my daughter?”
Rebecca made a small choking sound.
“No.”
We agreed to meet in Elena’s office.
Rebecca arrived carrying copies of every letter she had received.
In a sealed envelope was a promise from Kessler's private foundation to pay Daniel's medical expenses if Rebecca remained cooperative.
A second letter instructed her not to communicate with the press or independent physicians.
At the bottom, beneath Kessler's signature, was another name.
Philip Voss.
Rebecca looked at me with the face of a woman who had just recognized her own fear in someone else.
“I thought they were helping him,” she said.
Then she placed one final document on Elena’s desk.

It listed Lily as a backup donor candidate.
