Chapter 9 - The Hostage Exchange That Wasn't

Dante answered Mercer's phone on the first ring.
Marco used Mercer's voice recorder to play a short prerecorded phrase from an earlier security briefing.
"I have her."
Dante did not question it.
"Condition?"
Marco typed the response instead of speaking.
ALIVE. HURT. CONSCIOUS.
A location arrived twenty seconds later.
Not Calumet.
A parking structure near McCormick Place.
Mia looked at the address.
"He changed the exchange site."
Sterling nodded.
"Because Mercer gave up Calumet."
Marco looked at the unconscious guard.
"Dante may know he failed."
Gabriel studied the message.
"Or Calumet was never real."
Mia shook her head.
"Paul believed it."
"That does not make it true."
Hannah stepped into the hallway.
"You are not taking Mia there."
Mia looked at her.
"I am going."
"You saved my son."
"Which is why I would prefer not to let the people who took him win."
Hannah's eyes filled.
"That is not a reason to get yourself killed."
Mia softened.
"No."
She looked at Gabriel.
"It is a reason to make sure we control the exchange."
Gabriel hated the plan.
That was different from believing it was wrong.
They built it around three lies.
The first lie was that Mia still had the master key.
She did, but Gabriel made a duplicate metal wafer using a high-resolution photograph and a portable engraver Sterling kept in his emergency kit.
The second lie was that Marco remained isolated and desperate.
In reality, he quietly activated six security officers whose families he had personally checked.
The third lie was that Gabriel would stay away.
Nobody in the room believed that one.
Mia changed into a clean gray sweater from the clinic donation closet.
The garment hid most of her bandages.
Gabriel watched her tighten the laces on her boots.
"You can still walk away."
"So can you."
"I am not the bait."
"You are always the bait."
He frowned.
"Explain."
"Every plan tonight assumes you will react like Gabriel Romano."
"And what does Gabriel Romano do?"
Mia looked at him.
"Protects family first, punishes betrayal second, and thinks about consequences sometime Thursday."
Marco made a sound that might have been a cough.
Gabriel stared at her.
"You have worked for me too long."
"Seven years, apparently by legal conspiracy."
For the first time since the vault, Gabriel laughed.
It lasted only a second.
Then he became serious.
"If Dante touches you-"
"You will ruin the plan."
"That was not what I was going to say."
"It was where the sentence was going."
Mia stepped closer.
"Listen to me."
Gabriel looked down at her.
"He needs the key."
"Yes."
"That means I am more valuable alive than dead."
"Until he has it."
"Then make sure he never has it."
Gabriel's gaze dropped briefly to her boot.
"The real one stays with me."
Mia shook her head.
"No."
"Mia."
"If Dante searches me and finds nothing, the exchange ends."
"Give him the fake."
"If he tests it?"
Gabriel's jaw tightened.
She was right again.
Mia removed the real wafer and placed it inside a narrow medical tape packet beneath the bandage at her ribs.
The fake went into her boot.
"If I have to surrender something, he gets the fake."
Gabriel looked at her wound.
"And the real one?"
"You do not want to know."
"I absolutely do."
"Then you will make a face."
He made one anyway.
At 2:17 a.m., Marco drove Mia into the parking structure.
His hands were visible on the steering wheel.
Mia sat in the back with a loose plastic restraint around her wrists.
The garage was almost empty.
Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead.
A black sedan waited on level four.
Dante Romano leaned against the hood.
Mia had seen him in hallways many times.
He always looked as if he had just left a magazine photograph.
Tonight his suit was immaculate despite the rain.
His smile was not.
"Marco."
Marco stopped ten feet away.
"Where is Emma?"
Dante looked at Mia.
"Where is the key?"
"Girl first."
Dante smiled.
"That is adorable."
Marco's face hardened.
Dante opened the rear door of his sedan.
A video played on a tablet lying on the seat.
Emma Mercer sat in a chair inside a warehouse office.
She was sixteen.
Her hands were tied, but she appeared unhurt.
Marco looked carefully at the background.
Mia did too.
A red fire map hung on the wall.
Beside it was a window showing stacked blue shipping containers.
Calumet.
Paul had told the truth.
Dante closed the door.
"Satisfied?"
"No," Marco said.
"Good."
Dante pointed at Mia.
"Bring her."
Marco pulled Mia from the car.
She stumbled deliberately.
Dante's eyes moved to the bandage visible beneath her sweater.
"You look terrible."
Mia met his gaze.
"You look expensive."
Dante laughed.
"I always liked payroll week."
Mia's stomach turned.
"Did you know your father arranged my job?"
Dante's smile faltered.
Only slightly.
"So Adrian finally told you."
Mia filed that away.
"He told me enough."
"Adrian always does."
Dante stepped closer.
"Where is the key?"
"What key?"
He slapped her.
The sound cracked through the garage.
Marco moved.
Mia shouted, "No."
Marco stopped.
Dante smiled toward him.
"Good dog."
Mia tasted blood.
She looked at Dante.
"Your father hits harder."
His smile disappeared.
"You never met my father."
"Not properly."
"Then do not pretend you understand him."
Mia tilted her head.
"There it is."
"What?"
"The part where you defend a man who treats you like an employee."
Dante's eyes changed.
Marco almost admired her commitment to bad timing.
Dante grabbed her jaw.
"You know nothing about my family."
"I know your father trusted strangers to kidnap a baby instead of trusting you."
Dante tightened his grip.
"Where is the key?"
"Boot."
He shoved her against the car and pulled the fake wafer free.
Dante stared at it.
Mia watched his face.
He knew what it should look like.
That mattered.
"How do I know this is real?"
"You do not."
Dante smiled.
"Then you are coming with me."
Marco stepped forward.
"Emma."
"When I confirm the key."
"That was not the deal."
"I changed it."
Marco's voice became dangerous.
"You learned that from your father."
Dante looked at him.
"My father built the company your salary comes from."
"Gabriel signs my salary."
"Not anymore."
Dante smiled.
"By sunrise, Gabriel is finished."
Mia looked at him.
"Because of the medical declaration?"
Dante's smile widened.
"Because of murder evidence."
Gabriel, listening through a transmitter sewn into Mia's sweater, went still in a van two levels below.
Sterling looked at him.
"There it is."
Dante continued upstairs.
"Every network in Chicago gets Daniel's file at five."
Mia kept him talking.
"A forged file."
"Real transfer."
"Forged authorization."
"Good luck proving that before the federal agents arrive."
Marco's eyes narrowed.
"You invited federal attention to your own company?"
Dante shrugged.
"Some things have to burn before they can be rebuilt."
Mia heard Gabriel's breath through the tiny receiver in her ear.
She knew that sentence had angered him.
"Your father wants Gabriel arrested."
Dante smiled.
"My father wants Gabriel humiliated."
"Why?"
For the first time, Dante's expression showed something personal.
"Because Gabriel was handed everything."
Mia stared at him.
"Daniel is dead, Leo was kidnapped, Hannah is hunted, and Gabriel has spent six hours wondering which family member murdered his brother."
She tilted her head.
"Which part looks handed to him?"
Dante slapped her again.
This time Gabriel moved downstairs.
Sterling grabbed his arm.
"Not yet."
Gabriel looked at him with murder in his eyes.
"Take your hand off me."
Sterling did.
"But she is making him talk."
Gabriel forced himself to remain still.
Upstairs, Dante dragged Mia toward the sedan.
Marco blocked him.
"Emma first."
Dante raised his weapon.
"Move."
Marco did not.
Dante's phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
"What do you mean it does not match?"
Mia's heart accelerated.
The fake had failed.
Dante looked at her.
"Where is the real key?"
Mia smiled through the blood on her lip.
"Accounting error."
Dante struck her hard enough to send her against the car.
Gabriel started moving.
This time nobody stopped him.
Dante pressed the weapon toward Mia.
"Where is it?"
Mia's eyes shifted past him.
"Behind you."
Dante laughed.
"Please."
Gabriel's voice came from the darkness.
"She is not lying."
Dante turned.
Gabriel stood twenty feet away.
Marco moved at the same instant.
He knocked Dante's gun aside.
A shot hit the concrete ceiling.
Sterling's men blocked the ramps.
Dante hit Marco with the weapon and ran toward the stairwell.
Gabriel caught him at the door.
The two cousins crashed into the wall.
Dante swung first.
Gabriel hit harder.
Mia shouted, "We need him conscious."
Gabriel stopped with his fist drawn back.
Dante laughed through blood.
"She controls you already."
Gabriel looked at him.
"No."
He lowered his fist.
"She reminds me when you are more useful alive."
Marco cuffed Dante.
Mia leaned against the sedan, breathing hard.
Gabriel crossed to her.
"Are you okay?"
"No."
He blinked.
"Good answer."
"I am learning."
Marco took Dante's phone.
"We have Calumet."
Dante smiled.
"Too late."
Marco froze.
"What did you do?"
"Nothing."
Dante looked at Mia.
"But my father knows the exchange failed."
Marco's phone buzzed.
A message appeared from Paul Mercer's number.
One photograph.
The warehouse chair was empty.
Emma was gone.
Below the image was a sentence.
