Chapter 16 - The Dark Floor

Darkness erased the corridor.
Mia heard Gabriel move before she saw anything.
A body struck concrete.
Vittorio fired once.
The muzzle flash lit his face for less than a second.
Gabriel hit the floor beside Mia.
"Stay down."
"Already doing that."
Another shot hit the electrical cabinet above them.
Sparks fell across the corridor.
Adrian groaned behind the server console.
Dante shouted from somewhere near the stairs.
"Emergency lights are on a thirty-second delay."
Mia counted silently.
The smell of gas became stronger.
"We do not have thirty seconds."
Gabriel reached for her hand in the darkness.
She took it without thinking.
His grip was warm and steady.
"Can you still access the logs?"
"Laptop battery."
Mia pulled the machine against her chest.
The screen glowed beneath her coat.
The copied archive was complete.
Crown remained frozen.
For the first time that morning, one thing had actually worked.
Vittorio's voice came from the darkness.
"You should have left this alone, Mia."
Gabriel's hand tightened around hers.
Mia answered before he could.
"You should have reconciled your accounts."
Vittorio laughed.
"Elias said something almost identical."
Mia went still.
Gabriel whispered, "Do not let him pull you out."
"He already did."
She raised her voice.
"Were you there when my father died?"
Silence.
Vittorio's answer came softly.
"No."
"Did you order it?"
"Yes."
The simplicity of the answer hurt more than denial.
Mia stopped breathing.
Gabriel shifted toward her.
She squeezed his hand once.
Not comfort.
A warning not to move.
"Why?" she asked.
"Because your father believed truth had value by itself."
Vittorio's voice moved farther down the corridor.
He was retreating.
Mia kept him talking.
"And Daniel?"
"Same weakness."
Gabriel's body became rigid beside her.
"He believed numbers made him brave."
Vittorio laughed again.
"They made him predictable."
Gabriel started to rise.
Mia pulled him back.
"Not yet."
"He is leaving."
"He wants you angry."
"I am angry."
"I noticed."
The emergency lights came on.
Red light flooded the corridor.
Vittorio was already near the far security door.
Gabriel raised his weapon.
Dante stepped into the line between them.
"Dad."
Vittorio stopped.
For one second, father and son stared at each other.
Dante looked younger than thirty-three.
"Why did you use my office?"
Vittorio's face showed impatience, not guilt.
"Move."
"You cloned Gabriel's token from my terminal."
"I said move."
"You made it look like I helped."
Vittorio smiled faintly.
"You did help."
Dante flinched.
"Not with Daniel."
"Details."
The single word broke something in Dante.
He shook his head.
"Emma was sixteen."
"A temporary inconvenience."
"She was terrified."
"And alive."
Dante stared at his father.
"You would have let her drown."
Vittorio raised the weapon.
"I would have done what was required."
Dante did not move.
"For what?"
His voice cracked.
"Money?"
Vittorio's expression became almost offended.
"Control."
He looked toward Gabriel.
"Money follows control."
The gas alarm finally began to scream.
A mechanical announcement ordered immediate evacuation.
Vittorio glanced toward the security door.
Dante saw the distraction and lunged.
The gun fired.
Dante collapsed.
Gabriel fired once toward Vittorio's hand.
The weapon flew against the wall.
Vittorio disappeared through the security door before Gabriel could reach him.
Mia crawled toward Dante.
Blood spread across his upper arm.
"Not chest," she said.
Dante laughed weakly.
"Best news all night."
Adrian sat against the server cabinet holding his shoulder.
"I would like to compete for that title."
Gabriel reached the locked security door.
He hit the release.
Nothing happened.
Dante looked at him from the floor.
"Private elevator."
"Where does it go?"
"Parking level three."
Gabriel turned toward the stairwell.
Mia called his name.
He stopped.
"If you chase him, we lose the people still inside."
Gabriel stared at the door.
Every instinct in him wanted Vittorio.
Every lesson of the night pointed somewhere else.
He turned back.
"We evacuate."
Dante looked surprised.
Mia was not.
Gabriel lifted Adrian's uninjured arm over his shoulder.
Mia helped Dante stand.
They moved toward the service stairs.
Two floors above, employees were already pouring toward emergency exits.
Federal tactical teams entered from the lobby and loading dock.
Firefighters reached the mechanical floor.
The gas line was shut at 5:44 a.m.
Eleven minutes before Vittorio's original schedule.
The thermite charges inside the data vault had not ignited.
Dante had given investigators the correct control codes.
That decision saved the server racks.
It also saved more than a hundred people from being trapped above a burning basement.
At 5:49, Gabriel emerged into the loading dock carrying Adrian's weight.
Mia walked beside Dante.
Special Agent Lena Ortiz met them with six armed agents.
Her eyes went first to the injured men.
Then to Gabriel.
"Hands where I can see them."
Gabriel stopped.
Mia did too.
Dante stared.
"We just stopped the building from burning."
Ortiz's expression did not change.
"Medical teams will take you."
She looked at Gabriel.
"Gabriel Romano, you are being detained pursuant to a federal warrant."
Mia stepped forward.
"The warrant is based on fabricated evidence."
Ortiz looked at her.
"Mia Carver, so is yours."
Gabriel moved slightly in front of Mia.
She touched his arm.
"Do not."
He looked at her.
"They will separate us."
"Probably."
"The logs."
Mia held up the laptop.
"Here."
Ortiz signaled an evidence technician.
Mia did not release it immediately.
"This contains the immutable access archive proving Gabriel's approval token was cloned."
"We will preserve it."
"And the Crown hold."
"Ms. Carver."
"Four hundred eighteen million dollars belonging to Leo Romano is frozen because of the key inside this bag."
Ortiz's eyes sharpened.
"What key?"
Mia looked at Adrian.
He removed his brass wafer.
Mia removed Elias's wafer from beneath her bandage.
Together they formed the Romano crest.
Ortiz called for a second evidence technician.
"Separate bags."
Mia shook her head.
"No."
Ortiz frowned.
"Excuse me?"
"Separate people, not keys."
"Why?"
"Because one without the other cannot execute an emergency hold."
"That sounds safer separated."
"Unless someone replaces one."
Ortiz studied Mia for a second.
"You believe my evidence team is compromised?"
Mia looked at the headlines on every phone around them.
"I believe someone compromised almost every system we trusted tonight."
Ortiz did not argue.
She placed both keys into one sealed transparent case and signed across the tape herself.
"Satisfied?"
"Not remotely."
Ortiz almost smiled.
"You may survive this profession."
"I have no intention of joining it."
Gabriel was placed in one federal vehicle.
Mia was placed in another.
As the doors closed, their eyes met across the loading dock.
Neither spoke.
They did not need to.
At 6:02 a.m., Crown attempted the scheduled transfer.
The emergency hold rejected it.
At 6:04, every Crown administrator account was locked.
At 6:07, Vittorio Romano disappeared from his last known vehicle beneath Lower Wacker Drive.
At 6:15, federal agents began imaging the Romano data vault.
At 6:22, Ortiz opened the first preserved access log.
It showed a cloned Gabriel credential created from Dante's security terminal seventeen months earlier.
At 6:29, a second log tied that clone to Vittorio's executive account.
At 6:31, Ortiz ordered the warrants against Gabriel and Mia reviewed.
At 6:37, an evidence technician carried Daniel's black ledger from the loading dock into a secured federal van.
At 6:42, the van arrived at the evidence facility.
The seal was intact.
The bag number matched.
The signatures matched.
Ortiz opened the bag herself.
Inside was a black ledger.
She turned the first page.
Blank.
The second page was blank too.
Every page was empty.
May you like
Daniel's ledger had been replaced.
