Chapter 19 - Sunday Dinner

Gabriel entered the mansion through the front door at 9:42 a.m.

Adrian walked beside him.

Both men carried empty hands.

The fake Crown keys rested inside Adrian's coat.

Federal tactical teams waited beyond the perimeter.

Mia sat in the command vehicle with Ortiz listening through Daniel's hidden audio receiver.

Hannah remained at Saint Agnes with Leo.

She had refused to turn off the secure feed.

"I want to hear him admit it," she said.

Gabriel walked through the foyer where he and Daniel had once raced toy cars across marble floors.

The house smelled the same.

Waxed wood.

Old stone.

Dust from rooms kept closed too long.

Memory made the place feel occupied by ghosts.

The dining room doors stood open.

Vittorio sat at Salvatore Romano's old chair.

Daniel's black ledger rested on the table in front of him.

Marco sat to the left with his hands bound behind the chair.

Dante sat on the right, pale from blood loss but conscious.

A man Gabriel did not recognize stood behind them holding a weapon.

Vittorio looked at Gabriel.

"You came."

"You knew I would."

"Yes."

His eyes moved to Adrian.

"And the hidden son finally enters through the front door."

Adrian's expression remained tired.

"You always did enjoy theater."

"Salvatore enjoyed secrets."

Vittorio touched the ledger.

"I simply learned to charge admission."

Gabriel stopped at the far end of the table.

"Release Marco and Dante."

"Keys first."

Adrian removed the two fake wafers.

Vittorio looked at them.

"Bring them."

Gabriel started forward.

Vittorio shook his head.

"Adrian."

Adrian walked slowly toward him.

Mia listened from outside.

Every step sounded through the old microphone beneath the table.

Vittorio took the keys.

He aligned them.

The Romano crest appeared perfectly.

He smiled.

"Elias was clever."

Mia's hands tightened.

Ortiz looked at her.

"Keep listening."

Inside, Adrian said, "He was better than you."

Vittorio laughed.

"He was dead by fifty."

Mia closed her eyes.

Hannah made a small sound over the secure feed.

Ortiz leaned toward the microphone.

"That is admission-adjacent."

Mia shook her head.

"We need direct."

Gabriel apparently understood the same thing.

"You ordered Elias killed."

Vittorio looked at him.

"Mia told you."

"You told Mia in the basement."

"Then why ask?"

"Because I want to hear you say it when the lights are on."

Vittorio smiled.

"Fine."

He leaned back in Salvatore's chair.

"I ordered Elias Carver killed."

Mia stopped breathing.

Ortiz's recording technician raised a thumb.

Clean capture.

Gabriel's voice remained steady.

"And Daniel?"

Vittorio looked at the ledger.

"Daniel should have listened to me."

"Did you order his death?"

"I ordered the truck."

Hannah began crying silently on the secure line.

Gabriel closed his eyes for half a second.

Then he opened them.

"Why?"

Vittorio's face hardened.

"Because he was going to dismantle everything."

"What?"

"The family."

"Daniel wanted out."

"Daniel wanted all of us out."

Vittorio struck the table with one hand.

"He wanted to sell the private terminals, disclose the shadow accounts, close the enforcement crews, and convert North Lake into some employee-owned shipping trust."

Gabriel stared.

"He never told me."

"Because he was afraid you would stop him."

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

Vittorio looked at him.

"You were there."

"He was afraid Gabriel would join him and become a target too."

Gabriel looked at Adrian.

Adrian's eyes filled with regret.

"Daniel thought he could finish it quietly."

Vittorio smiled.

"Daniel thought many stupid things."

Gabriel's fists tightened.

Marco spoke from his chair.

"He also thought you were stealing."

Vittorio looked at him.

"That part was correct."

Mia stared at the audio display.

Ortiz whispered, "Keep him going."

Inside, Gabriel walked closer.

"You killed my brother to protect stolen money."

"No."

Vittorio's voice sharpened.

"I killed your brother to protect power."

He looked around the dining room.

"Money can be replaced."

"Fear cannot."

Gabriel shook his head.

"You think people feared you?"

"They obeyed me."

"Because you threatened their children."

Vittorio smiled.

"And it worked."

Dante looked at his father.

"Not anymore."

Vittorio's eyes moved to him.

"You are still here because of me."

"I am here tied to a chair because of you."

"Same difference."

Something in Dante's face finally emptied.

The desperate son disappeared.

What remained was a man looking at his father without hope.

"You never loved me."

Vittorio sighed.

"Love is what weak men call obligation when they want applause."

Dante laughed once.

"That sounds lonely."

Vittorio's face changed.

For the first time, Dante had hurt him.

Mia heard it in the silence.

Gabriel did too.

"Why Leo?"

Vittorio looked toward him.

"Because Daniel was careless enough to create a son before dying."

Gabriel took one step forward.

The armed guard raised his weapon.

Vittorio held up a hand.

"Let him hear it."

He looked at Gabriel.

"Leo inherited Daniel's voting block."

"I know."

"Hannah controlled it."

"I know."

"And you were successor trustee."

Vittorio smiled.

"So the clean company could not be absorbed into Crown unless Hannah signed or you disappeared."

"You kidnapped a six-month-old child to force a signature."

"I created an emergency."

Hannah made a broken sound over the feed.

Mia gripped the edge of the table.

Vittorio continued.

"I expected Hannah to sign guardianship documents while sedated and frightened."

"She refused."

"Women often become inconvenient when men underestimate grief."

Mia almost laughed at the irony.

Gabriel looked at the ledger.

"And Mia?"

Vittorio's expression turned colder.

"An accident."

Mia leaned closer to the speaker.

"He is lying," she whispered.

Ortiz looked at her.

"How do you know?"

"He planted a phone on my coat before the convoy attack."

Inside, Gabriel asked the same thing.

"You had a tracker placed on Mia before the ambush."

Vittorio smiled.

"Dante's people did."

Dante looked up sharply.

"You told me it was for audit surveillance."

"It was."

"You knew she found Daniel's files."

"Yes."

Mia closed her eyes.

Direct admission.

Vittorio continued.

"Leo was leverage."

"Mia was the real target."

Gabriel's voice became dangerously quiet.

"Yes."

The title secret of the night finally became clear.

Mia had not accidentally become entangled in Leo's kidnapping.

Leo had been used to control the woman who possessed the evidence capable of destroying Crown.

Gabriel looked at Vittorio.

"You put a baby in that van because Mia found your books."

"I put insurance in the van."

Gabriel crossed half the distance before Adrian caught his arm.

"Not yet."

The same words Mia had used all night.

Gabriel stopped.

Vittorio smiled.

"She trained you quickly."

Gabriel looked at him.

"She reminded me of something Daniel understood before I did."

"What?"

"Destroying you is less important than proving what you are."

Vittorio's smile disappeared.

He looked beneath the table.

Then toward the wine cabinet.

Suspicion entered his face.

"Sunday table," he whispered.

Mia went cold.

"He knows."

Ortiz raised her hand.

Tactical teams moved toward the mansion.

Inside, Vittorio lunged for the wine cabinet.

Adrian blocked him.

The armed guard raised his weapon toward Adrian.

Dante kicked backward with both feet.

His chair crashed into the guard's knees.

The shot went into the ceiling.

Marco threw his body sideways.

His chair struck the guard too.

Gabriel grabbed Vittorio before he reached the cabinet.

The two men crashed onto the dining table.

Daniel's ledger slid across the polished wood.

Pages scattered open.

Vittorio struck Gabriel in the face.

Gabriel hit him back.

Years of family dinners, funerals, business meetings, and false loyalty disappeared into the fight.

Vittorio reached beneath his jacket.

Mia heard metal scrape through the microphone.

"Gun."

Ortiz shouted into the tactical radio.

Gabriel caught Vittorio's wrist.

The weapon pointed across the room.

Adrian moved toward them.

Vittorio fired.

The bullet struck the wall.

Federal agents breached the front entrance.

Vittorio twisted free and aimed toward Gabriel again.

Dante, still tied to the chair, threw himself sideways into his father's legs.

Vittorio fell.

Gabriel kicked the weapon away.

Marco rolled his chair onto the guard's hand until he released his gun.

Agents flooded the room.

"Hands."

"Do not move."

"Weapon down."

Vittorio lay on the floor with Gabriel standing over him.

For one terrible second, Gabriel had a clear path to revenge.

No one in the family would have blamed him for taking it.

Daniel was dead.

Elias was dead.

Leo had been taken.

Mia had been beaten.

Hannah had been manipulated.

Marco's people had been threatened.

Dante had been used and shot.

Gabriel looked at Vittorio.

Then he stepped back.

Ortiz cuffed Vittorio herself.

Vittorio stared up at Gabriel.

"Your father would be ashamed."

Gabriel's face became calm.

"My father is not the standard anymore."

Agents lifted Vittorio to his feet.

Mia entered the dining room only after Ortiz cleared it.

Gabriel saw her at the doorway.

For a moment, the noise around them disappeared.

Mia looked at the cuffs on Vittorio.

Then at Daniel's ledger on the table.

Then at Gabriel.

"You did not kill him."

"No."

"Good."

"You sound surprised."

"I work in risk assessment."

He laughed.

Hannah's voice came through Mia's phone.

"Is it over?"

Gabriel looked at Vittorio being escorted from the house.

He wanted to say yes.

Mia looked at Daniel's open ledger.

One page near the back had been folded beneath the binding.

A line of handwriting was visible.

Mia's expression changed.

Gabriel noticed.

"What?"

She unfolded the page.

Daniel had written one sentence across the bottom.

VITTORIO DID NOT KNOW WHO PAID KESSLER AFTER ELIAS DIED.

Mia went still.

Gabriel looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

Mia stared at the name of the man Adrian said had cut her father's brake line.

Raymond Kessler.

Vittorio had ordered Elias killed.

But according to Daniel, someone else had paid the killer afterward.

Someone Vittorio did not know.

Mia looked toward the doorway where Vittorio disappeared in federal custody.

May you like

"It means he was not the end of this."
