Chapter 14 - The Phone Daniel Never Erased

The storage facility sat in a row of anonymous warehouses near O'Hare.

Gabriel could not approach it openly.

Neither could Mia.

Both were now the subjects of federal alerts.

Sterling volunteered.

Gabriel refused.

Adrian volunteered.

Mia refused.

In the end, the person who went inside was Hannah.

Gabriel hated the decision.

Hannah hated his objection more.

"It is my storage unit."

"Someone already breached it."

"Which means they expect you, not me."

"You are Leo's mother."

"I was Leo's mother yesterday too, and everyone treated me like a sedated witness while men decided what happened to my child."

Gabriel went quiet.

Hannah looked at him through the video link from Saint Agnes.

"I am done being managed."

Mia watched Gabriel struggle with the answer.

Finally he nodded.

"Marco goes with you."

"Agreed."

"Two cars."

"Fine."

"No electronic route."

"Gabriel."

"I am learning compromise."

Hannah stared at him.

"Slowly."

Marco collected her forty minutes later.

Leo remained at Saint Agnes under the protection of four nuns, two trusted guards, and Sister Beatrice, a seventy-year-old woman who told Gabriel she had once broken a man's nose with a hymnal.

Gabriel decided the convent was secure.

He, Mia, Adrian, and Sterling relocated to an unfinished office floor owned by a shell company Sterling swore Vittorio did not know.

Mia sat at a folding table with Daniel's ledger, the Crown master key, and a laptop stripped of wireless hardware.

She opened the transaction cache copied from Pier 19.

"Look at this."

Gabriel moved beside her.

A series of transfers had been scheduled for 6:00 a.m.

North Lake Custodial Holdings to Crown Reserve.

Total value: $418,600,000.

Gabriel stared.

"He is stealing Leo's trust."

"Trying to."

"How?"

Mia opened the authorization details.

Three approvals were attached.

Vittorio Romano.

Adrian Vale.

Hannah Romano.

Adrian stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

"I never approved this."

Mia looked at him.

"Your digital signature says you did."

"It was cloned."

Gabriel looked at the third name.

"Hannah did not sign."

"Same method."

Mia opened the certificate data.

"Her signature token was issued yesterday."

Gabriel's face hardened.

"She does not have one."

"She does now."

Adrian looked at Mia.

"Hospital guardianship papers."

"Exactly."

Vittorio had not needed Hannah to sign the papers.

He needed her signature sample and identity documents inside the folder.

The fake guardianship confrontation had been a credential-harvesting attempt.

Mia felt sick.

"He planned this before Leo was taken."

Gabriel nodded.

"The kidnapping created the emergency."

"And the emergency justified moving the trust."

Sterling stood by the window.

"Four hundred million is enough motive for most men."

Mia shook her head.

"Not Vittorio."

Gabriel looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because he already controlled Crown."

"So?"

"He could have stolen money slowly for years."

Mia pointed at the scheduled transfer.

"This is not theft."

"Then what is it?"

"Consolidation."

Adrian understood first.

"He is moving every legitimate asset into the hidden structure."

"Which means after six o'clock, Romano Holdings becomes hollow."

Gabriel stared at the numbers.

"And whoever controls Crown owns the real company."

Mia nodded.

Sterling looked at Adrian.

"Including your reserve beneficiary rights."

Adrian's face tightened.

"He can erase them after transfer."

Mia looked at the master key.

"Not if we block the transfer."

Gabriel leaned closer.

"Can you?"

"The key gives audit access, not approval authority."

"Can you freeze it?"

"Maybe if the original trust rules still recognize Elias's emergency control."

"How do we test that?"

Mia inserted the metal wafer into an offline reader Sterling had acquired from a retired banker.

A legacy menu appeared.

EMERGENCY AUDIT HOLD.

She stared.

"My father built a kill switch."

Gabriel almost smiled.

"I like him."

Mia looked at him.

"You never met him."

"Still."

She selected the command.

A prompt appeared.

SECOND KEY REQUIRED.

Everyone's hope disappeared.

"What second key?" Sterling asked.

Mia looked at Elias's letter.

No second key was mentioned.

Adrian's face changed.

Gabriel noticed.

"You know."

Adrian did not answer.

"Adrian."

He reached beneath his shirt and removed a thin chain.

A small brass wafer hung from it.

Mia stared.

"You had it the whole time."

"My father gave it to my mother."

Gabriel laughed bitterly.

"Of course he did."

Adrian placed the wafer beside Elias's.

The two pieces aligned perfectly.

Together they formed the Romano crest.

Mia inserted both.

The system accepted them.

EMERGENCY HOLD AVAILABLE.

She clicked.

A final warning appeared.

HOLD WILL NOT EXECUTE WITHOUT LIVE CROWN SERVER CONFIRMATION.

Gabriel looked at her.

"Meaning headquarters."

"Meaning the data vault."

They had returned to the same problem.

The immutable security logs and the trust freeze both required access beneath Romano Holdings headquarters.

Gabriel checked the time.

4:58 a.m.

One hour and two minutes remained.

Hannah called.

"We are at the storage facility."

Gabriel put her on speaker.

"Status?"

Marco answered.

"Lock was cut clean."

"Anyone inside?"

"Not now."

Hannah moved between boxes Daniel had packed after they married.

"The phone should be in a blue plastic bin marked COLLEGE."

Marco found it.

The bin had been opened.

Clothes were scattered across the floor.

Hannah dropped to her knees.

"It is gone."

Mia closed her eyes.

Then Marco said, "Wait."

He reached beneath a stack of old notebooks.

A charger remained.

No phone.

But inside the notebook cover was a small memory card taped flat.

Hannah stared.

"Daniel."

Mia almost smiled.

"He learned redundancy from somebody."

Gabriel looked at her.

"Maybe your father."

Marco brought the card to a clean reader in his vehicle.

It contained a backup of Daniel's phone from three days before his death.

Mia searched the mail database remotely through a direct cable connection Marco had prepared.

The forged email did not exist.

More importantly, the message ID used in the leaked copy belonged to a completely different email Daniel had received from Adrian.

"We can prove fabrication," Mia said.

Adrian leaned over her shoulder.

"If a judge sees the raw database."

"We need chain of custody."

Gabriel looked at Marco on the screen.

"Bring the card to federal agents."

Marco frowned.

"Now?"

"Now."

Mia looked at Gabriel.

"That exposes Hannah's location."

"Not if Marco goes alone."

Hannah spoke.

"Do it."

Gabriel hesitated.

She repeated it.

"Do it."

Marco left the storage facility with the memory card.

Hannah remained inside with two guards.

Ten minutes later, a federal tactical team arrived.

Not for Marco.

For Hannah.

Gabriel watched through the facility's camera feed.

Agents surrounded the building.

A loudspeaker ordered Hannah to exit.

"How did they know?" Mia whispered.

Adrian looked at the leaked warrant documents.

"Vittorio flagged Hannah as a material witness being unlawfully concealed by Gabriel."

Hannah called.

"What do I do?"

Gabriel's instinct was immediate.

Run.

Hide.

Protect.

Then he remembered Mia's words.

You cannot put everyone behind your back.

"Walk out," he said.

Hannah went silent.

"Are you sure?"

"Take Daniel's backup card copy if Marco left one."

"He did."

"Give it to the first federal supervisor you see."

"And if they arrest me?"

Gabriel's voice softened.

"Then tell the truth louder than Vittorio lies."

Hannah took Leo's empty carrier as proof of the kidnapping and walked outside with her hands visible.

She was not arrested.

She was escorted into a federal vehicle for questioning.

Within minutes, every news network had footage of Daniel Romano's widow entering federal custody.

Vittorio's strategy had created a problem he did not expect.

Hannah refused private transport.

She stopped before the cameras.

A reporter shouted, "Mrs. Romano, do you believe Gabriel killed your husband?"

Hannah looked directly into the camera.

"No."

Another reporter shouted, "Why not?"

Hannah held up Daniel's backup card inside an evidence bag.

"Because my husband left proof that someone framed him."

Gabriel watched the broadcast in silence.

Mia looked at him.

"She is very good at not being managed."

Gabriel almost smiled.

Then the office elevator chimed.

Nobody had called it.

Sterling raised his weapon.

Adrian moved away from the glass wall.

The doors opened.

Dante Romano stood inside.

His handcuffs were gone.

Blood covered one sleeve.

Gabriel stared at him.

"How did you get out?"

Dante stepped into the room.

"Marco's man made the mistake of believing I wanted to escape."

Mia's hand moved toward the Crown keys.

Dante looked directly at them.

May you like

"I came back because my father is going to kill everyone in headquarters at six."
