Chapter 4 - The Widow Who Refused to Sign

Gabriel said nothing for three seconds.
Hannah seemed to understand the silence.
"You heard me."
"Do not sign anything."
"I already told him no."
"Is he alone?"
"Two men are outside the room."
Marco moved closer.
Gabriel put the call on speaker.
"Do you recognize them?"
"No."
"Hospital security?"
"They are wearing badges."
Mia pushed herself higher against the pillow.
"Ask her what color the stripe is on the badges."
Gabriel looked at her.
"Why?"
"Temporary contractors use red."
Gabriel repeated the question.
Hannah answered immediately.
"Blue."
Marco swore.
"Hospital executive protection uses blue."
Price shook his head.
"Not on this campus."
Gabriel's voice hardened.
"Hannah, listen to me."
"I am listening."
"Do you still have the necklace Daniel gave you?"
There was a pause.
"The silver cross?"
"Yes."
"I am wearing it."
"Take it off."
"Why?"
"Inside the clasp is a panic pin."
Hannah went silent.
Mia looked at Gabriel.
He did not look back.
"Daniel never told me."
"He never told anyone except me."
Hannah's breathing changed as she handled the necklace.
"I see it."
"Press it once."
"What happens?"
"Marco's people come through every door that matters."
Marco was already moving.
"I will call the west team."
Gabriel caught his sleeve.
"Not through network dispatch."
Marco understood.
"Manual call tree."
"Only men you would trust with your own child."
Marco left the room.
Hannah whispered through the phone.
"Vittorio is coming back."
"Put the phone under the blanket."
"Gabriel."
"Do it."
Fabric rustled.
A door opened on the other end.
Vittorio's voice filled the speaker.
It was warm, patient, and heartbreakingly familiar.
"Hannah, I know you are frightened."
Gabriel's jaw flexed.
Hannah answered with believable exhaustion.
"My baby is missing."
"Leo will come home."
"Then why do I need guardianship papers?"
Vittorio sighed.
"Because Gabriel is making decisions emotionally."
Mia watched Gabriel's face.
He did not react.
Vittorio continued.
"If something happens to him tonight, the family needs a clear legal structure around Leo's assets."
Hannah's voice sharpened.
"My son's assets?"
"Daniel created trusts."
"I know about the college trust."
"There are others."
Mia looked at Gabriel.
Gabriel frowned.
He had not known that.
"How much?" Hannah asked.
Vittorio hesitated.
"Enough that we should not discuss it over hospital walls."
"Then we should not discuss it at all."
A chair scraped.
Vittorio's tone cooled by one degree.
"You are tired."
"I am not stupid."
Mia almost smiled.
Gabriel did not, but pride flashed in his eyes.
Vittorio tried again.
"Daniel asked me to protect you if anything happened to him."
Hannah laughed once without humor.
"Daniel asked Gabriel to protect me."
Silence followed.
Vittorio's voice lost its warmth.
"Gabriel is not always safe to stand beside."
Hannah answered immediately.
"Neither are you."
The line filled with a faint electronic chirp.
Marco returned and pointed to his watch.
Two minutes.
Gabriel nodded.
Vittorio spoke again.
"Sign the papers, Hannah."
"No."
"This is not the moment to be difficult."
"My husband died."
Her voice cracked, then steadied.
"My son vanished tonight."
"And you walked into my room with a lawyer's folder before anyone had even told me Leo was alive."
Mia's eyes widened.
Gabriel looked at her.
They had both heard it.
Vittorio knew Leo was alive.
Nobody had told him.
Marco wrote two words on a notepad.
HE KNOWS.
Gabriel's face became unreadable.
On the phone, Vittorio realized his mistake.
"Marco called me."
Hannah answered softly.
"Marco called you after you arrived."
The room on the other end went silent.
Then came the sound of a chair moving quickly.
Hannah gasped.
Gabriel stepped toward the phone as if distance could be crossed by force.
"Hannah."
Vittorio's voice was no longer gentle.
"Who are you talking to?"
Fabric ripped.
The phone hit something hard.
Hannah shouted.
Then three sharp impacts sounded from the hallway.
Someone yelled, "Romano security."
Marco closed his eyes in relief.
A struggle followed.
Glass broke.
A man cursed.
Then Hannah's voice returned, breathless.
"Gabriel?"
"I am here."
"Your people are here."
"Is Vittorio?"
Hannah looked around.
"No."
Gabriel went still.
"What do you mean no?"
"He is gone."
Marco grabbed another phone.
"West stairwell."
Hannah interrupted.
"Wait."
Paper rustled.
"He left the folder."
Mia said, "Do not touch it with bare hands."
Hannah almost laughed despite the fear.
"Who is that?"
"Mia Carver."
A pause.
"The accountant who saved my son?"
Mia looked uncomfortable.
"Yes."
Hannah's voice softened.
"Thank you."
Mia looked away.
"Keep the papers where they are."
"I will."
Gabriel said, "Hannah, I need you moved."
"Not without Leo."
"You will have him soon."
"No."
Gabriel's mouth tightened.
Hannah continued.
"You have spent eighteen months deciding what is safest for me because Daniel died."
"This is different."
"It is always different with you."
Her voice became firm.
"Bring me my son, and then you can explain why your uncle knew he was alive before I did."
The call ended.
Gabriel stared at the phone.
Mia looked at him.
"She is right."
"I did not ask."
"You did not have to."
Price began preparing a bag of blood from the emergency refrigerator.
Gabriel walked to the far wall.
His hand rested against the concrete.
"Daniel created trusts I did not know about."
Mia thought of the encrypted files.
"Maybe the second file explains them."
"Can you open it?"
"Not without the key."
"Where is the key?"
"I do not know."
"Helpful."
Mia looked at the cross hanging from his neck.
It was almost identical to the one Hannah had described.
"What did Daniel give you?"
Gabriel's hand moved instinctively to the chain.
"This?"
"Was it from him?"
"After our mother died."
"May I see it?"
Gabriel hesitated.
Then he removed the necklace and handed it to her.
Mia examined the clasp.
Nothing.
She turned the cross over.
A tiny number was engraved beneath the hinge.
617.
Mia froze.
Marco noticed.
"What?"
She looked toward the receipt from the attacker's shoe.
B14-VR-617.
"The number."
Gabriel took the cross back.
"Six-one-seven."
"Same as the receipt."
Marco stared at it.
"Coincidence?"
Mia shook her head.
"Daniel was too careful for coincidence."
She reached for the microSD card.
"Put it back in the computer."
Price protested.
"She needs to lie still."
"I can lie still while thinking."
Gabriel inserted the card.
The three encrypted files appeared.
Mia selected the first.
A password prompt opened.
She typed 617.
Access denied.
Gabriel said nothing.
Mia tried B14.
Denied.
She tried VR617.
Denied.
Marco leaned against the counter.
"Maybe not a password."
Mia looked at the file names.
CROWN.
RAIN.
HOME.
She stared at HOME.
"What was Daniel's middle name?"
Gabriel looked at her.
"Marco used it to verify himself with you."
"Yes."
"What is it?"
Gabriel hesitated.
"Joseph."
Mia typed JOSEPH617.
The file opened.
Inside was a scanned legal document.
Daniel Romano Living Trust.
Gabriel stepped closer.
Mia scrolled.
The trust owned forty-one percent of Romano Maritime, three warehouses, two apartment buildings, and a controlling interest in a company Gabriel had never heard of.
North Lake Custodial Holdings.
Beneficiary upon Daniel's death: Leo Daniel Romano.
Trustee until Leo turned twenty-five: Hannah Romano.
Successor trustee if Hannah became incapacitated or deceased: Gabriel Romano.
Gabriel frowned.
"Then Vittorio gains nothing from guardianship."
Mia scrolled farther.
An amendment appeared.
Dated four days before Daniel's crash.
If Leo had not yet been born at the time of Daniel's death, temporary voting control would remain with a three-person family board.
Gabriel read the names.
Vittorio Romano.
Adrian Vale.
Gabriel Romano.
Mia's stomach tightened.
"That gives Vittorio influence, not ownership."
"Unless something removes me."
Marco looked at him.
"Or frames you."
Gabriel turned slowly toward the computer.
Mia opened the next page.
A handwritten note had been scanned beneath the amendment.
Daniel's writing was unmistakable.
Gabe, if they use my death to come after you, follow the rain.
Mia looked at the file list.
RAIN.
She clicked it.
Another password prompt appeared.
Gabriel stared at the screen.
"What does follow the rain mean?"
Mia's eyes widened.
"The night Daniel died."
"It was raining."
"The weather report."
She looked at Marco.
"What was the exact date?"
Marco gave it.
Mia typed the date as eight digits.
The file opened.
A spreadsheet appeared.
Hundreds of rows filled the screen.
Payments.
Dates.
Account numbers.
Vehicle identifiers.
Mia scrolled to the final week.
One row was highlighted in yellow.
CROWN HARBOR LOGISTICS.
$2,400,000.
Authorization: G. ROMANO.
Route: B14.
Reference: VR-617.
Gabriel stared at the screen.
"There it is."
Mia kept reading.
A hidden comment icon sat inside the final cell.
She opened it.
One sentence appeared.
IF THIS CLEARS, THEY MOVE THE TRUCK ON THE 17TH.
Marco's face went pale.
"Daniel died on the seventeenth."
Mia nodded.
Gabriel looked at the receipt from the dead attacker.
B14-VR-617.
"It was not a code for tonight."
Mia understood.
"It was the code for Daniel's crash."
Price stopped what he was doing.
Gabriel stared at the old spreadsheet.
Eighteen months of grief collapsed into one terrible certainty.
Someone had paid for the truck that killed his brother.
And someone had reused the same code while hunting Mia and Leo.
Marco's phone rang again.
He checked the number.
"Unknown."
Gabriel answered.
A man's voice spoke quietly.
"You finally found the rain file."
Gabriel recognized the voice.
So did Marco.
Damian Sterling.
"You have ten seconds before I hang up," Gabriel said.
Sterling laughed softly.
"Then use them well."
Gabriel's eyes hardened.
"You killed my brother."
"No."
"Your company took the money."
"My company took money for a job."
"What job?"
Sterling's voice turned serious.
"To delay Daniel's car by four minutes."
Gabriel said nothing.
"The truck was not mine."
Mia leaned closer to the phone.
"Then whose was it?"
Sterling heard her.
There was a pause.
"Mia Carver."
Gabriel's grip tightened.
Sterling continued.
"I was wondering whether you survived."
"You had men at the warehouse."
"Some of them."
"And the others?"
Sterling's voice became grim.
"Romano men wearing my colors."
Gabriel looked at Marco.
Sterling spoke again.
"If you want the name of the man who ordered Daniel's death, bring Mia to me."
Gabriel's expression turned lethal.
"Try again."
"You misunderstand."
"No, Damian."
Gabriel looked at Mia.
"You misunderstand."
Sterling exhaled.
"Then enjoy being betrayed by your own blood."
The call ended.
Mia looked at Gabriel.
"He wants the card."
"He wants you."
"Same reason."
Gabriel shook his head.
"Not anymore."
Before Mia could ask what he meant, the basement door opened.
Hannah stood there holding Leo's empty car seat.
Two of Marco's men were behind her.
Her face was pale with fury.
"Where is my son?"
Gabriel looked toward the crib.
Hannah crossed the room, lifted Leo, and pressed him against her chest.
She cried without making a sound.
Mia looked away to give her privacy.
After a long minute, Hannah faced Gabriel.
"Now tell me everything."
Gabriel looked at the computer.
"I will."
Hannah shook her head.
"No."
She reached into the diaper bag hanging from her shoulder.
"First, you need to see what Daniel left with me."
She removed a sealed black envelope.
Gabriel's name was written across the front in Daniel's handwriting.
Beneath it were five words.
