Chapter 12 - The Brother No One Named

Gabriel looked at Adrian for a long time.

The terminal seemed to recede around them.

"Say it."

Adrian did not.

"Say it yourself."

Adrian's voice was barely audible.

"Salvatore Romano was my father."

Hannah, listening from a secure line Marco had opened, went silent.

Mia watched Gabriel's face.

There was no visible shock at first.

That frightened her more than anger.

"How old are you?"

Adrian blinked at the question.

"Fifty-one."

Gabriel did the math instantly.

"Twelve years older than me."

"Yes."

"Before my parents married."

"Yes."

"Did my mother know?"

Adrian looked down.

"Eventually."

Gabriel's hand tightened around the black ledger.

"June seventeenth."

Adrian nodded.

"That was the night she learned."

The family code suddenly made sense.

A date Salvatore used as a private memorial to the day his marriage broke.

A date that later became embedded across Crown.

A date Daniel died on because Vittorio knew exactly how to turn old guilt into camouflage.

Gabriel laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

"My father built a hidden financial system for you."

Adrian looked at the screen.

"Not exactly."

"Then explain exactly."

Adrian pulled a chair away from the console and sat.

For once, the attorney did not look polished.

He looked old.

"My mother was a legal secretary named Margaret Vale."

"I know who Margaret Vale was."

Gabriel's voice sharpened.

"She worked for my father until she died."

"Yes."

"And every Christmas you came to our house because you were the brilliant young attorney my father mentored."

Adrian's eyes closed.

"Yes."

"You sat at our table."

"I know."

"Daniel asked you to be his son's godfather."

Adrian looked at Leo on the secure video feed.

"I know."

Gabriel stepped forward.

"And you never told us you were our brother."

Adrian's control broke.

"Your father ordered me not to."

"He is dead."

"So was your mother by then."

"Daniel was alive."

Adrian looked toward the black ledger.

"Daniel found out."

Gabriel froze.

"When?"

"Eight months before he died."

"And he said nothing to me?"

"He wanted me to tell you myself."

"Why did you not?"

Adrian's voice became bitter.

"Because I had spent forty years learning what happened when a Romano secret became public."

Mia leaned against the console.

"And because of Crown."

Adrian looked at her.

"Yes."

Gabriel turned toward the screen.

"What was Crown originally?"

Adrian took a breath.

"A trust."

"For you."

"For my mother first."

He looked at the old account list.

"Your father could not publicly acknowledge us without destroying his marriage, so he created a group of legitimate shipping investments under a separate structure."

"Crown."

"Yes."

"And Vittorio stole it."

Adrian nodded.

"He discovered the structure because he handled tax planning for Salvatore."

Mia looked at the ledger.

"He realized hidden money was easier to steal because nobody could admit it existed."

Adrian met her eyes.

"Exactly."

"My father found it."

"Elias found the theft."

"And you promised him protection."

Adrian looked away.

Mia's voice hardened.

"Did you know Vittorio was going to kill him?"

"No."

"Before or after?"

Adrian flinched.

"After."

"How long after?"

"Two days."

Mia stared at him.

"And you did nothing."

"I moved you."

"You moved my resume."

"I put you where Vittorio would see you as harmless."

Mia laughed in disbelief.

"Inside the company he controlled."

"Inside Gabriel's division."

She stopped.

Adrian looked at Gabriel.

"Vittorio was afraid of him."

Gabriel's face remained hard.

"Yet you did not trust me enough to tell me any of this."

"Your father taught me not to."

Gabriel stepped closer.

"Do not blame a dead man for every cowardly decision you made alive."

Adrian absorbed the sentence.

"Fair."

Mia looked at him.

"Did you help cover up my father's crash?"

Adrian's eyes met hers.

"Yes."

The answer cut through the room.

Mia stopped breathing.

Gabriel moved between them before she could react.

Not to protect Adrian.

To keep Mia from tearing open her stitches by crossing the room too fast.

"Move," she said.

"No."

"Gabriel."

"You want him alive long enough to explain."

Her eyes burned.

"Do I?"

"Yes."

Adrian spoke behind him.

"The police report named brake failure."

Mia's voice shook.

"Was that true?"

"The brake line had been cut."

She closed her eyes.

For six years she had imagined her father losing control on a wet road.

She had hated the mechanic.

She had hated the old car.

She had hated herself for not calling him back that evening because she was angry over money.

Now the truth stood ten feet away wearing a thousand-dollar suit.

"Who cut it?"

"A man named Raymond Kessler."

Marco looked up.

"Kessler worked for Vittorio."

Adrian nodded.

"He disappeared three months later."

Mia opened her eyes.

"And you buried the evidence."

"Vittorio threatened to kill you next."

"So you protected me with ignorance."

"Yes."

"You do not get to call that protection."

Adrian's eyes filled with something close to shame.

"I know."

Gabriel moved aside only when Mia stopped shaking.

She did not attack Adrian.

That restraint cost more than anyone said.

Hannah's voice came through the speaker.

"Did Daniel know all of this?"

Adrian looked toward the line.

"Most of it."

"Did he know Elias was murdered?"

"Yes."

Mia looked at the black ledger.

"That is why he came to my father."

Adrian nodded.

"Daniel believed Elias had left a master key that could prove Vittorio's theft."

"He was right."

"Yes."

"Did Daniel give you the Box 617 arrangement before or after he suspected you?"

"Before."

"And later he moved the evidence without telling you."

"Yes."

Mia understood.

Daniel had trusted Adrian as a brother before discovering Adrian was still hiding too much.

Then Daniel had built a trail around everyone.

Even Gabriel.

Gabriel looked at the Crown screen.

"Can this prove Vittorio stole the money?"

Mia returned to the console.

"The key opens the master ledger."

"Can it prove murder?"

"Money can prove motive and payment."

"Not the act."

"Sterling's recording helps Daniel."

Marco added, "And the photograph of Vittorio with the truck."

Adrian looked at them.

"Not enough."

Gabriel turned.

"Why?"

"Because Vittorio has spent eighteen months building the opposite case."

"Against me."

"Yes."

Adrian pointed at the Crown screen.

"He routed every operational payment through cloned credentials tied to Gabriel."

Mia's face hardened.

"Then we prove the credential was cloned."

"How?"

"Access logs."

"Vittorio controls the servers now."

Marco said, "Not all of them."

Everyone looked at him.

"Security maintains an immutable off-site record for executive access events."

Gabriel's eyes sharpened.

"Where?"

"Data vault beneath headquarters."

Dante laughed from the doorway.

"Which my father controls tonight."

Marco looked at him.

"Physical controls maybe."

Dante smiled.

"He changed the authentication keys at midnight."

Mia looked at Gabriel.

"Then we need another way in."

Adrian shook his head.

"Not tonight."

"Why?"

"Because the board is meeting again at five."

Gabriel checked the time.

3:46 a.m.

"To do what?"

Adrian looked at him.

"Authorize disclosure of Daniel's murder evidence to law enforcement."

Mia understood.

"Vittorio wants federal agents to receive the forged case before we can retrieve the logs."

"Yes."

Gabriel's phone vibrated.

An emergency news alert appeared.

ROMANO HOLDINGS CEO GABRIEL ROMANO REMOVED AMID INTERNAL INVESTIGATION.

A second alert followed.

SOURCES: NEW EVIDENCE MAY LINK ROMANO TO BROTHER'S FATAL CRASH.

Hannah gasped over the speaker.

Marco swore.

Mia looked at Gabriel.

His face was completely still.

Then a third alert appeared.

This one included a photograph.

Gabriel's forged authorization beside a photograph of Daniel's wrecked car.

Below it was another image.

Mia leaving the parking structure with Gabriel less than an hour earlier.

The caption identified her as a Romano financial officer under investigation for destroying evidence.

Mia stared at the screen.

"They framed me too."

Adrian looked grim.

Gabriel handed the phone back to Marco.

"Good."

Everyone looked at him.

Mia frowned.

"Good?"

Gabriel's eyes were cold.

"Vittorio thinks public pressure makes us weaker."

He picked up Daniel's ledger.

"Now he has made sure every move he makes gets watched."

Adrian shook his head.

"You are missing the problem."

"Which one?"

"The federal warrant packet was submitted eleven minutes ago."

Gabriel stared at him.

"For me?"

Adrian looked at Mia.

May you like

"For both of you."
