Chapter 7 - The Red Box

Sarah had kept a red metal recipe box on the top shelf of the pantry for years.
It was where she stored birthday candles, old photographs, and scraps of paper she couldn't bear to throw away.
The police had inventoried the kitchen but not opened every sentimental container.
Ortiz returned with a warrant and found the box exactly where Sarah described.
Inside was a child's first drawing, a receipt for a broken bracelet, and a flash drive tucked beneath a false cardboard bottom.
The video showed a man sitting in my office and signing contracts in my name.
He wore my blue suit.
He had my haircut.
His face was digitally altered in places, but even without expert analysis I could see that he was not me.
The room's clock showed a date when I'd been in Boston with a verified client.
Rachel nearly smiled.
“An alibi and the source footage. We can work with this.”
Then a second video played.
Sarah stood inside a conference room with Victor and Claire.
Victor slid a document across the table.
“Your husband's signature solves one problem,” he said. “Your testimony solves the other.”
Sarah asked what would happen if she refused.
Claire replied, “Ask yourself how quickly a child can disappear.”
I felt the words like a physical blow.
The recording did not erase Sarah's failures.
It did prove she'd been threatened.
We handed both videos to investigators, along with the physical drive.
Marcus called while I was leaving the station.
“I heard you found something,” he said.
“How?”
“People talk.”
“Then tell me why Sarah warned me about you.”
Marcus did not respond immediately.
“Because I gave Victor access to your office,” he admitted.
I stopped walking.
“You what?”
“He said he needed due diligence documents. I thought it was a standard audit.”
“Was it?”
“No.”
His voice broke.
“Daniel, my son owes money to people Victor works with.”
I had known Marcus for fifteen years.
He had stood beside me when our first server failed and when our first client signed.
Now he admitted he'd opened the door.
“I didn't know they'd come for your family,” he said.
I wanted to believe him.
Then Ortiz forwarded one final still image from the pantry footage.

It showed Marcus entering Sarah's house on Friday, forty minutes after she'd left.
