Chapter 19 - The Point of No Return

Claire's statement changed the stakes.
She claimed that copies of the software's source code had been delivered to a foreign purchaser months earlier.
A source-code copy was not the same thing as legal ownership, but it could create enormous harm.
Our engineers checked access logs, build records, and repository permissions under supervised audit conditions.
They found evidence of unauthorized downloads from Rebecca's account.
Our security team isolated affected credentials and verified backup integrity.
Victor had prepared to monetize the technology whether his boardroom operation succeeded or not.
I asked the board to disclose the breach to affected partners and regulators as required.
The announcement would damage us.
Concealing it would be worse.
Rachel warned that the next step would make any private settlement nearly impossible.
I signed the disclosure anyway.
The company I had built couldn't survive by adopting Victor's methods.
Claire provided investigators with a written record of her instructions.
She said she'd warned Victor the children might not be safe and had been ordered not to interfere.
She admitted she'd gone to the house Sunday and looked through the window.
She'd seen Ethan there.
She walked away.
No explanation she offered could make that act disappear.
The prosecutors considered the evidence alongside the conduct of every adult involved.
At home, Emma asked to sleep with the hallway light on.
Ethan asked whether bad people could buy a house and make everyone leave.
I explained that money could give people choices, but it did not give them permission to hurt others.
He thought about that.
“Then why did they do it?”
“Because they chose to,” I said.
He leaned against me.
“I choose you and Emma.”
I held him and watched the light from Emma's room reach across the carpet.
The next morning, Rachel told me the grand jury had returned indictments against Victor and several associates for crimes supported by the investigation.
The exact charges and questions of guilt would be tested in court.
Victor was arrested at his office.
News cameras recorded him stepping into an elevator beside federal agents.
He looked more annoyed than afraid.
As he passed the cameras, he delivered one last threat.
“Daniel still hasn't told you what his wife did.”
The reporters turned toward me.
May you like
And I realized the final reckoning would not be about Victor alone.
