Chapter 3 - The Woman Behind the Glass

At two in the morning, Detective Ortiz let me see the security photograph recovered from the hotel lobby.
It showed Sarah entering beside Victor Hale.
But the photograph did not show a romantic weekend.
Sarah's shoulders were rigid.
One hand held a suitcase.
The other gripped a small white envelope.
A woman in a gray coat walked a few steps behind them.
“Who is she?” I asked.
Ortiz shook her head.
“We're working on it.”
I knew Sarah's expressions better than any camera did.
When she had fallen in love with me, she smiled with her whole face.
When she was angry, her jaw tightened just once before she spoke.
In that photograph she looked as though she'd forgotten how to breathe.
I wanted it to mean she had been forced.
I also remembered Emma curled beneath a blanket.
Whatever had happened to Sarah, she had left two small children behind.
The clinic confirmed only that a patient matching her description was being evaluated and could choose whether to speak with police.
Rachel cautioned me not to visit without coordination.
“Victor will turn every move you make into evidence,” she said.
At dawn Emma opened her eyes for the first time.
“Daddy?” she whispered.
Her voice was barely louder than the machines.
I leaned close enough for her to touch my cheek.
“I'm here, sweetheart.”
She tried to smile, then fell asleep again.
I cried in the empty corridor where Ethan couldn't see me.
At seven-thirty, Rachel played me a recording from an anonymous number.
Victor's voice was unmistakable.
“Daniel will surrender control when he understands the cost of refusing.”
Another voice replied, “You promised no one would get hurt.”
It was Sarah.
I wanted to punch a wall.
Instead, I asked Rachel to copy the file, preserve its metadata, and send it to Ortiz.
The voice recording might be a forgery.
It might have been edited.
Or it might be our first clean view of the truth.
At eight, the board meeting began without me.
At eight-oh-six, Rachel's assistant sent the vote.
Six directors had voted to place me on temporary leave.
Three had opposed it.
My company had been taken from me while my daughter lay in a hospital bed.
Then a message appeared on my screen from Sarah's number.
Please do not trust the woman in gray.
Seconds later a second message arrived.

She is already with the children.
