Chapter 1 - The Name on the Reservation

The name on the hotel reservation was Victor Hale.

Victor was the chairman of Hale Meridian Capital, the firm that had spent six months trying to purchase forty percent of my company.

Three hours earlier, I had been prepared to shake his hand.

Now my daughter was fighting for her life and his name was on a hotel room booked with my wife.

Ethan watched my face with the dreadful attention of a child who had learned that adults could become dangerous without warning.

“Am I in trouble?”

I tucked the paper inside my jacket.

“No, buddy. You helped me understand something.”

The emergency department doors opened and Dr. Maya Chen approached us.

“Emma's severely dehydrated,” she said. “She also has pneumonia. We're giving her fluids and antibiotics, but she needs close monitoring.”

I asked whether she would survive.

Dr. Chen refused to make a promise she could not keep.

Instead, she touched my arm and said, “You got her here. That's what matters now.”

A hospital social worker named Grace Alvarez joined us a few minutes later.

She asked the questions I had been asking myself since the phone call.

Why hadn't I visited since Thursday?

Why had the custody schedule changed?

Why did Sarah's messages say Emma was spending the weekend at her grandmother's house?

I showed her the texts.

Grace read them twice.

“Save these,” she said. “And don't contact anyone who might change the story before the investigators do.”

My phone vibrated with twenty-two unread messages from Victor.

The last one said, We should finish the deal before your personal issues get worse.

I read that sentence until the words lost meaning.

Then I called my attorney, Rachel Stone.

“Tell me you didn't sign,” she said as soon as I explained.

“I didn't.”

“Good. Because this afternoon somebody filed an emergency motion claiming you're mentally unfit to manage your company.”

I stared at Ethan, who had fallen asleep against a hospital chair with the dinosaur clutched to his chest.

“Who filed it?”

Rachel hesitated.

“Your wife supplied the declaration.”

Beyond the glass, a monitor sounded a warning inside Emma's room.

And I understood that the hotel reservation was only the beginning.
