Chapter 16 - The Lowest Room

The old transaction forced me to confront the possibility that Sarah had not merely been trapped.
Four years earlier she'd accepted money from a holding company associated with Victor.
The funds had paid off personal debts she'd hidden from me.
At the time we had been struggling with Emma's birth and the pressure of expanding my company.
I had believed our marriage was merely tired.
Sarah admitted she had taken the money knowingly.
She claimed Victor initially called it compensation for introducing investors.
Only later did the arrangement become coercive.
I listened without deciding what forgiveness should look like.
“Did you ever tell him about our kids?”
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
My chest tightened.
“Did you give him our custody schedule?”
“Yes.”
I looked away.
She had opened the first door long before the scheme became a threat.
Meanwhile, Victor appealed the temporary restrictions and launched a public campaign blaming the scandal on a family disagreement.
Shareholders began demanding my resignation.
Several major clients paused contracts.
Employees who had done nothing wrong feared losing their jobs.
The cost of exposing Victor was falling on innocent people too.
I met the staff remotely and told them the company would cooperate fully with the audit.
I refused to promise that everything would be fine.
At home, Ethan woke from a nightmare calling for Emma.
I found him in the hallway outside her room.
“She wasn't moving again,” he whispered.
I carried him back to bed and stayed until morning.
Emma, who had been sleeping better, brought him her pink rabbit before breakfast.
The gesture was small and astonishingly brave.
For the first time in days I let myself imagine them happy.
Then Ortiz informed me that Julian Price, the accountant who had come forward, had disappeared.
He missed a scheduled interview and left his phone behind.
His attorney had no explanation.
A text delivered from Julian's account said, Drop the case or lose everything.
I could not tell whether he'd been threatened, bribed, or gone into hiding.
By evening Victor's lawyers claimed new evidence proving the entire hard drive was fabricated.
The court set a decisive hearing for the next day.
Rachel was exhausted.
I was exhausted.
And then Naomi said something that stopped us both.
May you like
“Daniel, we have been reading the account backward.”
