Chapter 12 - The Friday Nobody Spoke About

Rachel and Ortiz assembled a minute-by-minute timeline of Friday.
At nine twelve, Sarah drove Ethan to school and Emma to preschool.
At eleven fifteen, Rebecca sent my office schedule to Victor.
At noon, Claire transferred money into Sarah's charity account.
At two ten, Sarah picked up the children early, claiming a family appointment.
At three twenty, Victor arrived at the house.
At four eight, he left with Sarah.
At four forty-eight, Marcus entered.
At five eleven, Rebecca sent me a message saying Emma was at her grandmother's house.
Each event seemed ordinary when separated.
Together they formed a trap.
“Why didn't the schools call?” I asked.
“The children were released to their mother,” Ortiz replied.
“What about their grandmother?”
“She was out of the country and never told anyone she had them.”
We were one unanswered phone call away from a different outcome.
The guilt pressed against me until even sleep felt like betrayal.
Dr. Chen asked whether I had anyone helping with the children.
I admitted that I was trying to do everything myself.
“You don't have to prove you're present by never resting,” she said.
So I let my sister, Laura, bring meals and watch Ethan while I attended legal meetings.
Laura's first words upon seeing Emma were gentle.
“Hi, peanut. I brought the purple socks you like.”
Emma smiled.
It was a small soundless thing.
It nearly brought me to my knees.
At the corporate office, the audit committee discovered Marcus had authorized temporary access to our servers and permitted Rebecca to copy confidential files.
His trust had paid Claire for what he described as consulting.
Marcus claimed he was being blackmailed through his son's debts.
That might mitigate part of his conduct.
It did not explain why he had left my children alone.
The board suspended him.
For an hour, it seemed like justice might have a shape.
Then Victor secured enough proxy votes to move ahead with the emergency sale.
Rachel told me our legal challenge might not be heard until after the meeting.
“We need an injunction,” she said.
“And we need evidence he knew the property was stolen.”
At that exact moment, Ortiz received a call from an airport police officer.
Claire had been detained before boarding a flight.
