Chapter 9 - EMMA'S WARNING

Daniel drove back into the city before sunrise because he refused to watch Emma's video through a forwarded file.
He wanted to see it in the evidence room where the forensic team had preserved the original copy.
Lily stayed at the guesthouse with Rebecca's sister and two uniformed officers assigned by Detective Hernandez.
Rebecca rode with Daniel.
Neither spoke much.
Daniel's mind had already built a thousand versions of the sentence Hernandez had given him.
Victor was covering for someone else.
Every possibility felt worse than the last.
At the police department, Hernandez led them into a small interview room with a wall-mounted screen.
The forensic examiner explained that the microSD card contained several encrypted folders.
The first folder had been unlocked using a password embedded in a metadata field.
The password was LILYBLUEBIRD.
Daniel almost smiled because Emma had always hidden serious things behind ordinary family references.
Then the video began.
Emma appeared on the screen sitting in the same home office Daniel had searched two nights earlier.
She looked tired.
Her hair was pulled back carelessly.
A coffee mug sat beside her.
The date stamp showed the recording was made twenty-three days before her death.
Emma looked directly into the camera.
"Daniel, if you're seeing this, then I either ran out of time or I lost control of what I found."
Daniel stopped breathing.
He had not heard Emma's voice in nearly two years.
The sound struck him with enough force that he had to grip the edge of the table.
Rebecca looked away to give him privacy he did not have.
Emma continued.
"I need you to listen to everything before you confront your father."
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
Even from the past, Emma knew him.
"Victor is involved, but Victor did not design the original theft."
The image flickered.
"Leonard Shaw did."
Daniel stared at the screen.
Emma described how Leonard had used his role as outside counsel to create vendors that appeared legitimate during surface audits.
Thomas Rowan had approved payments because Leonard provided contracts carrying Victor's authorization.
When one vendor failed a compliance review, Leonard redirected the audit toward Thomas.
Victor discovered what Leonard had done.
Instead of exposing him, Victor chose to protect the company from scandal.
He testified against Thomas and allowed prosecutors to believe Thomas controlled the entire scheme.
Emma's voice tightened.
"Victor told himself he was protecting thousands of employees and the family name."
She paused.
"What he protected was Leonard."
Daniel looked at Hernandez.
The detective was taking notes without expression.
Emma continued.
"Thomas kept copies."
The next sentence changed the room.
"That is why he was never safe in prison."
Daniel leaned forward.
Thomas Rowan had officially died after a medical emergency.
Emma did not accuse anyone of killing him.
She said only that Thomas believed Leonard still had people watching him and that his records had been repeatedly seized or destroyed.
Then Emma spoke about Claire.
"Thomas has two daughters."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Nicole is older, and Claire is younger."
A photograph appeared on the screen.
Claire looked about twenty-five.
Nicole stood beside her.
Thomas was between them.
"They have been told their father stole from Mercer Industrial and died because the Mercer family made an example of him."
Emma shook her head.
"That story is only half true, which makes it more dangerous than a complete lie."
Daniel heard Claire's voice in his memory.
Your family destroyed mine.
Emma continued.
"Victor knows who Claire is."
Daniel glanced at Rebecca.
"He has met with her at least twice."
Daniel's hands went cold.
"I don't know what he told her."
Emma looked down at notes.
"But if he tells her I was responsible for Thomas's conviction, he is lying."
Daniel felt a strange mixture of vindication and dread.
"I was trying to reopen the evidence because I believed Thomas."
Emma leaned toward the camera.
"If Claire ever comes near our family, do not assume she knows that."
Daniel whispered.
"She didn't."
The video continued.
Emma explained that she had located part of the stolen money.
Some funds had sat untouched in a dormant offshore structure before moving back into domestic accounts controlled by Northstar Advisory Group.
Emma and Thomas had planned to provide the evidence to federal investigators.
Thomas died before that could happen.
Emma then made an extraordinary decision.
She created a recovery reserve inside Lily's trust structure.
The reserve was legally separate from Lily's personal inheritance but administered by the same independent trustee.
Its purpose was to preserve recovered money until ownership could be determined by a court.
Daniel looked at Rebecca.
"You knew about that?"
Rebecca shook her head.
"No."
Emma answered the question from the screen.
"I did not tell Daniel because the fewer people who knew, the safer the evidence would be."
She looked tired when she said it.
"I'm sorry for that."
Daniel swallowed.
Emma explained that the reserve contained approximately 2.1 million dollars recovered from one of Leonard's old vendor channels.
Part of that money could ultimately belong to the Rowan family if Thomas's innocence was established.
Daniel finally understood why Claire believed Lily's accounts contained money stolen from her father.
Victor could have shown her just enough paperwork to make that belief seem undeniable.
Emma lifted a folder toward the camera.
"The ledger proves where the money came from."
She set it down.
"I am hiding copies in more than one place."
Daniel leaned closer.
"If anything happens to me, the person most likely to search for them is Leonard."
She paused.
"The second person is Victor."
Another pause.
"And if Victor has already convinced one of Thomas's daughters that I betrayed their father, then she may come looking too."
Daniel's stomach turned.
Emma looked directly into the camera again.
"Daniel, do not punish Claire for what Victor told her before you know what she actually did."
His jaw tightened.
Emma could not know what Claire would later do to Lily.
She could not see the backyard.
She could not hear her daughter begging to be allowed inside.
The video continued for another nine minutes.
Emma described account numbers, vendor codes, and names the forensic team would need weeks to verify.
Then she said something that made Daniel sit completely still.
"I am meeting Claire Rowan on Friday."
The date of the video was a Tuesday.
"She contacted me anonymously and asked whether I believed Thomas was guilty."
Emma gave a faint smile.
"I told her no."
Daniel felt his heartbeat change.
"She asked for proof."
Emma looked toward the office door before continuing.
"I agreed to show her enough to prove I am not her enemy."
Daniel remembered the photograph of Emma with Thomas.
"If the meeting goes well, Claire may help us."
The video ended.
Daniel stared at the black screen.
Hernandez spoke first.
"Do you know whether that meeting happened?"
Daniel shook his head.
"Emma died three weeks later."
Rebecca opened her laptop.
"We need Emma's calendar."
The forensic examiner had already recovered a partial backup from the buried phone.
The calendar showed an appointment on the Friday Emma mentioned.
The entry contained only one letter.
C.
Location data placed Emma at a coffee shop in Westerville for forty-seven minutes.
Security footage from two years earlier was long gone.
But Emma's phone records showed a call immediately after the meeting.
The recipient was Aaron Pike.
Hernandez called him.
Aaron remembered the conversation.
"Emma said the meeting was bad."
Daniel leaned toward the speakerphone.
"Bad how?"
"Claire didn't believe her."
"Why not?"
"Because someone had already shown Claire documents that appeared to prove Emma was moving money into Lily's trust."
Daniel looked at Rebecca.
"Victor."
Aaron continued.
"Emma said Claire accused her of stealing from Thomas twice."
"Did Emma tell Claire about Leonard?"
"She tried."
"And?"
"Claire said Leonard was the only person who had helped her family after Thomas went to prison."
Daniel felt another piece lock into place.
Leonard had not merely framed Thomas.
He had positioned himself as the Rowan family's ally afterward.
Rebecca whispered.
"He controlled both sides."
Aaron heard her.
"That's what Emma realized."
Daniel stared at the screen where Emma's face had disappeared.
"So Claire spent years believing Emma was the enemy because Leonard made her believe it."
Hernandez answered carefully.
"That may explain motive."
Daniel looked at him.
"It doesn't excuse what she did to Lily."
"No."
"Nothing does."
Hernandez nodded.
The forensic examiner entered the room with a printout.
Another encrypted folder had opened.
Its contents included scanned letters.
One was addressed to Claire Rowan.
Emma had written it eleven days before the crash.
The letter began with a sentence that made Daniel's throat tighten.
CLAIRE, YOUR FATHER WAS NOT A THIEF, AND I AM TRYING TO PROVE IT.
The letter was never sent.
At the bottom, Emma had written a handwritten note to herself.
DELIVER IN PERSON AFTER I GET THE ORIGINAL LEDGER.
Daniel looked at Hernandez.
"Did she ever get it?"
The examiner answered.
"We found a photograph of a ledger page in the same folder."
He placed the image on the table.
Three initials appeared beside a series of transfers.
L.S.
V.M.
And a third set Daniel did not recognize.
C.R.
Daniel stared at them.
Claire Rowan.
The date beside her initials was six months before Emma died.
