Chapter 14 - WHAT LILY FINALLY SAID

The child interview center had walls painted with clouds and cartoon animals.
Daniel hated the building anyway.
He hated that Lily needed to be there.
He hated that strangers needed to ask his daughter careful questions about the adults who had failed her.
He hated that protecting her now required reopening moments she had tried to forget.
The forensic interviewer explained everything before beginning.
Daniel would watch from another room.
He could not coach, interrupt, or signal answers.
Lily could stop at any time.
Daniel agreed.
Then Lily took his hand.
"Will you still be here when I'm done?"
"Right outside."
"Even if I say bad things?"
Daniel knelt.
"Especially then."
She studied his face.
"Promise?"
"Promise."
The interviewer, Ms. Avery, began with ordinary questions.
What grade was Lily in?
What was her favorite animal?
What did she like to eat?
Lily answered more easily after a few minutes.
Then Avery asked about rules at home.
Lily's shoulders changed.
Daniel saw it immediately.
"Who made rules in your house?"
"Daddy and Claire."
"Did they have the same rules?"
Lily shook her head.
"What were Claire's rules?"
"Don't ask about Mommy."
Daniel's stomach tightened.
"Any others?"
"Don't go in the office."
"Any others?"
"Don't tell Daddy when she asks questions."
Avery kept her tone neutral.
"What questions?"
"Where Mommy hid things."
"What things?"
"The bird."
"Anything else?"
Lily nodded.
"The red folder."
Daniel sat forward.
No one had mentioned a red folder before.
Avery asked Lily what it was.
"Mommy had it in her bag."
"Did you see it?"
"Yes."
"When?"
Lily looked down at her shoes.
"The night Claire came before Mommy went away."
Daniel stopped breathing.
Rebecca, sitting beside him, turned sharply.
Avery did not react.
"Claire came to your house before your mommy went away?"
Lily nodded.
"Was your daddy home?"
"No."
Daniel remembered the business trip he took three nights before Emma's crash.
Emma had stayed home with Lily.
"What happened?"
Lily's voice became softer.
"They talked loud."
"Who?"
"Mommy and Claire."
"Where were you?"
"On the stairs."
"Could they see you?"
"No."
"What did you hear?"
Lily squeezed her fingers together.
"Claire said Mommy was lying about her daddy."
Avery nodded.
"What did Mommy say?"
"She said she had proof."
Daniel felt tears rise.
Emma had continued trying to reach Claire even after the failed coffee-shop meeting.
"What happened next?"
"Mommy showed her papers."
"What color were they?"
"They were in the red folder."
"Did Claire take the folder?"
Lily shook her head.
"Mommy put it in her bag."
"Then what happened?"
Lily's breathing became uneven.
Avery slowed down.
"Do you want a break?"
Lily shook her head.
"Claire cried."
"Why?"
"She said she didn't know."
"Didn't know what?"
"That the lawyer man was bad."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Leonard.
Avery continued carefully.
"Did Claire say anything else?"
Lily nodded.
"She said she would help Mommy."
Daniel looked at Rebecca.
That changed the timeline.
Claire had briefly believed Emma.
At least for one night.
"What happened after Claire left?"
Lily stared at the floor.
"Mommy called somebody."
"Do you know who?"
"No."
"Did Mommy say anything?"
Lily nodded.
"She said, Claire will testify."
Daniel felt a chill.
Emma had turned Claire into a potential witness.
That would have terrified Leonard.
Avery asked whether Lily saw Claire again before Emma died.
Lily shook her head.
Then she paused.
"On the phone."
"What do you mean?"
"Mommy's phone rang in the morning."
"Did you see who called?"
"Claire's picture."
"Did you hear the call?"
"A little."
Daniel leaned forward until his knees touched the observation-room wall.
"What did Mommy say?"
Lily's lips trembled.
"She said, Why did you tell him where I'm going?"
Daniel's entire body went cold.
Avery remained gentle.
"Did you hear what Claire said?"
"No."
"What did Mommy say next?"
Lily's eyes filled.
"She said, You don't understand what you just did."
Daniel covered his mouth.
Rebecca whispered.
"Claire gave Leonard Emma's location."
Avery asked Lily whether this happened on the day of the crash.
Lily nodded.
"Mommy was wearing the blue coat."
Daniel remembered that coat.
Police photographs from the accident showed it folded beneath a paramedic blanket.
Lily remembered because Emma kissed her goodbye in it that morning.
Avery changed direction when Lily became distressed.
They talked about school and friends for several minutes.
Then she asked about Claire after the marriage.
"Did Claire ever talk about that phone call?"
Lily nodded.
"She told me I remembered wrong."
"How did she know what you remembered?"
"I asked why she made Mommy mad before heaven."
Daniel felt another wave of guilt.
Lily had carried that memory alone.
"What did Claire say?"
"She said Mommy was already confused."
"Anything else?"
"She said if I told Daddy, he would think I was making Mommy's accident his fault."
Daniel lowered his head.
That was how Claire had silenced her.
Not with one threat.
With guilt.
She had made a six-year-old believe telling the truth could destroy her father.
Avery asked about the backyard.
Lily explained that Claire had searched her closet that morning and discovered the bluebird was missing from its usual hiding place.
Lily had moved it to a different cavity because she heard Claire talking to Victor about finding the card by Friday.
Claire became furious.
She took Lily outside and demanded the new hiding place.
When Lily refused, Claire told her she would stay beneath the tree until she cooperated.
Mark saw the final part.
The camera had captured only the visible end of a much longer confrontation.
"Why didn't you tell your dad when he got home?"
Avery asked.
Lily looked toward the observation-room wall as if she knew Daniel sat behind it.
"Because Claire said Daddy might go away too."
Daniel cried silently.
The interview lasted seventy-three minutes.
When Lily came out, Daniel dropped to his knees and opened both arms.
She ran into them.
"Are you mad?"
"No."
"Not even about Mommy?"
"Never at you."
Lily began crying.
Daniel held her until she stopped.
That afternoon, Hernandez confronted Claire with the new information.
Claire requested her attorney but agreed to answer after consulting privately.
Daniel chose not to watch this interview.
He stayed with Lily at the guesthouse.
Hernandez called afterward.
"She admitted the phone call."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"What did she say?"
"She says Leonard called her after she left your house."
"How did he know she had been there?"
"He was monitoring her phone."
"Convenient."
"Maybe."
Hernandez continued.
"Claire says Leonard threatened Nicole."
"With what?"
"He had evidence that Nicole used false documents in the dealership records office."
"Because he told her to."
"That's Claire's claim."
"And Claire gave him Emma's location to protect Nicole."
"Yes."
Daniel looked at Lily through the kitchen doorway.
"Did Claire know Leonard would follow Emma?"
"She says she thought he only wanted the red folder."
"Do you believe her?"
Hernandez paused.
"I believe she knew enough to understand Emma was afraid."
Daniel's voice went flat.
"Then the rest doesn't matter to me."
Hernandez had another development.
Claire had provided the encryption phrase for a Northstar account archive.
The phrase came from a saying Thomas used when she was a child.
The account records revealed payments to Leonard, Victor, Nicole, Claire, and several intermediaries.
They also revealed a reserve labeled MERCER SUCCESSION.
"What's that?"
Daniel asked.
"We don't know yet."
The reserve contained 1.7 million dollars.
Its transaction notes referenced D.M. CAPACITY EVENT and L.M. CONTROL.
Daniel stared at the abbreviations.
"Daniel Mercer and Lily Mercer."
"That's our working assumption."
The next line in the ledger was dated two months after Daniel married Claire.
It read PHASE FOUR FUNDED.
Daniel's heartbeat accelerated.
"The LILY CONTINGENCY plan had four phases."
"The copy we found did."
"Then what's Phase Four?"
Hernandez corrected him.
"The document we found ended at Phase Four."
Daniel went still.
"You think there's a Phase Five."
"Claire says there was."
"What was it?"
The detective's voice became grim.
May you like
"Permanent control."
