Chapter 7 - THE MAN LILY CALLED GRANDPA

Daniel watched the seven-second clip until Detective Hernandez reached over and closed the laptop.
"That's enough."
Daniel looked at him.
"No, it isn't."
"Watching it twenty more times won't change what he said."
Daniel's chest felt tight.
For months, he had blamed himself for missing Claire's behavior.
Now he had to face something even worse.
His own father had known Claire was pressuring Lily.
Victor had not merely failed to protect his granddaughter.
He had encouraged silence.
Rebecca sat across from Daniel with both hands wrapped around untouched coffee.
"We need the original file preserved by the vendor."
Hernandez nodded.
"Already requested."
"Can you arrest Victor?"
Daniel asked the question too quickly.
Hernandez gave him a measured look.
"For what we have right now, I can interview him."
"You heard what he said."
"I did."
"He told Claire to make Lily stay quiet."
"And I need context, authentication, and evidence tying that statement to specific conduct."
Daniel stood.
"Context?"
Rebecca rose too.
"Daniel."
He ignored her.
"My daughter has bruises, money is missing from her account, Claire used a false identity, and my father was secretly searching my dead wife's office."
Hernandez did not flinch.
"Which is why I'm treating this seriously."
Daniel's anger hit the wall of the detective's calm.
"Then do something."
"I am."
Hernandez stepped closer.
"But if Victor has spent years hiding financial crimes, the fastest way to lose the case is to move before we can prove it."
Daniel hated that too.
He sat back down.
"What happens now?"
"We get warrants."
"For Victor's house?"
"Potentially."
"For Claire's phone?"
"That's already moving."
Rebecca added another question.
"What about Leonard Shaw?"
"We're checking his travel records and the company vehicle logs from the day Emma died."
Daniel stared at the dark laptop screen.
"My father is going to know we're coming."
Hernandez nodded.
"Probably."
"He'll destroy things."
"Which is why you don't contact him."
Daniel almost laughed.
"He has been inside my house without permission, deleting cameras and helping Claire search for something my wife hid."
"And that is exactly why you do not warn him."
Daniel agreed.
He lasted less than an hour before Victor contacted him first.
The text arrived at 3:11 p.m.
YOU ARE LETTING STRANGERS TEAR APART YOUR FAMILY.
Daniel showed it to Hernandez and did not respond.
A second message appeared.
EMMA MADE THE SAME MISTAKE.
Daniel stared at those words.
Hernandez photographed the screen.
"Do not answer."
Daniel looked at him.
"He just threatened me."
"He may have."
"May have?"
"I want him to keep talking without knowing which statements matter."
Daniel put the phone facedown.
Lily came downstairs after her afternoon rest.
She stopped when she saw Hernandez.
The detective smiled gently.
"Hi, Lily."
She stayed near Daniel.
"Hi."
Daniel asked if she wanted apple slices.
She nodded.
While he cut the apple, she watched the adults in the kitchen.
Then she asked a question no one expected.
"Is Grandpa going to come take me?"
Daniel set down the knife.
"No."
Lily's fingers tightened around the rabbit.
"Claire said he could."
Hernandez crouched to her level.
"When did Claire say that?"
Lily looked at Daniel for permission.
He nodded.
"You can tell him."
"When Daddy went to Germany."
That was the week the forged trust document had been signed.
Hernandez kept his voice soft.
"What exactly did Claire say?"
"She said if Daddy got in trouble, Grandpa would decide where I live."
Daniel's stomach turned.
"Did Grandpa ever say that to you?"
Lily nodded.
Daniel sat beside her.
"Tell me what he said."
"He said good girls don't make grown-ups fight."
"Anything else?"
"He said Mommy fought too much."
Daniel looked away for a moment.
Hernandez continued.
"Did Grandpa ever ask you about the bluebird?"
Lily nodded again.
"A lot."
"What did he ask?"
"If Mommy gave me any toys before she went away."
"What did you say?"
"I said no."
"Was that true?"
Lily shook her head.
"Why did you say no?"
Lily looked down.
"Mommy told me not to tell Grandpa about the brave bird."
Daniel felt tears sting his eyes.
Emma had known Victor was dangerous enough to hide evidence from him.
She had also trusted a four-year-old child with a secret she believed could matter later.
That realization hurt almost as much as it frightened him.
"Did Mommy tell you why?"
Lily's forehead wrinkled.
"She said Grandpa likes doors that only open for him."
Rebecca looked sharply at Daniel.
Daniel understood the metaphor immediately.
Victor controlled information the same way he controlled company accounts, family decisions, and access to money.
Nothing moved unless Victor allowed it.
The next morning, news of the family conflict reached Mercer Industrial.
Daniel learned about it when his assistant sent him a link to a local business blog.
MERCER EXECUTIVE IN DOMESTIC DISPUTE AS FAMILY TRUST QUESTIONS SURFACE.
The article quoted an unnamed source claiming Daniel had become unstable after his first wife's death and was now making reckless accusations against his current spouse.
It mentioned no video.
It mentioned no deleted security footage.
It mentioned no missing money.
It made Daniel look like an angry husband using his wealth to punish Claire.
Rebecca read it beside him.
"This came from someone close to the family."
Daniel knew exactly who.
Victor had always believed the first version of a story was the one people remembered.
Within two hours, Mercer Industrial's board requested an emergency meeting.
Victor no longer held an executive position, but he still controlled significant voting shares and maintained strong relationships with older directors.
Daniel joined the meeting by secure video from home because he refused to leave Lily.
The chairman, Arthur Bell, appeared uncomfortable.
"Daniel, this is not disciplinary."
"Then why are there eleven directors on the call?"
Arthur sighed.
"Because allegations involving family trusts and company records can affect governance."
Daniel looked at the screen.
"The allegation is that someone stole from my daughter's account."
One director, Harold Crane, cleared his throat.
"There are also reports that you are accusing Victor of criminal misconduct."
"I haven't made a public accusation against anyone."
"Have you made one privately?"
Daniel stared at him.
"My private conversations with law enforcement are not board business."
Harold leaned back.
"They become board business if they involve the company founder."
Daniel almost ended the call.
Then Rebecca touched his arm off camera.
Stay calm.
Daniel breathed slowly.
"If company records were used to hide a crime, then I would think the board wants the truth more than it wants a comfortable meeting."
No one answered.
The chairman finally spoke.
"We are placing certain financial systems under independent review."
"Good."
"And until that review is complete, we are asking you to temporarily step away from authorization authority."
Daniel stared at the screen.
"You're suspending me."
"Temporarily."
"On whose motion?"
Arthur looked down.
Daniel knew the answer before he said it.
"Victor's."
Arthur did not deny it.
Daniel closed the laptop after the meeting.
He expected to feel rage.
Instead, he felt clarity.
Victor was afraid.
A man who felt safe did not mobilize a board within hours of a private investigation.
Rebecca seemed to reach the same conclusion.
"He's trying to cut off your access to company archives."
Daniel nodded.
"Which means something in those archives matters."
They called Aaron.
He suggested searching historical vendor records for a code Emma had mentioned repeatedly.
BR-17.
Daniel remembered nothing about it.
Rebecca accessed a legal backup she was authorized to review.
The code appeared beside seventeen old vendor entities connected to the Thomas Rowan case.
Most no longer existed.
One still did.
Northstar Advisory Group.
The same company receiving money from Lily's account.
Daniel stared at the screen.
"They reused the old channel."
Rebecca nodded.
"Or it never stopped."
A knock sounded at the back door.
Daniel stood quickly.
Mark was outside.
He looked shaken.
Daniel let him in.
"What happened?"
Mark held up an old digital camera.
"I found this in my garage."
"What is it?"
"The camera I used before I switched to my phone."
Mark set it on the table.
"Remember when I told you I saw Victor here with Claire?"
"Yes."
"I took pictures that day."
Daniel stared at him.
"Why didn't you remember that?"
"I thought I deleted them."
Mark had found the memory card while looking for a charger.
He inserted it into Daniel's laptop.
The photographs appeared one by one.
Claire standing near the maple tree.
Victor beside her.
Claire holding a folded document.
Victor pointing toward Emma's office window.
Then another man stepped into the frame.
Daniel leaned closer.
"Leonard Shaw."
Mark nodded.
The next photograph showed all three speaking.
The image after that showed Leonard handing Claire an envelope.
The final photograph caught the envelope partly open.
A check was visible inside.
Rebecca enlarged the image.
The issuing bank and partial account number could be read.
She typed the digits into her notes.
Then she went completely still.
"Daniel."
"What?"
"I know this account."
"Whose is it?"
Rebecca looked at him.
May you like
"It belonged to Emma."
