Chapter 10 - I MARRIED YOU FOR THE LEDGER

Daniel spent the next hour trying to explain the initials C.R. without making the obvious conclusion.
Maybe they belonged to someone else.
Maybe the ledger code did not represent a person.
Maybe Emma had misunderstood an entry.
Hernandez refused to speculate.
Rebecca searched old vendor directories and corporate records for other names matching the initials.
She found three possibilities.
None had any connection to Northstar Advisory Group.
Claire did.
By noon, police had confirmed that Rowan Family Consulting received its first payment from a Northstar-linked account six months before Emma died.
The amount was twenty-five thousand dollars.
Daniel stared at the transaction.
"She was already being paid."
Rebecca nodded.
"The question is for what."
Hernandez received the answer sooner than anyone expected.
Claire's attorney requested a formal interview.
Claire was willing to speak if prosecutors agreed not to use her statement as the sole basis for immediate detention while negotiations continued.
Hernandez explained that no immunity had been offered.
Claire would still face consequences for whatever evidence established.
She simply wanted to talk.
Daniel was not permitted in the interview room.
He watched from a secure monitor with Rebecca and another detective.
Claire entered wearing the same controlled expression Daniel had once mistaken for strength.
Melissa Grant sat beside her.
Hernandez placed a recorder on the table.
"State your full legal name."
Claire looked at him.
"Claire Elise Rowan."
Daniel felt something twist in his chest.
Not Bennett.
Not Mercer.
Rowan.
Hernandez began with the twenty-five-thousand-dollar transfer.
Claire did not deny receiving it.
"Leonard Shaw paid me."
"For what?"
"Information."
"About whom?"
Claire looked toward the one-way glass.
Daniel wondered whether she knew he was behind it.
"Emma Mercer."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Hernandez kept his voice neutral.
"What information?"
"Her schedule."
"Why?"
"Leonard told me Emma was moving money that belonged to my father."
"Did you believe him?"
"Yes."
"Did you follow Emma?"
"Sometimes."
"Did you enter her property?"
Claire hesitated.
Melissa touched her arm.
Claire continued anyway.
"Once."
Daniel's jaw clenched.
"When?"
"Before she died."
"How did you enter?"
"Victor gave me a code."
Hernandez leaned forward.
"Victor Mercer was already helping you before Emma died?"
Claire's eyes hardened.
"Helping is not the word I would use."
"What word would you use?"
"Using."
Claire explained that Victor contacted her after Leonard introduced them.
Victor told her Thomas had stolen company money but claimed Emma had manipulated the evidence to hide funds she wanted for Lily.
Claire did not know which man to trust.
Both gave her pieces of records.
Both told her the other side was dangerous.
"What did Victor want from you?"
"To find out what Emma knew."
"And Leonard?"
"The same thing."
"Did either tell you to hurt Emma?"
Claire looked down.
"No."
"Did you tamper with Emma's vehicle?"
Her head snapped up.
"No."
"Did you know anyone else had?"
"Not until after she died."
Daniel leaned closer to the monitor.
Hernandez asked the next question.
"How did you know after?"
Claire's face changed.
"Leonard got drunk."
"When?"
"About a month after the funeral."
"What did he say?"
"He said Emma should have stopped when she had the chance."
"Anything else?"
Claire swallowed.
"He said cars are complicated machines and mistakes happen every day."
Daniel stood so quickly that Rebecca grabbed his arm.
"Sit down."
"He admitted it."
"Not clearly enough."
Daniel hated the law's appetite for precision.
Hernandez moved on.
"When did you first meet Daniel Mercer?"
Claire looked toward the glass again.
"At a company event."
"Was that meeting accidental?"
A long silence followed.
Daniel already knew the answer.
Claire finally said it.
"No."
He felt the words even though he expected them.
Hernandez asked why she approached Daniel.
Claire's voice became quieter.
"Because I believed Emma hid the ledger somewhere Daniel could access."
"So you built a relationship with him to search his home?"
"At first."
"What does at first mean?"
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
Daniel felt no sympathy.
"I didn't expect to care about him."
He turned away from the screen.
Rebecca said nothing.
Claire continued.
"Daniel was kind to me."
"Did you tell him who you were?"
"No."
"Why?"
"Because I knew he would never trust me if he knew my father was Thomas Rowan."
"Did you marry Daniel to gain access to his house?"
Claire's answer took several seconds.
"Yes."
Daniel stared at the wall.
There it was.
Nine months of marriage reduced to a strategy.
Hernandez asked about Lily.
Claire's tears disappeared.
"Lily knew where Emma hid things."
"How did you know?"
"Victor told me Emma used the child as a hiding place."
Daniel's anger surged.
"What did you do to make Lily tell you?"
Claire looked down.
"I asked questions."
"We have video of more than questions."
"I never seriously injured her."
Behind the glass, Daniel whispered.
"There it is again."
The same defense.
Not love.
Not innocence.
Only a line Claire believed she had not crossed.
Hernandez placed still images from Mark's recording on the table.
"You isolated her, threatened her, and repeatedly told her she could lose her father."
Claire's eyes shifted.
"I was desperate."
"For money?"
"For proof my father wasn't a criminal."
"Then why transfer money from Lily's account?"
Claire leaned forward.
"Because that money belonged to my family."
Hernandez placed Emma's unsent letter in front of her.
Claire stared at the first line.
Her face emptied.
"What is this?"
"A letter Emma wrote to you."
Claire read silently.
Her hands began to shake.
"No."
"The forensic copy came from a device Emma hid before her death."
Claire kept reading.
Tears appeared again, but this time her expression looked different.
Confused.
"She said my father was innocent."
"Yes."
"She said Leonard framed him."
"That's what she believed."
Claire looked up.
"Victor told me Emma blamed Thomas."
"Victor lied."
Claire stared at the paper.
"Leonard showed me transfer records."
"Incomplete records."
"He said Emma moved the money into Lily's trust."
"She preserved recovered funds for court review."
Claire's breathing changed.
For the first time, Daniel saw the revenge story she had lived inside begin to collapse.
Then Hernandez asked the question that mattered most.
"Why did Nicole Rowan try to remove Lily from school yesterday?"
Claire looked up sharply.
"She what?"
Hernandez watched her.
"Don't perform for me."
"I'm not."
"Nicole used a forged authorization."
Claire turned toward Melissa.
"I didn't tell her to do that."
"Who did?"
Claire looked back at Hernandez.
"Leonard."
Daniel's body went still.
"How do you know?"
"Because he told us months ago that if Daniel discovered the account transfers, Lily might have to be moved before Daniel could lock everything down."
Hernandez's eyes narrowed.
"Moved where?"
"Victor's lake house."
"For what purpose?"
Claire swallowed.
"To make Daniel negotiate."
Daniel struck the wall with his palm.
Rebecca grabbed his wrist.
"Do not go in there."
Claire continued.
"I told Leonard I wouldn't help with that."
"But your sister did."
"Nicole still believes Leonard saved our family."
"Did Victor know about the plan?"
Claire looked away.
"Yes."
Hernandez paused.
"Did Victor approve it?"
"He said Daniel needed to be reminded who controlled the family."
Daniel felt physically sick.
The interview continued for another hour.
Claire admitted entering Daniel's home before they were married.
She admitted searching Emma's office.
She admitted burying Emma's phone after Victor ordered her to remove it from the house because they could not unlock it.
She admitted forging Daniel's signature on one account authorization.
She denied forging the trust amendment.
"Who did?"
"Leonard prepared it."
"And Victor witnessed it?"
"Yes."
"Did Daniel sign it?"
"No."
Daniel stared through the glass.
Every answer damaged her and exposed someone above her.
When Hernandez asked whether she had ever physically restrained Lily, Claire requested a break and consulted with her attorney.
After ten minutes, Melissa ended the interview.
Daniel left the observation room before Claire could walk past him.
He stood in the parking garage trying to breathe.
Rebecca joined him.
"You okay?"
"No."
"Fair answer."
Daniel looked at her.
"She married me for access."
Rebecca nodded.
"And then she chose every day afterward to keep lying."
"Emma tried to tell her the truth."
"Claire still made her own choices."
Daniel stared toward the street.
"I keep thinking there had to be a moment when she could have stopped."
"There were thousands."
That afternoon, police placed Claire under arrest on fraud-related charges tied to the forged authorization and unauthorized transfers.
Additional child-endangerment charges remained under review.
Daniel felt no satisfaction.
He only felt tired.
Then, just before midnight, Hernandez called again.
"We have a problem."
Daniel sat up in the guesthouse bedroom.
"What?"
"Claire was transferred to the county detention facility."
"Okay."
"During intake, she asked to speak to me privately."
"About what?"
"She says Leonard has a second copy of Emma's ledger."
Daniel stood.
"Where?"
"She doesn't know."
"Then what's the problem?"
Hernandez paused.
"She also says Leonard has been building a file on you for more than a year."
Daniel felt cold.
"What kind of file?"
"Medical records, financial mistakes, photographs of you drinking at events, prescriptions, anything that could be used to argue you're unstable."
"Why?"
Hernandez's next sentence answered the question Daniel had been afraid to ask.
"Because the plan was never only to find Emma's ledger."
"Then what was the plan?"
May you like
"If they couldn't find it, they planned to take legal control of Lily and her trust instead."
