Chapter 15 - PHASE FIVE

Claire's description of Phase Five arrived in fragments because even she claimed she never saw the complete document.

Leonard compartmentalized plans.

Victor saw financial pieces.

Claire saw household pieces.

Nicole handled documents and logistics.

No one except Leonard held the whole map.

That was how he kept everyone useful and everyone afraid.

According to Claire, Phase Five was supposed to begin after Daniel lost temporary control of Lily's trust.

A public incident would portray Daniel as unstable.

Claire would petition for separation.

Victor would support her request for temporary guardianship of Lily.

Leonard would produce the forged trust amendment and a packet of staged evidence.

The board would suspend Daniel from company authority.

With Daniel isolated, the group could search every remaining property connected to Emma without interference.

If the ledger still could not be found, they would control the assets it protected.

Daniel listened to Hernandez explain the plan and felt as though someone had written a theft manual using his life as the paper.

"What was the public incident?"

"Claire says Leonard never told her."

"Do you believe that?"

"Not completely."

Daniel looked toward Rebecca.

"What could make me look unstable quickly?"

Rebecca thought for a moment.

"An arrest."

"For what?"

"Domestic violence."

Daniel's stomach turned.

He remembered the arguments Claire provoked.

He remembered how she sometimes stood close to him while holding her phone facedown on a counter.

He remembered apologizing for raising his voice even when he could not understand how the conversation escalated.

"She was trying to get me on tape."

"Likely."

"What if I never touched her?"

Rebecca's expression was grim.

"A staged injury combined with edited audio can still create a crisis."

Daniel thought of the bottle placed beside him while he slept.

They had already practiced creating scenes that did not happen.

Hernandez added another fact.

Technicians recovered a draft statement from Claire's hidden phone.

It was written in first person.

MY HUSBAND HAS BECOME INCREASINGLY VOLATILE SINCE OUR MARRIAGE.

Daniel felt anger rise.

The statement described yelling, heavy drinking, reckless behavior, and fear for Lily's safety.

None of it matched reality.

The final paragraph said Claire intended to seek emergency protection for herself and Lily.

The document was created six weeks before Mark recorded the backyard.

"She was preparing to accuse me while she was hurting Lily."

Hernandez nodded.

"Yes."

Daniel turned away.

"I don't want to hear her say she cared about us ever again."

Rebecca said nothing.

There was nothing useful to say.

The prosecutor moved quickly after the forensic interview with Lily and Claire's new admissions.

Claire remained in custody.

Nicole was charged with attempted custodial interference, forgery-related offenses, and conspiracy counts tied to the trust documents.

Victor was ordered to surrender his passport while investigators pursued additional charges.

Leonard fought every request through motions and privilege claims.

Then he made a mistake.

He tried to leave.

At 5:18 a.m. Friday, federal agents stopped Leonard at a private aviation terminal thirty miles outside the city.

He was carrying two passports.

One was legitimate.

The second had his photograph under the name Lawrence Shea.

A laptop and encrypted external drive were found in his bag.

Victor was not with him.

Daniel learned about the detention from Hernandez while making cereal for Lily.

"Where was he going?"

"The filed flight plan listed Nassau."

"The original booking was Cayman."

"He changed it last night."

Daniel looked at Lily, who was arranging blueberries in a smiley face.

"He knew."

"He knew enough."

"Did he say where Victor is?"

"He hasn't said anything."

Victor's phone was turned off.

His house was empty when officers arrived.

Caleb Dunn claimed not to know where he had gone.

Daniel's first fear was Lily.

Police increased security around the guesthouse and school.

Daniel did not tell Lily her grandfather was missing.

She already carried too many adult dangers.

At noon, Rebecca received a call from Mercer Industrial.

Victor had accessed a private company hangar at 3:40 a.m.

No company aircraft had departed.

A maintenance employee saw him enter a storage office and leave twenty minutes later carrying a metal case.

The office contained historical corporate archives not yet transferred to digital storage.

Daniel knew what Victor had taken.

"Records."

Rebecca nodded.

"Probably."

"Where would he go?"

Daniel thought about every property Victor owned.

City condominium.

Lake house.

Hunting cabin.

Florida apartment.

Then Lily walked into the room carrying her rabbit.

"Daddy, Grandpa has another house."

Daniel turned.

"What do you mean?"

"The one with the red barn."

Daniel frowned.

"What red barn?"

"Where Claire and Grandpa took me."

The room went silent.

Daniel crouched.

"When did they take you there?"

"When you were in Germany."

Rebecca immediately reached for her phone.

"Where was it?"

Lily thought.

"There were cows."

"Anything else?"

"A big water tower with a blue star."

Daniel knew the region.

His grandfather had once owned farmland near a town with a star painted on its municipal water tower.

Victor sold most of the land twenty years earlier.

Or Daniel thought he had.

County records showed a forty-acre parcel still held by an old Mercer family LLC.

Police reached the property within an hour.

Victor's car was parked inside the barn.

He was found in a farmhouse office burning documents in a metal fireplace.

Officers extinguished the fire and recovered partially damaged pages.

Victor was taken into custody for obstruction-related investigation while prosecutors reviewed additional charges.

The metal case from the company hangar sat open on the desk.

Inside were old ledgers.

One had Thomas Rowan's name written on the spine.

Daniel learned this while sitting beside Lily on the guesthouse porch.

He did not celebrate.

His father had just been taken away by police.

Whatever Victor had become, some part of Daniel still remembered riding on his shoulders at a county fair.

Betrayal did not erase childhood before it replaced it.

That evening, Hernandez called again.

The encrypted drive seized from Leonard had been partially unlocked using a recovery key obtained from Northstar's service provider.

The first accessible folder was labeled E.M.

Daniel's pulse quickened.

"Emma Mercer?"

"We believe so."

The folder contained surveillance photographs, copies of emails, dealership records, and notes about Emma's movements.

One document was titled CORRECTIVE EVENT.

Daniel's stomach turned.

"What does it say?"

"It describes creating a mechanical failure serious enough to frighten Emma but not intended to cause a fatal crash."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"The first warning."

"Yes."

"And the crash?"

Hernandez paused.

"There's a second document."

"Read it."

"It's titled FINAL CONTAINMENT."

Daniel gripped the phone.

"What does it say?"

"Not enough yet."

"Hernandez."

"Daniel, the file is damaged."

The detective continued carefully.

"But one surviving line authorizes a payment to someone identified as D.F."

"Who is D.F.?"

"We're working on that."

The surviving payment amount was fifty thousand dollars.

The date was two days before Emma's crash.

Another line referenced ROUTE CONFIRMATION FROM C.R.

Daniel felt a cold emptiness inside him.

Claire Rowan.

Emma's final route had been confirmed through Claire.

Then Hernandez gave him one more recovered sentence.

DO NOT INVOLVE V.M. UNTIL AFTER COMPLETION.

Daniel stared into the dark yard.

Victor had been part of the cover-up.

But if the document was genuine, Leonard had escalated the plan without telling him.

That did not make Victor innocent.

It made the conspiracy uglier.

Everyone had crossed different lines at different times.

And every one of them had left Lily standing in the middle.
