Chapter 5 - THE ACCIDENT THAT WASN'T SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN

Daniel did not sit down for the rest of the call.

He stood in Emma's old office with the photograph of Thomas Rowan in one hand and the phone pressed against his ear.

"Say that again."

Aaron Pike's voice remained careful.

"Emma hired me because she believed someone was interfering with her car."

Daniel looked toward the dark window.

"Interfering how?"

"She noticed the driver's seat had been moved on days when no one else should have had access to it."

Daniel's stomach tightened.

"That could have been valet service."

"She thought so at first."

Aaron paused.

"Then a mechanic found a cut in the brake sensor wiring."

Daniel gripped the edge of the desk.

"Why wasn't that in the accident report?"

"Because that inspection happened before the crash."

"What?"

"Emma had the wiring repaired eleven days before she died."

Daniel stared at nothing.

The official report said Emma lost control on a rain-slick road when another vehicle changed lanes.

Her SUV hit a concrete divider and rolled twice.

There had been no sign of mechanical failure after the crash.

Daniel had accepted that because grief left him with no strength to investigate anything beyond the police conclusion.

Aaron continued.

"After the first incident, Emma asked me to check whether anyone had been following her."

"Were they?"

"Yes."

"Who?"

"That's the problem."

Daniel waited.

"The man I identified was working for a private security company used by Mercer Industrial."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Who authorized him?"

"The records were routed through an executive account."

"Whose?"

Aaron hesitated.

"Victor Mercer's."

The room felt smaller.

Daniel walked to the office door and checked that Lily was still asleep upstairs.

"Why didn't you go to the police?"

"Emma asked me not to."

"Why?"

"She said she needed proof of the financial scheme first."

Daniel's anger rose.

"She thought someone was trying to hurt her, and she kept working?"

"She thought exposing the scheme was the only way to stop whoever was behind it."

That also sounded like Emma.

She had been kind, but once she believed something was wrong, she became almost impossible to intimidate.

"Did she ever mention Thomas Rowan?"

"Every time we spoke."

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

"He died in prison."

"He did."

"Then how is there a picture of Emma with him three months before his death?"

"Because she visited him."

Daniel shook his head.

"His records said he was in a federal facility four states away."

"He was temporarily transferred to testify in a sealed proceeding."

"About what?"

"Your company."

Daniel's pulse increased.

Aaron continued.

"Thomas claimed he had been ordered to route money through fake vendors and then blamed when an audit found the transfers."

"Ordered by whom?"

"He wouldn't say on the phone."

"Did he tell Emma?"

"Yes."

Daniel's voice became quiet.

"Victor."

Aaron did not answer directly.

"Emma believed Thomas."

That was enough.

Daniel sat in the desk chair again.

"Why are you calling me now?"

"Because someone tried to get into my storage unit tonight."

Daniel straightened.

"What do you keep there?"

"Copies of the material Emma gave me."

"Where are you?"

"Not at home."

"Tell me where you are."

"I don't know you well enough to do that yet."

Daniel almost shouted.

"My daughter was being terrorized in my backyard today."

Aaron was silent.

Daniel forced himself to lower his voice.

"My current wife is Thomas Rowan's daughter, and I didn't know her real name until a few hours ago."

Aaron inhaled sharply.

"Claire?"

Daniel froze.

"You know her?"

Aaron said nothing.

"Aaron."

"Emma showed me a photograph of Thomas's family."

"So you knew Claire existed."

"Yes."

"Did Emma know her personally?"

"Not then."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What does that mean?"

"Emma learned someone from the Rowan family had started contacting people connected to the old case."

"Claire."

"Probably."

"Did Emma ever meet her?"

"I don't know."

Daniel remembered Lily saying Claire blamed Emma for taking her family away.

"Claire thinks Emma destroyed Thomas."

Aaron's voice hardened.

"Then Claire has been lied to."

"By whom?"

"That's what Emma was trying to prove."

A floorboard creaked in the hallway.

Daniel turned sharply.

Lily stood in the doorway wearing pajamas and holding her stuffed rabbit.

"Daddy?"

Daniel softened immediately.

"I thought you were asleep."

"I had a bad dream."

He covered the phone microphone.

"Come here."

Lily crossed the room and climbed into his lap.

Daniel held her with one arm.

Aaron spoke again.

"Is that Lily?"

Daniel looked down at his daughter.

"Yes."

Aaron's tone changed.

"Emma talked about her constantly."

Daniel swallowed.

"Then help me finish what Emma started."

Aaron was silent for several seconds.

"Tomorrow morning, nine o'clock."

"Where?"

"I'll send you a location thirty minutes before."

"I'm bringing my attorney."

"Fine."

"And a detective."

Aaron hesitated.

"One detective."

"Agreed."

The call ended.

Lily rested her head against Daniel's chest.

"Were you talking about Mommy?"

"Yes."

"Is Mommy in trouble?"

Daniel's throat tightened.

"No, sweetheart."

"Claire says Mommy was a bad lady."

Daniel looked at her.

"Claire was wrong."

Lily studied his face.

"Grandpa says Mommy made people lose money."

Daniel felt another piece fall into place.

"When did Grandpa tell you that?"

"At his house."

"Was Claire there?"

Lily nodded.

"They were talking in the kitchen."

"Did they know you could hear them?"

"No."

Daniel held her tighter.

"What else did you hear?"

Lily frowned.

"Grandpa said the bird was still missing."

Daniel's eyes closed.

"Anything else?"

"Claire said she would make me remember."

Daniel felt cold all over.

He carried Lily upstairs and stayed beside her until she slept again.

At dawn, he called Detective Hernandez and told him about Aaron Pike.

Hernandez had already received preliminary information from the forensic team.

Emma's buried phone could still be powered after a battery replacement.

The device was encrypted.

A technician was attempting to preserve the data without triggering any lockout protections.

Hernandez also had news about Claire.

She had been released after questioning because the child-endangerment investigation was still being reviewed by the prosecutor.

A temporary protection order barred her from Daniel's property and from contacting Lily.

Daniel hated knowing Claire was free.

"Where did she go?"

"Her attorney says she's staying at a hotel."

"Which hotel?"

"I can't give you a location unless it becomes relevant to the investigation."

Daniel understood the rule but did not like it.

Rebecca arrived at seven thirty with coffee and three new folders.

She had spent half the night tracing Rowan Family Consulting.

The company had no employees, no office, and no visible clients.

It existed almost entirely to receive transfers.

Money from Lily's custodial account had been moved into Rowan Family Consulting and then sent to another entity called Northstar Advisory Group.

Daniel stared at the name.

"Who owns Northstar?"

"The ownership is hidden behind a trust company in Delaware."

"Can you get through it?"

"Eventually."

Rebecca slid another page across the table.

"But I found something worse."

The document was a copy of a beneficiary authorization form.

It appeared to grant Claire limited power to manage Lily's education funds.

Daniel's signature appeared at the bottom.

He stared at it.

"I never signed this."

"I know."

"How do you know?"

"Because the signature was dated March fourteenth."

Daniel looked up.

Rebecca continued.

"You were in Germany that week."

"Claire had access to my office."

"And apparently access to a copy of your signature."

Daniel stood and paced.

"Freeze everything."

"I already sent emergency notices to the bank."

"Can she move anything else?"

"Not without triggering a block."

Daniel stopped.

"What about Lily's trust?"

Rebecca hesitated.

That hesitation was enough to frighten him.

"What?"

"The custodial account is only one piece."

"I know."

Emma had created a separate trust for Lily funded with life insurance, inherited shares, and property interests.

Daniel had intentionally avoided touching it.

"Someone filed an amendment six months ago."

"What amendment?"

Rebecca opened the final folder.

"It adds a successor family manager if you become incapacitated or legally disqualified."

Daniel read the first page.

The named successor was Claire Mercer.

His own signature appeared again.

"I didn't sign this either."

Rebecca nodded grimly.

"There's more."

"How could there possibly be more?"

She pointed to the witness section.

The signature belonged to Victor Mercer.

Daniel stared at his father's name.

At eight thirty, Aaron sent the meeting location.

An old diner near the county courthouse.

Daniel left Lily with Rebecca's sister, a retired teacher he had known for years, while Rebecca accompanied him.

Detective Hernandez followed separately.

Aaron Pike was already in a back booth when they arrived.

He was in his late fifties with silver hair and the exhausted eyes of a man who had spent too much time looking over his shoulder.

A canvas messenger bag sat on the seat beside him.

He did not shake Daniel's hand.

"Before I give you anything, I need to know one thing."

Daniel sat across from him.

"Ask."

Aaron looked directly into his eyes.

"Did Victor Mercer have access to Emma's vehicle the week she died?"

Daniel thought back.

The answer arrived like a blow.

"Yes."

Rebecca stiffened.

Daniel continued.

"Emma's SUV was at the dealership for routine service."

"Who owned the dealership?"

Daniel already knew where the question was going.

"Mercer Automotive Holdings."

Aaron slowly opened the messenger bag.

He removed a photocopied service record.

A handwritten authorization code appeared beside a line labeled ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSTIC OVERRIDE.

Daniel recognized the code.

It had belonged to Victor's executive office.

Aaron looked at him.

"Emma found this two days before she died."

Daniel could not speak.

Aaron reached back into the bag.

"And that's not the reason I contacted you."

He placed a second document on the table.

It was a photograph taken by a traffic camera near Emma's accident site.

Emma's SUV was visible in the foreground.

A black sedan followed three car lengths behind.

Daniel recognized the license plate.

The sedan belonged to Mercer Industrial.

Aaron pointed to the driver's enlarged image.

"This man followed Emma for nine miles before the crash."

Daniel stared at the grainy face.

He knew the driver.

His name was Leonard Shaw.

Leonard was not a security employee.

May you like

He was Victor Mercer's personal attorney.
