Chapter 9 - The Lie Marcus Kept for Twelve Years

The intruder from the playroom carried no identification.

His fingerprints had been chemically damaged.

The syringe contained a fast-acting sedative strong enough to render an adult unconscious within minutes.

For a six-year-old, the dosage could have been catastrophic.

Adrian listened to the toxicology report without speaking.

Claire stood across his study, arms folded so tightly they hurt.

Lily had been examined by Dr. Reynolds and was physically fine apart from mild exposure to the cold.

Mrs. Callahan had a concussion but refused to leave the mansion.

"I've been hit harder by cabinet doors," she told the paramedic.

Nobody believed her.

Adrian ordered her to the hospital anyway.

For once, she did not argue.

Marcus placed a photograph of the dead intruder on the desk.

"Facial recognition got a partial match."

Adrian looked down.

"Name?"

"Caleb Voss."

The reaction was immediate.

Adrian's eyes lifted.

Marcus went pale.

Claire saw both.

"You know him."

Marcus did not answer.

Adrian looked at his chief of security.

"Voss."

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"Yes."

"As in Elias Voss?"

"Yes."

Claire looked between them.

"Who is Elias Voss?"

Marcus sat down heavily.

It was the first time Claire had ever seen him look old.

"A man I thought was dead."

Adrian's voice went flat.

"You thought?"

Marcus looked at him.

"I was told he was dead."

"By whom?"

Marcus did not answer.

Adrian's expression hardened.

"By Vincent."

Marcus nodded once.

Claire felt dread settle over the room.

"Start at the beginning."

Marcus rubbed one hand over his face.

"Twelve years ago, before Adrian took full control of the company, Vincent still controlled pieces of the old Mercer operation."

Claire listened.

"Elias Voss was his collector."

Adrian added, "He intimidated drivers, union men, vendors."

Marcus gave a humorless laugh.

"That's the polite version."

"What happened to him?" Claire asked.

Marcus looked at the dead man's photograph.

"Adrian ordered the old operations shut down."

"Vincent fought him."

"Elias was caught moving weapons through a Mercer warehouse."

Claire's stomach tightened.

Marcus continued.

"I was running security at the time."

"I brought the evidence to Adrian."

"Adrian turned it over to federal investigators."

Adrian's face remained cold.

"Elias disappeared before they could arrest him."

Claire asked, "And Vincent said he died?"

Marcus looked at her.

"Not exactly."

Silence stretched.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"Marcus."

Marcus looked down.

"I found him first."

The words changed the room.

Adrian stepped forward.

"What?"

Marcus met his gaze.

"Three nights after the warehouse search."

"Where?"

"Chelsea docks."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because he was bleeding and terrified."

Adrian laughed once, without humor.

"Elias Voss was many things."

"Terrified wasn't one of them."

"He was that night."

Marcus's voice lowered.

"He said Vincent had ordered two men killed because they wanted out."

Claire listened, barely breathing.

"Elias wanted immunity."

"He wanted me to take him to the FBI."

Adrian's eyes hardened.

"And?"

Marcus swallowed.

"Before I could move him, a car came down the pier."

"Elias panicked."

"He ran."

"Shots were fired."

"I found blood on the seawall."

"No body."

Adrian stared at him.

"You told me Vincent had Elias killed."

"I believed he had."

"You said you confirmed it."

Marcus looked away.

"I lied."

The word fell heavily.

Claire felt the years between the two men crack open.

Adrian did not raise his voice.

That made him more frightening.

"Why?"

Marcus answered slowly.

"Because the next morning Vincent came to me with photographs of my wife and son."

Claire went still.

She had never heard Marcus mention a family.

"He said if I kept looking for Elias, I would lose them."

Adrian's expression changed.

"You had a son?"

Marcus looked at him with exhausted grief.

"He was four."

"Was?"

Marcus closed his eyes.

"My wife left two weeks later."

"I helped her disappear."

"New names."

"New state."

"I haven't seen either of them in eleven years."

Claire's throat tightened.

Adrian stood completely still.

"You never told me."

"You were thirty."

"You were trying to clean up a family that did not want to be cleaned."

"Rebecca was pregnant."

"I thought if I made my problem yours, Vincent would put everyone in the same line of fire."

Adrian's voice sharpened.

"So you lied to me for twelve years."

"Yes."

"About a man connected to the person attacking my daughter."

"I didn't know Caleb existed."

"You didn't know because you buried the truth."

Marcus flinched.

Claire watched rage and betrayal move through Adrian.

Then Marcus said something worse.

"There's another lie."

Adrian stared at him.

"Of course there is."

Marcus reached into his jacket and removed a small envelope.

"Rebecca found me six months before she died."

Adrian's expression became unreadable.

"About what?"

"Elias."

"How did she know?"

"I never found out."

Marcus handed him the envelope.

"She made me promise not to give you this until Vincent resurfaced."

Adrian looked at the envelope but did not take it.

"You had something from my wife for a year and never gave it to me?"

Marcus's eyes filled with something close to shame.

"Yes."

Adrian knocked the envelope from his hand.

It slid across the desk.

Claire jumped.

Marcus did not move.

Adrian's voice dropped.

"Get out."

"Adrian."

"Get out."

"You need me."

"That does not mean I can look at you right now."

Marcus stood.

For a second, Claire thought he might argue.

Instead he nodded.

"Fair."

He walked toward the door.

Then Claire noticed something.

"Marcus."

He stopped.

"Caleb Voss got into this house wearing your security uniform."

Marcus turned.

"Yes."

"He knew the alarm response."

"Yes."

"He knew where the conservatory was."

Marcus's face hardened.

Claire continued.

"If Vincent had access to your old files, could he know the safe room procedures too?"

Adrian looked at Marcus.

Marcus was silent for too long.

"Could he?" Claire repeated.

"Yes."

Adrian's jaw flexed.

"Change everything."

Marcus nodded.

"Already started."

He left.

Adrian stared at the closed door.

Claire picked up Rebecca's envelope.

"Do you want me to leave too?"

"No."

The answer came immediately.

She looked at him.

"You don't even know what's in this."

"No."

"Then maybe you should read it alone."

Adrian shook his head.

"I have done enough things alone."

The admission surprised them both.

Claire set the envelope on the desk.

"Open it."

Adrian did.

Inside was a single page in Rebecca's handwriting.

Adrian,

If Vincent comes back, do not trust the first betrayal you find.

He survives by making good men ashamed of what they hid.

Marcus lied to you.

So did I.

But the most dangerous liar is still sitting at your table.

Adrian stopped reading.

Claire felt the meaning immediately.

Julian.

There was more.

If I am gone when you read this, ask Lily about the blue key.

She will not remember why it matters.

That is intentional.

Do not force her.

Let the song bring it back.

Adrian's hands trembled.

Claire had never seen that before.

At the bottom Rebecca had written one final sentence.

And Adrian, if Claire Bennett is in your house, Thomas succeeded after all.

Claire forgot how to breathe.

Adrian read the line again.

Then looked at her.

"She knew your full name."

Claire backed away.

"You said she didn't know me."

"I thought she didn't."

"Evelyn said she didn't know me personally."

"Then someone is still withholding something."

Claire felt suddenly trapped between dead people who seemed to know more about her life than she did.

"What does it mean, Thomas succeeded?"

Adrian shook his head.

"I don't know."

A knock sounded.

Rachel Sloan entered without waiting.

She looked furious.

"We have another problem."

Adrian gave a bitter laugh.

"Get in line."

Rachel put a legal document on his desk.

"Vincent filed an emergency petition in family court."

Claire stared at her.

"For what?"

Rachel looked at Adrian.

"Temporary guardianship of Lily."

Adrian went silent.

Rachel continued.

"He claims Adrian's home is under armed attack, the primary caregiver is under investigation, and Adrian's judgment has been compromised by a personal relationship with that caregiver."

Claire's face burned.

"What personal relationship?"

Rachel's gaze shifted to her.

"The petition includes a photograph of Adrian holding your hand while you slept with Lily."

The room went completely still.

Claire whispered, "That happened inside Lily's bedroom."

Rachel nodded.

"Which means whoever is feeding Vincent information wasn't just inside the house today."

May you like

She looked toward the ceiling.

"They were inside that room yesterday morning."
