Chapter 12 - The Blue Door

The woman posing as Dr. Nora Bell reached into her coat.
Claire moved before she saw what was coming out.
She pulled Lily behind her and drove the heavy library chair sideways with both hands.
The chair struck the woman's knees.
She stumbled.
A compact pistol slipped from beneath her coat and hit the carpet.
Claire kicked it under the sofa.
The woman recovered faster than Claire expected.
She seized Claire by the hair and slammed her shoulder into the edge of the desk.
Pain exploded down Claire's arm.
Lily screamed.
"Run to the fireplace!"
The child obeyed instantly.
The woman grabbed for Claire again.
Claire caught her wrist.
Up close, the resemblance was disturbing.
Brown wig.
Contact lenses.
Makeup that altered the shape of her cheekbones.
Not enough to become Claire under direct light.
Enough to become her on a grainy camera.
Claire's anger burned through the fear.
"You bought the phone."
The woman smiled.
"You photograph well."
Claire twisted her wrist.
The woman drove an elbow into Claire's ribs.
Claire lost her grip.
Then the library door crashed inward.
Marcus entered first.
Two guards followed.
The woman turned toward the hidden pistol.
Marcus raised his weapon.
"Don't."
She stopped.
For one terrible second, Claire thought she might bite down on poison like Caleb Voss.
Marcus seemed to think the same thing.
He crossed the room in three steps and caught her jaw before she could move.
A guard pinned her arms.
Marcus removed a small capsule from beneath her tongue.
"Not this time."
The woman's eyes filled with hatred.
Adrian's voice came through Claire's phone, still lying on the desk.
"Claire."
She grabbed it.
"We're okay."
His breath came through the speaker.
He did not speak for a moment.
"Lily?"
"Scared."
"Injured?"
Claire looked at the girl crouched beside the fireplace.
"No."
Adrian exhaled.
"I'm five minutes out."
He made it in four.
When he entered the library, Lily ran to him so hard he nearly lost his balance.
Adrian dropped to his knees and wrapped both arms around her.
Claire looked away.
The tenderness of the moment felt too private.
Then Adrian stood with Lily still against his chest and looked at Claire.
His eyes moved to the red mark on her shoulder.
"You're hurt."
"Bruised."
"Doctor."
"Later."
"Now."
Claire almost argued out of habit.
Then she saw how close his fear was to becoming anger.
"Fine."
Marcus brought the impostor into the study once police arrived.
Her fingerprints identified her as Mara Voss.
Caleb Voss's older sister.
Elias Voss's daughter.
She had trained as a psychiatric nurse and had worked under three different names over the past decade.
Most recently, she had been employed by a private hospice company.
Claire stared at the employment record.
"Hospice."
Adrian heard the word differently.
"Which hospice?"
Marcus turned the laptop.
"Beacon Home Care."
Adrian's face changed.
"Rebecca used them."
Silence filled the room.
Claire felt cold.
"Was Mara one of her nurses?"
Marcus scrolled.
"Not under this name."
"Check photographs."
They pulled archived staff images from the hospice contractor.
Claire watched Adrian go rigid.
A woman with blond hair and glasses appeared in a group picture from thirteen months earlier.
Her employee badge read MARA WEST.
Same eyes.
Same mouth.
Adrian whispered, "She was in this house."
Marcus nodded.
"For at least three months."
Adrian's hand closed into a fist.
"She handled Rebecca's medications."
No one answered.
The medical mystery surrounding Rebecca shifted from possibility to something darker.
Rachel arrived before police transported Mara.
She spoke with detectives and secured copies of the arrest documents for the guardianship hearing.
Then she confronted Mara in the hallway.
"Vincent Mercer sent you?"
Mara smiled.
"I don't know Vincent Mercer."
Rachel did not react.
"Julian Cross?"
"Never met him."
Claire stepped forward.
"My father?"
Mara's smile disappeared.
Adrian noticed.
Claire noticed too.
"You know Thomas Bennett."
Mara looked at her for the first time with something other than contempt.
"I know what he cost my family."
Claire's heart pounded.
"What did he cost you?"
"Everything."
"My father died."
"So did mine."
Marcus stepped closer.
"Elias isn't dead."
Mara's expression changed.
It was tiny.
Enough.
Marcus whispered, "You know he's alive."
Mara looked away.
Adrian spoke.
"Where is he?"
She laughed.
"You still think you're asking the questions."
The detectives took her away.
Two hours later, Rachel received a call from DCF.
Mara's arrest changed the child safety assessment substantially.
Claire's restrictions were lifted pending final review.
Lily hugged her so tightly that Claire had to sit down.
"You can stay in my room again?"
Claire looked at Adrian.
He answered for her.
"If Claire wants to."
The shift mattered.
Claire heard it.
So did he.
"I want to."
Lily smiled for the first time all day.
Later, after she fell asleep, Claire returned to the drawing she had made during the fake therapy session.
A blond Rebecca stood beside a blue door.
Uncle Julian's house.
Claire carried the picture to Adrian.
"We need to go there."
"Julian's house?"
"Lily remembered Rebecca yelling at him."
Adrian studied the drawing.
"He will know we're coming."
"Maybe."
"And if he destroyed whatever was there?"
Claire pointed at the blue door.
"Then why would Rebecca give Lily a blue key?"
Adrian looked at her.
By midnight, Rachel had obtained enough probable cause through the forged payment and Mara's connection to the household to persuade detectives to interview Julian and preserve evidence at his home.
Julian was not there.
His attorney claimed he was traveling.
His phone was off.
The mansion in Weston stood mostly dark when police entered with a warrant just after 2:00 a.m.
Adrian and Claire waited outside until detectives called them in to identify items connected to Rebecca.
The house was immaculate.
Too immaculate.
The office contained no personal papers.
The computers had been removed.
The basement storage room had been cleared.
Claire felt disappointment growing.
Then Lily's drawing came back to her.
"Blue door."
The detective looked at her.
"We checked every door."
"Were any blue?"
"No."
Claire looked around.
Rebecca had not hidden a blue key so a six-year-old could remember a color with no meaning.
"Maybe it's not a room door."
They searched again.
In the garage, behind a row of locked cabinets, Claire found a small blue-painted steel panel built into the wall.
B-27 was stamped near the lock.
The key fit.
Inside was a narrow compartment containing a hard drive and a paper file.
Adrian opened the file first.
Medical supply invoices.
Beacon Home Care.
Mara West appeared on several staff schedules.
The invoices showed sedatives ordered under Rebecca's patient code that never appeared in her official medical chart.
Claire felt sick.
"Julian ordered these?"
Adrian turned to the signature page.
No.
The authorization belonged to Dr. Malcolm Vale.
Rebecca's oncologist.
The hard drive contained video clips.
One showed Rebecca standing in Julian's home office.
Lily, three years old, played in the corner.
Julian faced Rebecca across his desk.
The audio was clear.
"You changed the schedule," Rebecca said.
Julian replied, "I changed nothing."
"You moved Mara into my home rotation."
"The agency did."
"Stop lying to me."
Julian's expression hardened.
"Adrian will never believe you if you keep acting like this."
Rebecca stepped closer.
"Because I'm sick?"
"Because you're frightened."
"I found the account."
Julian went still.
"What account?"
Rebecca smiled sadly.
"That's the first honest reaction you've had all night."
The video ended.
Claire looked at Adrian.
"What account?"
He shook his head.
The next clip began automatically.
This time Julian was alone.
He sat at the desk making a phone call.
"She knows about North Harbor."
Claire's breath caught.
North Harbor Consulting was the shell company that had transferred five thousand dollars into her account.
Julian continued.
"No, she doesn't know the whole structure."
A pause.
"Vincent, listen to me."
Adrian's face turned to stone.
"If Adrian finds out before Rebecca is gone, we lose everything."
The call ended.
Claire covered her mouth.
Rebecca had been dying.
Julian and Vincent had not merely known.
They had been waiting for it.
Then the hard drive opened one final file.
A hospital corridor appeared.
The timestamp was three days before Rebecca's death.
Dr. Malcolm Vale stood near an elevator.
Mara Voss approached him.
She handed him an envelope.
He opened it.
Inside was cash.
Adrian turned away from the screen.
Claire whispered, "They paid her doctor."
Marcus's voice came from the doorway.
"Or they paid him for something."
Adrian looked back.
"Find Vale."
Marcus's face was grim.
"We already tried."
May you like
"And?"
"His wife reported him missing four hours ago."
