Chapter 13 - The Doctor Who Changed the Chart

Dr. Malcolm Vale's car was found at Logan Airport.
His passport had not been used.
Security footage showed him parking at 6:42 p.m., entering the terminal with one carry-on bag, and then walking out through a different exit thirteen minutes later.
A second camera captured him getting into a gray SUV.
The license plate belonged to a vehicle reported stolen two days earlier.
To Adrian, the sequence looked like flight.
To Claire, it looked like fear.
"He wanted people to think he boarded a plane."
Marcus paused the airport footage.
"Agreed."
Adrian stared at Vale's face.
"Then he knew someone was following him."
Rachel entered the study carrying coffee and a court file.
"The guardianship petition was denied."
Claire almost did not understand the sentence at first.
Rachel repeated it.
"Vincent is not getting Lily."
Adrian's shoulders dropped by less than an inch.
It was the closest thing to visible relief he allowed himself.
Claire sat down.
"What happened?"
"Mara's arrest destroyed the argument that you were the primary threat."
Rachel looked at Claire.
"And bank investigators confirmed the five-thousand-dollar transfer was initiated using Julian Cross's executive credentials."
Claire closed her eyes.
"So I'm cleared?"
"DCF is closing the abuse allegation as unsupported."
Claire exhaled so hard she almost laughed.
Then Rachel added, "But Vincent's attorney submitted a new filing."
Of course he had.
Claire looked up.
"What now?"
"He claims Adrian is obstructing Lily's relationship with extended family and using the attacks as an excuse to isolate her."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"He approached her in disguise at school."
"The judge agrees that was inappropriate."
"Inappropriate?"
Rachel held up a hand.
"The judge also issued a no-contact order."
That silenced him.
"Vincent cannot approach Lily, contact her school, or communicate through third parties."
Claire asked, "Will that stop him?"
Rachel looked at Adrian.
"Legally?"
"Yes."
"Practically?"
She did not answer.
The search for Dr. Vale became the next priority.
His office records revealed something disturbing.
Rebecca's official chart had been edited repeatedly during the last eight weeks of her life.
Medication entries were added after the dates on which the drugs were supposedly administered.
Nursing notes disappeared.
One lab result had been replaced entirely.
The user credentials belonged to Vale.
But the system logs showed the changes were made from two locations.
Vale's office.
And Mercer Holdings headquarters.
Claire stared at Marcus.
"Why would a hospital chart be accessed from Adrian's company?"
"Remote physician portal."
"Who had Vale's login?"
"That's the question."
Adrian had a better one.
"Which computer at Mercer Holdings?"
Marcus looked at the IP record.
"Executive floor."
"Whose office?"
Marcus hesitated.
"Julian's assistant suite."
The walls kept closing around the same man.
Julian Cross had disappeared after leaving the Mercer mansion.
His attorney claimed not to know his location.
His corporate credit cards had not been used.
His personal accounts were untouched.
His company laptop had been wiped remotely.
Claire stood beside the window overlooking the snowy grounds.
"He's either running or somebody wants him to look like he's running."
Adrian glanced at her.
"You think Vincent turned on him."
"Rebecca said Julian was scared of someone."
Marcus nodded.
"And Thomas's recorder said the same thing."
Adrian looked toward the board on the wall where Marcus had arranged photographs, dates, names, and financial transfers.
Thomas Bennett.
Rebecca Mercer.
Julian Cross.
Vincent Mercer.
Mara and Caleb Voss.
Dr. Malcolm Vale.
Claire's forged identity documents.
North Harbor Consulting.
"Find the account Rebecca mentioned," Adrian said.
Marcus pointed to North Harbor.
"Could be this one."
"No."
Adrian shook his head.
"Julian told Vincent she knew about North Harbor."
"Then she said she found the account before he admitted what she meant."
Claire understood.
"So maybe North Harbor was only a layer."
Rachel gave a tired smile.
"Welcome to financial crime."
They found the deeper account that afternoon.
North Harbor Consulting had sent money to six companies.
Five were ordinary vendors.
The sixth was called Saint Orison Medical Trust.
It sounded charitable.
It was not.
The trust existed in the Cayman Islands.
Over nine years, it had received more than eighteen million dollars from Mercer-related shell companies.
Some payments were tied to Pier Nine freight movements.
Others came from healthcare contracts.
The authorized beneficial owner was hidden.
But one old filing listed a contact address in Massachusetts.
The address belonged to Vincent Mercer.
Claire stared at the amount.
"Eighteen million dollars."
Adrian shook his head.
"That's only what we can see."
Marcus opened another file.
"Rebecca transferred one dollar into Saint Orison three weeks before she died."
Claire frowned.
"One dollar?"
"To create a traceable transaction."
Rachel understood immediately.
"She was forcing herself into the account history."
Adrian's eyes sharpened.
"So she could prove she found it."
The office phone rang.
Mrs. Callahan answered downstairs.
Seconds later, she called Adrian.
"There's a man at the north gate."
"Name?"
"He won't give one."
"Send him away."
Mrs. Callahan lowered her voice.
"He says he treated Rebecca Mercer."
Adrian was moving before she finished.
Dr. Malcolm Vale stood at the gate in a wrinkled coat.
He looked like he had not slept in days.
His left cheek was bruised.
One hand was wrapped in a bandage.
Marcus searched him personally before allowing him inside.
Vale sat in the study and refused water.
Adrian stood across from him.
"Did you drug my wife?"
Vale closed his eyes.
"No."
"Did you change her chart?"
"Yes."
Adrian stepped forward.
Claire touched his arm.
The contact stopped him.
He looked at her hand.
Then at her.
Claire withdrew it.
"Let him talk."
Vale took a shaking breath.
"I altered her chart because she asked me to."
Nobody expected that.
Adrian stared at him.
"Why?"
"She suspected someone had access to her medical records."
"So you falsified them?"
"We created false medication entries to see whether the information appeared elsewhere."
Rachel leaned forward.
"A canary trap."
Vale nodded.
"Exactly."
Claire asked, "Did it work?"
"Within forty-eight hours, Julian Cross called me and demanded to know why Rebecca's medication had changed."
Adrian's face hardened.
"How would Julian know?"
"He shouldn't have."
"And the midazolam?"
Vale looked sick.
"That was real."
Silence.
"I never prescribed it for home use."
Adrian's voice dropped.
"But it was in her blood."
"Yes."
"Repeatedly."
"Yes."
"And Mara Voss worked in my house."
Vale looked at him.
"I didn't know who she really was."
Claire asked, "What did she pay you for in the hospital video?"
Vale's face tightened.
"She didn't pay me."
"We saw cash."
"It was money Rebecca gave me."
"For what?"
Vale looked toward Adrian.
"To disappear if she died before I could identify who was altering her medication."
Adrian stared at him.
"You took money from my dying wife to run away."
Vale flinched.
"I took money because she believed anyone helping her would become a target."
"She was right."
He held up his bandaged hand.
"Two men came to my home yesterday."
"They wanted Rebecca's original toxicology samples."
Marcus asked, "Do you still have them?"
Vale looked at him.
"No."
Adrian's expression darkened.
"They took them?"
"I moved them a year ago."
"Where?"
Vale looked at Claire.
"Thomas Bennett's daughter has them."
Claire stopped breathing.
"What?"
Vale reached slowly into his coat.
Marcus's hand moved toward his weapon.
Vale removed a receipt.
A private storage company.
The renter name was Claire Bennett.
Claire stared at it.
"I never rented this."
Vale nodded.
"Rebecca did."
"Using my name?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because she believed your father had died protecting evidence."
"She wanted the next evidence hidden where Vincent would never think to look."
Claire felt anger rise again.
"Everyone keeps using my name to hide things from me."
Vale looked ashamed.
"Rebecca intended to tell you."
"When?"
"After she was sure Adrian was safe to trust."
Adrian absorbed that without reaction.
Claire did not.
"His wife wasn't sure he was safe to trust?"
Vale looked at Adrian.
"Not because she thought he was involved."
"Then why?"
"Because she knew he would protect her before he protected the evidence."
Adrian's face changed.
Vale continued.
"And she needed the evidence to survive her."
The storage locker contained four sealed blood samples, Rebecca's handwritten medication diary, and one audio recorder.
In the diary, Rebecca documented every time she felt unusually sedated.
The dates aligned with Mara Voss's nursing shifts.
But not every date.
Three incidents happened on days Mara was not in the house.
Claire looked at Vale.
"So Mara wasn't acting alone."
"No."
The audio recorder contained a conversation captured in Rebecca's bedroom.
A man spoke quietly.
"She won't remember tonight."
A woman's voice answered.
"That's what you said last time."
Claire recognized Mara.
The man's voice was unfamiliar.
Adrian did not recognize it either.
Marcus did.
His face went pale.
"Play it again."
They did.
Marcus closed his eyes.
"I know that voice."
Adrian looked at him.
"Who?"
Marcus opened his eyes.
"Elias Voss."
Claire's stomach dropped.
The father Marcus had believed dead for twelve years had been inside Rebecca's bedroom months before she died.
And according to Mara, he had personally helped sedate her.
Then Vale spoke quietly.
"There's something else."
Adrian looked at him.
"What?"
"Rebecca's cancer killed her."
Adrian went still.
"The sedatives did not cause her illness."
"But they made her confused."
"They weakened her ability to fight."
"They made everyone around her question what she remembered."
Claire looked at the diary.
"So they weren't trying to kill her."
May you like
Vale shook his head.
"They were trying to make sure nobody believed her before she died."
