Chapter 8 - Someone Inside the House

Adrian did not sleep that night.
Neither did Claire.
Lily's school had no record of Vincent Mercer signing in.
The front office staff swore no unauthorized adult had been allowed past reception.
Then Marcus pulled security footage.
At 2:11 p.m. six days earlier, a maintenance technician entered through the service door carrying a toolbox.
He wore a cap low over his face.
The badge on his chest belonged to an employee who had called in sick that morning.
The man spent nineteen minutes inside the school.
Only six seconds of footage showed his face clearly.
It was enough.
Vincent Mercer had gotten within twenty feet of Lily's classroom.
Adrian watched the frame on Marcus's screen.
"How old is this photograph?"
Marcus answered, "Current."
Vincent looked older than the pictures Claire had seen online.
He was sixty-two.
His hair was mostly gray now.
His face had grown heavier.
But the resemblance to Adrian's father was unmistakable.
Claire stood behind them.
"Why would the school let a maintenance worker talk to a student?"
"They didn't," Marcus said.
He advanced the footage.
Lily appeared in the hallway on her way back from the bathroom.
Vincent stepped from an alcove.
He crouched.
The camera had no audio.
For eleven seconds, he spoke to her.
Then Lily backed away.
Vincent smiled.
He handed her something.
A piece of paper.
Lily put it in her pocket.
Claire whispered, "Where is that paper?"
Adrian was already moving.
They woke Lily gently.
She remembered the note after several minutes.
"I threw it away."
"What did it say?"
Lily rubbed her eyes.
"It had Mommy's picture."
Adrian's expression tightened.
"What else?"
"A sentence."
"Do you remember it?"
Lily nodded.
"Daddy chose the company."
Adrian closed his eyes.
Claire watched him.
"Did Vincent say what that meant?"
Lily looked toward her father.
"He said Mommy asked Daddy to stop working when she got sick."
Adrian sat on the edge of the bed.
"She did."
Claire stared at him.
He continued before she could ask.
"And I didn't."
Lily's face tightened.
"So he told the truth."
Adrian looked at her.
"Part of one."
"Mommy died because you worked?"
The question seemed to empty the room of air.
Adrian reached for his daughter.
She pulled away.
Claire had never seen Lily reject him before.
Adrian's hand stopped in midair.
"No, bug."
"Uncle Vincent said you left her alone."
"I made mistakes."
"Did you leave?"
"Sometimes."
Lily's eyes filled.
"Then maybe she was scared."
Adrian's face broke in a way Claire had not believed possible.
He looked down.
"She was."
Claire sat beside Lily.
"Your mom being sick was not your dad's fault."
Lily looked at her.
"How do you know?"
Claire wished truth could be simpler.
"Because people can make mistakes without causing every bad thing that happens."
Lily looked at Adrian again.
"Did Mommy forgive you?"
He swallowed.
"Yes."
"How do you know?"
"Because she told me."
Lily thought about that.
Then she moved closer to him.
Adrian wrapped both arms around her.
His eyes met Claire's over Lily's shoulder.
There was gratitude there.
And shame.
And something Claire was afraid to name.
By morning, the attack shifted again.
Dana Whitaker returned with a court order permitting a temporary child safety plan.
Claire could remain in the home, but another approved adult had to be present whenever she cared for Lily.
Adrian wanted to challenge it immediately.
Rachel advised compliance for forty-eight hours while she dismantled the forged evidence.
"You fight the state like an enemy and Vincent will use it," she warned.
Adrian's face hardened.
"He already is."
"Then stop helping him."
The restriction humiliated Claire more than she expected.
Mrs. Callahan had to follow them to the playroom.
A security officer had to stand outside the garden room.
Every normal moment became evidence that somebody might misinterpret.
Lily noticed.
"Why is Mrs. Callahan coming everywhere?"
Claire forced a smile.
"She likes us."
Mrs. Callahan raised an eyebrow.
"Do I?"
Lily giggled.
For ten seconds, the house felt normal.
Then an alarm sounded from the north corridor.
Marcus's voice came through the intercom.
"Everyone stay where you are."
Claire stood.
Mrs. Callahan moved toward Lily.
"What happened?"
No answer came.
The alarm stopped abruptly.
Then the lights flickered.
Claire's pulse jumped.
"Lily, come here."
The child started toward her.
A crash sounded behind the interior door.
Mrs. Callahan gasped.
Claire pulled Lily against her.
"Stay behind me."
The door opened.
A security guard entered.
"We need to move you."
Claire recognized him vaguely.
New rotation.
One of Marcus's men.
"Where?"
"Safe room."
Mrs. Callahan nodded.
Claire did not move.
Something felt wrong.
The guard's earpiece was missing.
Every security officer in the house wore one.
"What's your name?"
He frowned.
"Excuse me?"
"Your name."
"Dawson."
Claire looked at Mrs. Callahan.
She shook her head almost imperceptibly.
The guard stepped closer.
"We have to go now."
Claire backed toward the far wall.
"Marcus said stay where we are."
"Orders changed."
"Then call him."
The man's expression shifted.
Barely.
But enough.
Claire picked up a heavy brass bookend from the table.
"Call him."
The guard's hand moved toward his jacket.
Mrs. Callahan grabbed Lily.
Claire swung the bookend before she saw what he reached for.
It struck his wrist.
A syringe fell to the carpet.
Mrs. Callahan screamed.
The man lunged.
Claire shoved the table between them.
He came around it fast.
She threw the bookend.
It missed his head and shattered a lamp.
Mrs. Callahan ran with Lily toward the service door.
The man caught Claire by the arm.
Pain shot through her shoulder.
She drove her knee upward and twisted.
He swore.
Then a gunshot cracked from the hallway.
The man froze.
Marcus stood in the doorway with his weapon raised.
"Let her go."
The intruder released Claire.
He looked toward the side door.
Marcus moved closer.
"Don't."
The man smiled.
Then he bit down hard on something inside his mouth.
Marcus rushed him.
The intruder collapsed before he reached the floor.
Claire backed against the wall, shaking.
"What happened?"
Marcus checked the man's pulse.
His expression darkened.
"He planned not to answer questions."
Claire looked at the syringe on the carpet.
"What was in that?"
Marcus did not touch it.
"We'll find out."
Adrian arrived seconds later.
His eyes went first to Claire.
Then to the body.
Then to the syringe.
"Where's Lily?"
"Mrs. Callahan took her through the service corridor."
Adrian turned toward the door.
Marcus caught his arm.
"Wait."
Adrian looked at him.
Marcus touched his earpiece.
"Callahan, report."
Static.
No answer.
Claire's fear returned instantly.
"Go."
They ran into the service corridor.
The passage was empty.
A side door stood open.
Snow blew across the floor.
Outside, a set of footprints led toward the old conservatory.
Adrian ran faster.
They found Mrs. Callahan thirty yards away, lying in the snow.
Claire screamed her name.
The housekeeper groaned.
A red mark spread across her temple.
"Lily," she whispered.
Adrian's face drained.
"Where?"
Mrs. Callahan lifted one shaking finger toward the conservatory.
The glass building stood at the edge of the winter garden.
Its doors were closed.
Adrian reached them first.
Locked.
Marcus kicked the lower panel until the old wood split.
They forced their way inside.
The conservatory was freezing.
Dead vines twisted around iron supports.
Snow pressed against the glass roof.
"Lily!"
Adrian's voice echoed.
No answer.
Claire heard something faint.
A small cough.
"There."
They followed it behind a stone planter.
Lily was curled on the floor beneath an old canvas cover.
Claire dropped beside her.
"Lily."
The girl opened her eyes.
"Claire?"
Adrian fell to his knees.
"I'm here."
He pulled her into his coat.
Claire checked her arms, face, neck.
No obvious injury.
"What happened?"
Lily pointed toward the far door.
"The lady brought me."
Marcus looked up.
"What lady?"
Lily's teeth chattered.
"She said Claire wanted me outside."
Claire felt sick.
"What did she look like?"
Lily squeezed her eyes shut.
"Like Claire."
Nobody spoke.
Then Lily opened one mittened hand.
Rebecca's missing sapphire ring lay in her palm.
"She gave me Mommy's ring."
Adrian stared at it.
Lily continued in a whisper.
"She said Daddy would understand."
Marcus took one slow breath.
"Understand what?"
May you like
Lily looked at Adrian.
"That somebody in our house opened the safe for her."
