Chapter 6 - The Name Adrian Never Mentioned

"Claire Bennett."

The voice came from the darkness twenty feet away.

Adrian moved in front of her before she could think.

Marcus drew his weapon.

"Identify yourself."

No answer.

Only the slow echo of footsteps retreating down the corridor.

Marcus clicked on a tactical light and swept it across the concrete walls.

Empty.

Then something rolled toward them.

A phone.

Its screen glowed on the floor.

Adrian picked it up.

A video was already playing.

Claire saw the mansion kitchen.

Live.

Mrs. Callahan stood at the counter.

Lily sat on a stool eating pancakes.

A timestamp in the corner showed the current minute.

Claire's blood turned cold.

"They're watching the house right now."

Adrian touched his earpiece.

"Lock Lily in the safe room."

Static answered.

Marcus tried his radio.

Nothing.

The corridor was blocking the signal.

"We move," he said.

They ran.

At the far end, the service door had been chained from the outside.

Marcus fired once into the locking mechanism.

The blast deafened Claire in the narrow corridor.

They forced the door open and emerged into a maintenance stairwell.

Adrian was already calling the house.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Claire could barely breathe.

"Why aren't they answering?"

Marcus pulled out a second phone.

"Could be a jammer."

"At the house?"

"Or here."

Adrian called a third number.

This time someone answered.

"Report."

A guard's voice came through.

"Lily is secure."

Adrian closed his eyes for one second.

Claire nearly collapsed against the wall.

The live video on the dropped phone suddenly froze.

Then new text appeared.

YOU KEEP RUNNING TO THE WRONG PLACE.

Beneath it came another line.

ASK ADRIAN WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR FATHER'S FILE.

Claire read the words twice.

Then she turned toward Adrian.

"What file?"

Adrian's face hardened.

"I don't know."

The phone buzzed again.

A photograph appeared.

It showed an old red folder.

Across the front was written THOMAS BENNETT - INCIDENT REVIEW.

In the upper-right corner was a handwritten initial.

A.M.

Claire looked at Adrian.

"Those are your initials."

He did not deny it.

"You said Marcus investigated."

"He did."

"Then why is your name on the file?"

"Because I reviewed his findings."

"You told me you asked questions."

"I did."

"That looks like more than questions."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"This is exactly what they want."

Claire laughed in disbelief.

"Of course it is."

"They want you angry at me."

"Maybe they don't have to work that hard."

Marcus stepped between them slightly.

"Not here."

Claire ignored him.

"Did you know my father's crash might not have been an accident?"

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"I suspected it."

The words struck like a slap.

Claire stared at him.

"You suspected it."

"Yes."

"For seven years?"

"I had no proof."

"You had enough to open a file."

"Claire."

"Did you ever tell my mother?"

Adrian went still.

That was answer enough.

Claire's face changed.

"You didn't."

"I did not have evidence that would help her."

"You had doubt."

"Doubt is not a gift to a grieving family."

"Neither is ignorance."

"Sometimes it is."

Claire stepped back as if he had physically pushed her.

"You don't get to decide that for us."

Adrian's control cracked.

"I was trying to keep another family from being dragged into mine."

"And how did that work out?"

Silence.

The answer stood between them in a freezing stairwell while someone streamed live images of Lily from the Mercer mansion.

It had not worked at all.

Marcus said quietly, "We have to get back."

The drive to the estate took eighteen minutes.

Claire sat at the far side of the SUV from Adrian.

Neither spoke.

Marcus reviewed the contents of the gray pouch while two security vehicles surrounded them.

Thomas's recorder contained four files.

The first was the message they had heard.

The second was mostly wind and dock noise.

The third captured an argument between two unidentified men.

One voice belonged to Julian Cross.

The other was too distorted to identify.

Julian could be heard saying, "Vincent will destroy all of us if he thinks we kept a copy."

The fourth file was only eleven seconds long.

Thomas said one sentence.

"If anything happens to me, the red file proves Adrian Mercer knew enough to stop it."

Claire closed her eyes.

Adrian stared straight ahead.

Marcus looked at him.

"I never saw that recording."

Adrian's voice was flat.

"Neither did I."

Claire turned toward him.

"Convenient."

His gaze met hers.

"You think I killed your father?"

She opened her mouth.

No answer came.

The fact that she could not immediately say no seemed to hurt him more than an accusation would have.

He looked away.

When they reached the mansion, Lily was waiting in the safe room.

She ran past Adrian and Marcus and threw herself at Claire.

Claire held her tightly.

"You came back."

"I told you I would."

Lily pulled away enough to look at her.

"You didn't tell me."

Claire realized she was right.

She had left while Lily was with Mrs. Callahan.

The child's lower lip trembled.

"You just went away."

Guilt sliced through Claire.

"I'm sorry."

"Mommy went to the hospital and said she would come back."

Adrian went motionless behind them.

Claire crouched.

"I should have told you before I left."

"Are you leaving now?"

Claire glanced at Adrian.

His expression was unreadable.

"No."

Lily searched her face.

"Promise?"

Claire hesitated.

She remembered her own thought that morning.

Promises to frightened children were dangerous.

Then she took Lily's hand.

"I promise I won't disappear without telling you."

It was the safest truth she could offer.

Lily hugged her again.

Adrian looked away.

Later, after Lily fell asleep in the safe room, Claire found Adrian alone in his study.

The broken window had been boarded from the outside.

Snowlight leaked around the edges.

The red incident file sat on his desk.

Marcus had found a digital copy in an archived server.

Claire stood in the doorway.

"I want to read it."

Adrian nodded.

He did not argue.

That somehow made her angrier.

She sat and opened the file.

The first pages were crash photographs.

She almost closed it immediately.

Her father's truck had been crushed against a concrete barrier.

The cab looked impossibly small.

Claire's hands began to shake.

Adrian moved toward her.

"Don't."

He stopped.

She turned the page.

Brake analysis.

Weather reports.

Witness interviews.

Toxicology.

Then she found Marcus's handwritten notes.

No skid marks consistent with attempted braking.

Brake line damage inconclusive due to impact.

Maintenance records missing.

One witness reported a dark sedan following Bennett's truck fifteen minutes before crash.

Claire's eyes filled.

"You knew all this."

Adrian's voice was low.

"Yes."

She looked at him.

"And then what?"

"I ordered a deeper review."

Claire turned another page.

There was a memo from Marcus.

Investigation suspended at request of A. Mercer.

Claire stopped breathing.

The room seemed to narrow around her.

She lifted the page.

"At your request."

Adrian said nothing.

"You stopped it."

"Yes."

The admission was worse than any excuse.

Claire stood.

"Why?"

Adrian's face tightened.

"Rebecca collapsed the night Marcus found the witness."

Claire stared at him.

"What does that have to do with my father?"

"Her doctors told me she had weeks."

"So you stopped investigating a possible murder?"

"I stopped an investigation that had already drawn attention from people I could not identify."

"You stopped because you were scared."

His eyes flashed.

"Yes."

Claire went still.

Adrian stepped closer.

"I was scared."

His voice was raw now.

"My wife was dying."

"My daughter was three."

"Someone had already followed Thomas Bennett home twice before the crash."

Claire's face drained.

"What?"

Adrian closed his eyes briefly.

"Marcus found surveillance footage from a gas station."

"Why isn't that in the file?"

"Because I removed it."

Claire stared at him.

"You destroyed evidence."

"I hid it."

"From whom?"

"Everyone."

"Why?"

Adrian's gaze held hers.

"Because the car following your father belonged to Mercer Holdings."

Claire stopped breathing.

"Whose car?"

Adrian looked toward the locked cabinet behind his desk.

Then he opened it and removed an old photograph.

The vehicle was visible in the background of a security still.

A black sedan.

The registered executive user appeared on a typed note beneath it.

Claire read the name.

Julian Cross.

Her hands went numb.

"So Rebecca was right."

"About Julian being involved, yes."

Claire looked at Adrian.

"Then why is he still your CFO?"

The question hung between them.

Adrian's answer came quietly.

"Because three days after I found this, Julian gave me proof that the sedan had been stolen from the company garage before your father's crash."

"And you believed him?"

"The police report supported it."

"The same police who called the crash an accident?"

Adrian had no answer.

Claire shook her head.

"You kept him close anyway."

"I watched him."

"For seven years?"

"Yes."

"And found nothing?"

Adrian looked at the note from Rebecca.

"Until today."

A knock sounded at the study door.

Marcus entered holding a laptop.

His face was pale.

"We traced the phone that sent the photographs."

Adrian turned.

"Where?"

Marcus looked at Claire first.

That frightened her more than anything.

"The number was activated six weeks ago."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"Why are you looking at me?"

Marcus placed the laptop on the desk.

"Because the account was opened using your driver's license."

Claire stared at the screen.

Her name appeared beside a prepaid wireless account.

Her address.

Her date of birth.

Her license number.

Everything was correct.

Adrian's eyes moved to her.

Claire whispered, "I didn't open that."

Marcus nodded.

"I believe you."

"But somebody had my information."

"Yes."

Claire felt sick.

Then Marcus opened a second file.

"There's more."

A security image appeared.

It showed a woman buying the phone from a convenience store outside Boston.

The image was grainy.

But the woman wore Claire's coat.

Claire's exact coat.

And when the woman turned slightly toward the camera, the lower half of her face looked disturbingly similar to Claire's.

Adrian leaned closer.

Marcus froze the frame.

The woman lifted one hand to adjust her hair.

A ring flashed on her finger.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Claire looked at him.

"What is it?"

He did not answer.

May you like

Marcus did.

"That ring belonged to Rebecca."
