Chapter 17 - THE DINING TABLE

By the time we reached the street, the moving truck's ramp was down and the old table stood beneath gray blankets.

I did not block the driveway or climb inside.

I stayed beside Thomas and showed the responding officer our photographs and the property inventory.

The movers said they had been told everything belonged to Ryan.

Once the dispute was explained, they stopped handling the table and asked for written direction.

The officer documented the disagreement.

Ryan emerged from the doorway furious that strangers were no longer obeying him.

“It's only furniture,” he shouted.

I heard my own Christmas humiliation in those words.

Only a chair.

Only furniture.

Only decades of another person's life.

I answered that he could collect his belongings according to the agreed process, but he did not have my permission to take mine.

Ryan stepped toward me.

Emily moved beside me before I could react.

“Don't,” she said.

He stopped, startled that she had used a voice he could hear.

Linda appeared holding a cardboard box filled with Christmas ornaments.

She declared them family property.

I recognized the little wooden star Noah had painted and the porcelain angel Henry's mother had given us.

I asked her to set the box down until we could sort ownership peacefully.

She looked at the neighbors who had gathered behind their curtains and seemed, for the first time, to understand that her performance had an audience she could not control.

Ryan's attorney arrived and negotiated a supervised inventory and move-out timetable consistent with the legal proceedings.

Nothing was resolved by my simply ordering him away.

Each item would be documented.

Each obligation would be treated separately.

It was maddeningly slow, and exactly what prevented another chaos from swallowing us.

I watched the movers return the table to the dining room.

Then Ryan leaned toward me and whispered, “You think getting a table back makes you safe?”

Thomas heard him and recorded the exact words in his notes.

I felt cold all the way down my arms.

Ryan turned toward the truck, and a small ledger fell from the open pocket of his coat.

Emily picked it up before he noticed.

On the first page were names, amounts, and dates.
