Chapter 12 - THE BACKUP

Henry's flash drive contained scanned receipts, emails, and a chronological file he had labeled House Notes.
It was not a secret video archive or an impossible confession.
It was precisely the kind of quiet, practical record Henry kept when something worried him.
In one message Ryan had proposed that Henry place the house into a company he would manage.
In another Henry declined and asked Ryan not to raise the issue again.
A later message from Linda said Emily's “inheritance ought to be useful while Margaret can still enjoy seeing it work.”
I hated reading them.
Henry had protected my peace by handling requests I had never known were made.
I wondered whether he had also protected my ignorance.
Thomas examined the files and said their strongest immediate use was to counter claims that our family had promised Ryan control of the property.
He stressed that electronic records would need authentication if challenged.
There would be no miracle document that removed the need for process.
One afternoon I visited the garden beneath its blanket of snow.
June accompanied me to the fence because I did not yet have access to the main house.
We could see the rose trellis Henry had built on our twenty-fifth anniversary.
A contractor was measuring it.
I asked what he was doing.
He said Ryan had commissioned a patio renovation that included removing the old structure.
I showed him proof that ownership was disputed and gave him Thomas's contact.
He stopped the work pending clarification.
Ryan called within an hour, furious.
“You embarrassed me in front of a contractor,” he said.
I asked whether he had obtained my consent to alter the property.
He ignored the question and told me everything would be easier if I just let him handle the future.
For a second I heard the charming man Emily had married underneath the threat.
That made it worse.
Cruelty delivered in a familiar voice can make a person doubt what she knows.
Later, Emily received an email from a financial institution asking her to confirm a change of mailing address.
The requested destination was Linda's condominium.
The email concerned an account Emily had opened for Ava and Noah.

For the first time I felt the full shape of the scheme: if Ryan could not take my house, he was still trying to reach anything carrying a family name.
