THE HOUSE WAS MINE / Chapter 11 / 20

Chapter 11 - THE PAGE TORN FROM MY NOTEBOOK

The stolen page held a list of ideas I had once considered after Henry died: selling the house, adding Emily to an account for emergencies, and leaving equal gifts for the grandchildren.

Beside one line I had written, Ask lawyer about trust.

Linda's attorney presented those words as proof of an intention to give the property away.

Thomas responded that considering an estate plan was not executing one.

Still, the fact that someone had entered my private desk made the humiliation of Christmas feel like only the opening move.

June helped me reconstruct the house's access history from the security system I had purchased and legally controlled.

There were entries during my absence that did not match anyone's claimed schedule.

We preserved the export rather than changing it.

An investigator would decide what it meant.

I was tempted to watch the footage repeatedly, but Thomas told me that I already knew the important thing: people I trusted had searched places I had never offered them.

Emily asked to meet Ryan in a supervised family-services setting to discuss the children's schedule.

She did not ask me to come.

For once I let her handle an adult decision without hovering at her elbow.

When she returned, she looked tired but not defeated.

“He said he would forgive me if I brought the children back and made you withdraw everything,” she reported.

“I told him the children aren't bargaining chips.”

Her words were quiet and entirely her own.

Ryan's attorney then proposed a settlement: I could regain possession sooner if I paid Ryan a large sum for supposed improvements and signed a statement that the family dispute had been a misunderstanding.

Thomas advised against signing while records were outstanding.

I would have considered covering genuinely documented expenses.

I would not buy the right to tell the truth about my own life.

That evening Beth called from Henry's old workshop, where she had gone with me to inventory tools.

She had found a loose panel behind a cabinet.

Inside was a small metal box and a flash drive in a padded envelope.

On the envelope Henry had written one word: Backup.

I thought we had reached the bottom of his precautions.

May you like

The files on that drive showed that he had been keeping a record of Ryan years before his death.
