Chapter 10 - LINDA’S PRICE

The forensic accountant laid out the transfers in a simple timeline.
Northfield Heritage Holdings had paid a substantial deposit on a condominium for Linda, then made recurring payments toward its carrying costs.
Some money came from Ryan's company; some appeared connected to lines of credit Emily knew nothing about.
The transfer trail did not establish who committed any crime, but it showed Linda's comfort had been financed by liabilities spreading through the family.
Emily looked at the figures and sat very still.
“He told me there wasn't money for Ava's braces,” she said.
Her voice did not rise.
The sentence landed harder than shouting.
Ryan had asked me to cover the orthodontist's deposit in the same month money went to his mother's condominium.
I found the receipt in my ledger.
Its ordinary blue ink suddenly felt like an accusation.
We confronted no one that day.
Emily's attorney helped her secure account access, place appropriate fraud alerts, and understand which debts were disputed and which might still require action.
Thomas worked with investigators about the questionable property document.
I collected statements without speculating about arrests.
The discipline felt unnatural, but I had begun to understand that anger made a poor filing system.
At school pickup, Ava asked whether adults could take back love the way they took back presents.
I parked before answering.
I said love was not a reward for obedience, and that sometimes adults behaved badly while claiming to act out of love.
She told me Ryan had asked her to tell a counselor that I often forgot who she was.
He had offered to buy her a tablet if she repeated it.
I thanked her for telling the truth and said it was not her job to fix adult problems.
That night I received a letter from an attorney representing Linda.
She alleged that I had promised to leave the house to my daughter and that Linda had relied upon this family expectation.
Thomas read the claim without changing expression.
“A future hope is not a deed,” he said.
But the enclosure contained a photograph of a page from my private notebook.

Somebody had been searching far more than Henry's chest.
