Infobrief

Chapter 2 - The Key in Her Palm

I had handled classified briefings without letting my face reveal what I knew.

The brass key in Maya's hand frightened me more than any briefing ever had.

It was small, old-fashioned, and marked with a blue fleck of paint.

"Where did you get it?" I asked.

"From the guest-house laundry closet," she answered.

She explained that Julian collected phones from household staff under the pretense of protecting family privacy.

Several people had been made to sign nondisclosure agreements before leaving their jobs.

One woman, Rosa Delgado, had tried to help Maya contact me.

The next morning, Rosa disappeared from the household schedule.

"Julian said she stole something," Maya whispered.

"Did you believe him?"

Maya gave a humorless smile.

"I used to believe him about everything."

Denise returned with Dr. Priya Shah, who described Maya's injuries carefully, without speculation.

She asked if Maya felt safe returning to the Vance property.

"No," Maya said, louder this time.

Dr. Shah documented the answer and offered to connect her with a hospital social worker and an advocate.

I watched Maya choose to speak to them.

For once, nobody in the room made the decision for her.

I asked whether she wanted the key preserved with her belongings or held by me.

She pressed it into my hand.

"I don't want him taking it."

We photographed it beside the tissue and recorded when Maya had given it to me.

I kept the key untouched in a clean envelope and wrote her words on the outside.

At 9:17 that night, a hospital administrator arrived with a strained expression.

"Colonel, there has been a request to move your daughter to a private facility," she said.

"Who requested it?"

"Her husband."

Maya heard and tried to sit up.

"No."

The administrator looked at her, not at me.

"Then we will not transfer you based on that request."

My phone vibrated as she left.

The screen showed an unfamiliar number and a single message.

STOP DIGGING OR ROSA WILL PAY FOR IT.

I turned the phone so Maya could not see the words until I had taken a screenshot.

Then a second message arrived.
