Chapter 18 - The Colonel on Trial

Julian's claim alleged that I had damaged his reputation and used my military position to pressure his family.

The filing quoted the edited hospital video and statements from unnamed witnesses.

I read it at my kitchen table with a cup of coffee growing cold between my hands.

I had expected him to attack Maya again.

I had not expected to become the shield he hoped to break.

My attorney advised me not to respond publicly.

My command was informed through proper channels, and I cooperated with any review required of my conduct.

I had entered the hospital as a mother in dress uniform, not as a commander exercising authority.

Records of the hospital interaction mattered.

Denise documented Maya's visitor request.

Dr. Shah's notes reflected that Maya had spoken for herself.

Hallway footage obtained through lawful process showed no threat by me, only a request for staff assistance.

Julian's edited clip had omitted that context.

His lawyers challenged the completeness of our evidence; ours challenged the misleading presentation of theirs.

The dispute took time.

During one hearing, Julian looked at me across the room and smiled as if we were sharing a private joke.

I did not smile back.

I remembered what Evelyn had said in the hospital.

Your military career doesn't intimidate us.

They had mistaken my uniform for the source of my strength.

It had never been that.

My strength was the knowledge that I did not have to win by frightening them.

I could stand still while facts were examined.

After the hearing, Maya met me outside.

"I'm sorry he dragged you into this."

"He chose to file it," I answered.

"You didn't."

She looked past me toward the courthouse doors.

"Then I'm done apologizing for his choices."

The next morning, a court order required preservation of additional electronic evidence.

And one of the newly preserved messages implicated Evelyn directly.
