Chapter 15 - The Witness Who Changed His Mind

Marcus had insisted that the guest-house security was a private family matter.

The foundation payment connected that project to funds meant for vulnerable families.

Investigators still needed to establish who authorized the transaction and why.

The locksmith who installed the mechanism originally refused to speak.

His company had signed a confidentiality agreement, and he feared losing important clients.

Then Rosa provided a copy of a maintenance complaint describing a door that could not be opened from the inside during a power failure.

The locksmith agreed to a formal interview.

He explained that the lock could be overridden from a remote control panel.

He had advised the estate that the configuration was inappropriate for occupied guest rooms without an accessible emergency exit.

"Who ordered you to leave it that way?" Ortiz asked.

He named Marcus.

The answer shocked Maya more than Julian's lies had.

She remembered Marcus as the charming older brother who once made her laugh at formal dinners.

He had sometimes apologized for Julian's behavior.

"I thought he was on my side," she said.

Ortiz reminded us that the account required corroboration.

Phone logs and installation messages could provide it.

Several days later, Marcus requested a meeting through counsel.

He said he wanted to clarify the instructions he had received.

Julian's lawyer reacted angrily when the news reached him.

Evelyn stopped appearing in public.

Maya asked whether Marcus was finally trying to help.

Rachel shook her head.

"Maybe he's trying to help himself."

Whatever his motive, the family's united front had begun to fracture.

A few hours after Marcus's interview, an anonymous document was delivered to a local reporter.

It accused Maya of stealing from her own foundation.

The document bore a convincing imitation of her signature.

And beneath it was the name of a witness we all recognized.
