Chapter 16 - Rosa's Choice

Rosa stared at the purported statement as if it belonged to someone else.

"I never signed this," she said.

Her fingers trembled around the page.

The document claimed she had watched Maya transfer funds from the charity's accounts.

Rosa had never been allowed access to those accounts.

Rachel helped her obtain counsel before answering detailed questions.

The forged statement was preserved and compared against authenticated documents.

Rosa feared the accusation would follow her son to school.

"They know where he goes," she whispered.

Maya reached for her hand.

"You don't have to keep doing this for me."

Rosa looked at her for a long time.

"I watched a door close on you," she said.

"I'm not going to help them close another one."

The public narrative shifted again when the board announced its independent audit.

Several donors asked for explanations.

The foundation paused questionable payments while maintaining verified services through independent partners.

Maya worried that innocent families would lose help because of the Vances' actions.

She worked with the board's independent members to identify programs that could continue safely.

I recognized my daughter in that work.

Not the version of her Julian had described, but the woman who had always noticed who was being left out.

Then Ortiz called with unsettling news.

Marcus had offered to provide internal correspondence, but only after securing an agreement about how his cooperation would be considered.

Investigators made no promises they could not lawfully keep.

His initial documents included an email thread about Maya's movements on the night she called me.

One message, sent minutes before her call, read: KEEP HER AWAY FROM THE PHONE.

The sender was a Vance family account.
