Chapter 11 - The Price of Silence

Rachel spread the settlement pages across the conference table.
Maya read every line slowly.
The document asked her to deny allegations, transfer certain financial interests, and refrain from making public statements about the family.
It also proposed that she give up access to records from her own foundation.
"They're paying me to say none of it happened," Maya said.
"They're proposing terms," Rachel answered.
"You do not have to accept them."
I did not tell Maya what to choose.
I could see in her face that she was tired of being ordered around by people who claimed to love her.
She pushed the pages away.
"I want the truth more than their money."
Rachel began preparing a formal response.
Meanwhile Ortiz arranged to receive evidence about the foundation through appropriate channels.
I reported the photograph of me and the threatening messages to security officials on base as a potential personal-safety concern.
I gave them the facts without asking for special treatment.
The next morning, a video of the hospital doorway appeared online.
It showed my back, the red uniform, and Marcus laughing.
The clip cut off just before Maya asked for the visitors to leave.
The caption accused me of threatening the Vance family with my rank.
I watched the shortened recording once.
Then I called Denise and asked whether the hospital retained its own hallway footage.
She could not share it with me directly.
She explained the process for lawful requests.
Rachel and Ortiz pursued those avenues.
Maya looked up from the video.
"They'll edit everything," she said.
"Then we will preserve what is real," I replied.
That evening, a woman approached Rosa outside her workplace and said one sentence.
"Tell Maya to check the foundation's first donor."
Rosa recognized the woman from Evelyn's staff.

Before she could ask more, the stranger was gone.
