Chapter 3: The Blue File

Elena returned to the Voss Global archives before federal agents could seal the lower floors.

Her father had designed the archive decades earlier.

He trusted paper more than servers.

“Computers remember what they are told,” he used to say. “Paper remembers what someone tried to hide.”

Elena searched the cabinet where Mara stored private correspondence.

No blue file.

She checked the locked drawers beneath her father’s old desk.

Empty.

Julian examined the room.

“Who is ‘he’?”

“Damian. Thomas Reed. Someone on the board.”

Thomas Reed had served as general counsel for Voss Global for nineteen years. He had supervised every contract that connected Damian’s companies to Elena’s.

He was also the man who had handed Elena the asset-transfer document earlier that evening.

A sound came from behind the archive wall.

Elena stopped.

One of the wooden panels had shifted.

Behind it was a narrow compartment containing a thin blue folder.

Inside were copies of correspondence between Damian and Monarch Ridge Partners.

There were payment schedules, acquisition maps, and lists of Voss Global subsidiaries marked for purchase after a planned collapse.

Monarch Ridge had never been created to steal money from Damian.

It had been created to take control of Voss Global.

On the final page was a handwritten note from Mara.

Damian believes he is using Monarch. He does not know Monarch is using him.

Beneath the note was a photograph.

Elena stared at it.

The man standing beside Damian was younger, with dark hair and the same gray eyes Elena saw whenever she looked in a mirror.

Lucas Voss.

Her younger brother.

Lucas had left the family eleven years earlier after accusing Elena of taking their father’s company and inheritance.

He had not attended their father’s funeral.

Elena had not heard his voice in nearly a decade.

Behind her, the archive door opened.

A man stepped inside.

He looked older than he did in the photograph. There was a scar along his jaw and bitterness in his eyes.

Lucas closed the door behind him.

“Elena.”

She slowly stood.

“What are you doing here?”

He placed a black document case on the table.

“Correcting the story you told everyone after I left.”

Julian moved between them.

Lucas smiled.

“You still keep employees between yourself and the truth.”

“What truth?” Elena asked.

Lucas opened the case and removed an original Voss Global share certificate.

“My father didn’t leave you complete control.”

May you like

He placed the certificate in front of her.

“He gave me the only share that can overrule yours.”
