Chapter 11: The Man Who Lost Everything

Damian ended the call before Veronica could hear more.
“You both think I’m a fool,” he said.
Lucas lowered his hand.
“No one needs to think it anymore.”
Damian ignored him and looked at Elena.
“Veronica emptied my remaining private accounts.”
“She planned to use you from the beginning.”
“She said we would control Voss Global together.”
“And you believed her because she told you what you wanted to hear.”
Damian’s anger faded.
For the first time, he appeared ashamed.
“I have the vault code.”
Elena studied him.
“What do you want?”
“Protection.”
“No immunity.”
“I can give you Veronica, Thomas, Monarch, and every shell company.”
“You can give that to federal investigators.”
“They’ll bury me with her.”
“You helped her.”
“I didn’t know the full plan.”
“You knew enough to destroy companies, pensions, and families.”
Damian looked away.
Elena placed her phone on the table and activated a recording.
“You can tell the truth now. Every part of it. I will deliver the recording to investigators. I will not promise what they do with you.”
Damian stared at the phone.
Then he began speaking.
He admitted sharing confidential contract data with Veronica.
He admitted authorizing hidden loans.
He admitted helping create the false evidence against Elena because he believed it would force her to surrender control.
When he finished, he gave Elena the vault code.
The next morning, Elena and Lucas entered Voss Tower through a maintenance access point Julian had kept outside the new security system.
They reached the original vault beneath the building.
The door was already open.
Northstar’s records were gone.
A monitor inside the vault displayed a live image from the rooftop.
Veronica stood beside a waiting helicopter.
Mara was with her.
So was Julian.
Both appeared unharmed, but security contractors blocked every exit.
Veronica held the missing Northstar files.
She looked directly into the rooftop camera.
“Elena, I know you’re watching.”
A countdown appeared on the monitor.
Ten minutes.
“Bring me the original Voss control certificates,” Veronica continued. “Or these records disappear forever.”
Lucas looked at Elena.
“She wants permanent ownership.”
“No,” Elena said.
She watched Veronica place a hand on Mara’s shoulder.
“She wants us to believe those files are the only evidence.”
Then Julian looked directly into the camera.
His fingers moved beside his leg.
He was using an old Voss emergency signal.
Three short movements.
One long.
May you like
Elena recognized the message.
The real ledger is not on the roof.
