Chapter 8 - The Name On The Dna Report

Ava stared at the silver flash drive until the paramedic covered Victor Saye's hand with a blanket.
"That's mine."
Detective Ruiz looked at her.
The folder names on Elena's drive revealed how deliberately she had organized the truth.
Ava noticed there was no folder labeled VICTORIA.
At first that seemed strange.
The paternity report also forced Adrian to confront a practical terror beneath the emotional one.
Every passport, diploma, tax record, trust document, and medical file carried a name built on false information.
He asked Ruiz whether that meant his life was legally invalid.
She told him no.
People were not erased because someone else falsified paperwork around them.
The answer made him close his eyes with visible relief.
Ava understood why.
For several minutes, Adrian had not been asking who his parents were.
He had been asking whether the world still recognized him as a person once the Halston story disappeared.
That fear would follow him long after the company questions were resolved.
Then she wondered whether Elena had considered Victoria part of Richard's story rather than an independent actor.
There was also no folder labeled THOMAS.
That omission hurt in a way Ava could not explain.
Thomas had been the person present for the childhood Elena was recording messages to protect.
If he was absent from the drive, perhaps Elena trusted him enough that she did not believe he needed documenting.
Or perhaps his role existed somewhere Ava had not looked yet.
The six folders were therefore not merely archives.
They were a map of Elena's fears.
MERIDIAN was the institution.
LEAH and JULIAN were the victims nobody could find.
RICHARD was the threat.
ADRIAN was the child at the center of the lie.
AVA was the daughter Elena expected would someday inherit the burden of deciding what to do.
Ava hated that burden immediately.
She also understood why her mother had chosen files instead of instructions.
Instructions could become another form of control.
Evidence allowed the living to decide.
That distinction would become the most important inheritance Elena ever left her.
"You're sure?"
"There is a diagonal scratch near the connector."
Ruiz examined it without touching the surface.
"We'll bag it."
Ava almost reached for it.
She stopped herself.
Her mother's attorney had told her not to open it until after the wedding.
Technically, after the wedding had arrived.
Nothing about the night felt like the future she had imagined.
Adrian was still focused on Victor.
"Who is my father?"
The paramedic tried to keep him back.
Victor lifted his head.
"Not Richard."
Adrian did not react at first.
Ava felt his entire body go rigid beside her.
"Say that again."
Victor swallowed painfully.
"Richard Halston is not your biological father."
Adrian stared at him.
"Then who is?"
Victor's eyes closed.
The paramedic checked his pulse.
"We need to move him."
Adrian grabbed the edge of the gurney.
"Who is my father?"
Ruiz stepped between them.
"Let them work."
Victor opened his eyes once more.
He looked at Dominic, who had just reached the corridor with his attorney.
"Julian."
Dominic stopped.
Ava saw shock hit him with physical force.
"No."
Victor gave the smallest nod.
"Julian Cross."
Dominic's face went pale.
Ava had never heard the name.
Adrian had.
"Julian Cross founded Cross Meridian."
Dominic stared at him.
"Yes."
"The company before Meridian Industrial."
"Yes."
"He died in 1999."
Dominic closed his eyes.
"Three months before the warehouse fire."
Adrian took one step backward.
"You're telling me the founder of the company was my father."
Victor tried to speak again.
Only air came out.
The paramedics moved the gurney toward the elevator.
Ruiz followed them long enough to issue instructions to an officer.
Then she returned.
"Nobody touches that drive until it is processed."
Ava nodded.
Adrian did not seem to hear.
He turned toward Dominic.
"Did you know?"
"No."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"I knew Julian and Leah were close."
"Close?"
"I did not know she was pregnant."
"Did Richard?"
Dominic looked toward the ballroom upstairs as if he could see through the ceiling.
"If Richard knew Julian had a son, he knew that son could inherit Julian's interest."
Ava felt the corporate logic click into place.
"How much?"
Dominic looked at her.
"Thirty percent of Cross Meridian was held in a founder trust."
Adrian frowned.
"That trust was dissolved."
"It was declared without a living beneficiary."
Dominic's voice grew colder.
"If Julian had a child, it should not have been dissolved."
Ava stared at Adrian.
"Then the company Richard built may have used assets that legally belonged to you."
Adrian laughed once.
It sounded almost desperate.
"This keeps getting better."
Dominic shook his head.
"No."
He looked at Adrian with something close to pity.
"It gets worse."
Ava knew that tone.
"What?"
Dominic hesitated.
"Julian did not die naturally."
Adrian's expression emptied.
"How did he die?"
"A car went off a bridge."
"Accident?"
Dominic looked at him.
"That is what the report said."
No one needed him to explain what he believed.
Ava felt suddenly cold in the humid basement corridor.
"And Leah disappeared after giving birth to Julian's son."
Dominic nodded.
"Yes."
"And Richard and Victoria raised that son as theirs without an adoption decree."
"Yes."
Adrian looked at the ceiling.
"I need air."
Ava followed him toward the stairwell.
He stopped her with one raised hand.
"Please."
The word hurt more than anger.
She stayed behind.
Dominic watched Adrian disappear through the fire door.
"He shouldn't be alone."
Ava turned on him.
"He has been surrounded by people lying to him his entire life."
Dominic flinched.
"Including me."
"Including me."
The admission burned.
She looked at the evidence bag now holding her mother's drive.
"What if Mom knew?"
Dominic's eyes moved to the bag.
"She might have."
"Is that why she made the drive?"
"Possibly."
"You said you didn't know what was on it."
"I don't."
"But you knew it mattered."
"Yes."
Ava rubbed her forehead.
"I am tired of yes arriving after ten minutes of lies."
Dominic accepted the accusation.
Ruiz returned with the bagged drive.
"We can make a forensic image quickly if everyone with a claim agrees."
Ava nodded.
"I agree."
Dominic did too.
Ruiz looked toward the stairwell.
"What about Mr. Halston?"
Ava almost said he had no claim.
Then she remembered the drive might contain information about his mother.
"Ask him."
They found Adrian outside the hotel's loading dock.
He stood in his tuxedo beneath a yellow security light while delivery trucks rumbled on the avenue beyond the gate.
His bow tie was gone.
He had removed his wedding ring.
Ava's breath caught when she saw it in his palm.
He noticed her looking.
"I'm not throwing it away."
"I didn't ask."
"I know."
He closed his fist around it.
Ruiz explained the drive.
Adrian agreed to the forensic copy.
"I want to see whatever is on it."
Dominic started to object.
Ava gave him a look.
He stopped.
The hotel had an executive IT room on the mezzanine.
Ruiz commandeered it with two technicians and an officer.
The original drive was imaged while everyone watched from behind the glass wall.
Nobody spoke.
Ava became aware that she was still wearing her wedding gown.
There was dried champagne near the hem.
Her cheek was swollen.
Her veil had vanished somewhere between the ballroom and the basement.
She almost laughed at the absurdity.
The technician finally opened the copied directory.
There were six folders.
MERIDIAN.
LEAH.
JULIAN.
RICHARD.
AVA.
And one labeled ADRIAN.
Adrian leaned closer.
"Open mine."
Ruiz looked at Ava.
Ava nodded.
The folder contained scanned letters, hospital records, photographs, and a PDF titled PATERNITY TEST - PRIVATE.
Adrian stopped breathing.
"Open it."
The technician did.
The report was dated 2001.
The tested child was identified by initials A.C.
The alleged father was identified as J.X.
Probability of paternity: 99.998 percent.
Adrian stared at the screen.
"A.C.?"
Dominic answered quietly.
"Adrian Carter."
Adrian's eyes closed.
Ava touched his hand.
This time, he did not pull away.
Then the technician scrolled farther.
A note had been attached to the report.
It was handwritten and signed by Elena Vale, Ava's mother.
Ava recognized the looping E immediately.
Her heart slammed against her ribs.
"Mom wrote that."
The technician enlarged the note.
Ava read it aloud.
"If anything happens to Leah, the child must never be left with Richard Halston."
No one moved.
A second line appeared beneath it.
Ava's voice failed.
Dominic leaned closer and read the words for her.
"Richard knows the boy is Julian's, and he intends to use him to take the Cross trust."
Adrian looked at the screen as if it had struck him.
Then the third line appeared.
Dominic stopped breathing.
Ava read it herself.
"If Richard already has the child, do not trust Dominic either."
The room went silent.
Ava turned toward her father.
May you like
Dominic Vale had no answer.
