Chapter 16 - Thomas Sinclair'S Last Secret

Ava had spent nine years mourning Thomas Sinclair as a quiet man who repaired clocks, read history books, and hated driving in heavy rain.
She had never known he once worked inside the company that destroyed her biological family.
The revelation felt intimate in a way corporate theft did not.
Learning the truth about Thomas forced Ava to mourn him a second time.
The first mourning had been for the father she knew.
The second was for the life he carried without telling her.
Thomas's hidden role also explained why Elena trusted him with Ava when Dominic disappeared.
He understood documents, internal controls, and the difference between suspicion and proof.
More importantly, he understood how obsession could consume the person pursuing justice.
Thomas never told Ava stories about defeating enemies.
He told her stories about repairing what other people abandoned.
Old clocks.
Broken furniture.
Friendships damaged by pride.
Looking back, Ava realized he had built his entire second life around restoration rather than revenge.
North Lantern was the corporate version of that instinct.
It did not punish anyone automatically.
It held disputed value still until people could examine who actually owned it.
Ava wondered how many nights Thomas sat at the kitchen table with Meridian records hidden somewhere in the house while helping her finish school projects.
She wondered whether the quiet man who disliked arguments had once confronted executives who could destroy careers with a phone call.
She wondered whether his careful habits came from personality or survival.
Even his obsession with locking doors now looked different.
Ava remembered teasing him for checking the back door twice before bed.
He always laughed and said old houses deserved old-fashioned caution.
Perhaps he had been checking whether the past had found them.
The discovery did not make Thomas less her father.
It made his choice to raise her larger.
He knew exactly what Richard Halston was capable of.
He knew Dominic might someday return.
He knew Elena carried evidence that could ruin powerful men.
He stayed anyway.
Unlike Dominic, Thomas did not treat that risk as a reason to control Ava's future.
He built North Lantern so evidence and money could move beyond any single man's reach.
The design felt like the most Thomas thing imaginable.
He had hidden a mechanism, not a throne.
She remembered Thomas teaching her to ride a bicycle.
She remembered him standing in the kitchen making pancakes shaped like letters.
She remembered him sitting beside Elena's hospital bed until sunrise.
None of those memories looked like corporate compliance.
None looked like North Lantern LLC.
"Say it again."
Dominic looked exhausted.
"Thomas was Meridian's director of internal compliance from 1996 to 1999."
"Under what name?"
"Thomas Sinclair."
"Then why have I never seen him in any company photograph?"
"Because Richard removed him from the official histories after the fire."
Richard laughed softly.
"Convenient."
Dominic turned toward him.
"You had every archived executive photo reissued without him."
"Prove it."
Ava looked at Dominic.
"Did Mom meet Thomas through Meridian?"
"Yes."
The answer hurt differently.
Her parents' entire origin story had been false.
Elena had told Ava she met Thomas at a library fundraiser years after Dominic disappeared.
Ava now understood that story had been designed for a child.
She had never asked whether it remained true for an adult.
"Why did he raise me?"
Dominic's expression softened.
"Because your mother trusted him."
"And you?"
"I did not know at first."
Ava stared.
"You didn't know who was raising your daughter?"
"I was hiding under federal protection arrangements that were not exactly official."
Maya interrupted.
"That sentence requires explanation."
Dominic nodded grimly.
"Later."
Ava almost laughed.
"No more later."
Greene looked at the clock.
"For once, I agree with her."
Dominic rubbed his forehead.
"After the warehouse fire, I was badly injured."
"I believed Richard had men watching every hospital and relative."
"A private investigator moved me under another identity."
"Elena and I agreed that she would disappear with Ava."
"Thomas helped her because he had already discovered irregularities inside Meridian."
Ava's voice shook.
"And he became my father."
Dominic nodded.
"Yes."
"Did you resent him?"
Dominic looked at her for a long time.
"Every day."
The honesty surprised her.
"And I was grateful to him every day too."
Ava looked away before the answer could move her.
She was not ready to be moved.
Owen continued tracing North Lantern.
"The account receiving the transfers was opened using documents uploaded from a private archive server."
"Which archive?"
"The server identifies itself as Sinclair-01."
Ava's heart accelerated.
"Thomas had a server?"
Dominic nodded slowly.
"At the house."
"The Connecticut house?"
"Yes."
"It was sold after Mom died."
"The physical server was removed before the sale."
"By whom?"
Dominic looked at her.
"Me."
Ava closed her eyes.
"Of course."
"I thought it contained only old backups."
"Where is it now?"
"A storage vault owned by the Vale trust."
Maya looked at him.
"Secure it immediately."
Dominic called his security director.
Ava listened to him order a two-person lock and independent custody.
At least he was learning.
Owen traced the twenty-nine million further.
"The funds have not left North Lantern."
Greene frowned.
"Then why move them?"
Owen opened the account rules.
"Because the account automatically converts corporate cash into escrowed trust assets at six this morning unless challenged."
The room went silent.
Adrian understood first.
"The employee trust."
Ava looked at him.
"What?"
"If North Lantern was created to protect the old employee trust, maybe someone is moving money back into it."
Dominic nodded slowly.
"Thomas designed a restitution mechanism."
Richard scoffed.
"You expect the board to believe a dead compliance officer built a machine that steals money for employees?"
Greene looked at him.
"I expect us to examine evidence before calling anything theft."
Owen found a note attached to the escrow instruction.
"There is a release condition."
Ava leaned closer.
"Read it."
Owen hesitated.
"It is addressed to Ava Sinclair."
"Read it."
He opened the note.
The text was short.
IF THIS ACCOUNT EVER ACTIVATES, IT MEANS THE OLD FRAUD HAS BECOME ACTIVE AGAIN.
DO NOT GIVE THE MONEY TO DOMINIC.
DO NOT RETURN IT TO RICHARD.
PLACE IT UNDER INDEPENDENT EMPLOYEE CONTROL.
T.S.
Ava closed her eyes.
Thomas had reached into the room from nine years beyond his grave and distrusted both patriarchs equally.
Adrian looked at her.
"Your dad really knew everyone."
Ava almost smiled.
"Apparently he knew them better than I did."
Dominic looked wounded by the note.
Ava noticed and did not comfort him.
Greene ordered the funds frozen under board supervision until the independent committee could confirm the trust's validity.
The crisis should have eased.
Instead, Owen found another file linked to North Lantern.
"There is an audio archive."
Ava stared.
"From Thomas?"
"Looks like it."
The files were old compressed recordings with dates from 1998 and 1999.
Maya asked that they be copied under forensic procedures before playback.
Owen agreed.
At 4:41, they opened the first index.
The recordings were labeled by initials.
J.C.
R.H.
D.V.
E.V.
T.S.
Ava felt as if she were looking at a map of everyone who had shaped her life before she could speak.
"Open T.S. first."
Owen selected a file dated November 2, 1999.
Thomas's voice filled Richard's office.
Ava stopped breathing.
It was older and firmer than the voice she remembered from bedtime stories.
"This is Thomas Sinclair, internal compliance."
"I am preserving this recording because I no longer believe any board-level conversation at Meridian is safe."
Ava gripped the desk.
Thomas continued.
"Julian Cross is dead."
"Dominic believes Richard arranged it."
"Richard believes Dominic was preparing to remove company assets."
"Both men are hiding records."
"Elena and I have copied what we can."
"If something happens to us, the employee trust must be preserved."
The recording clicked off.
Ava wiped tears from her face.
"Play the next one."
Owen selected a file labeled D.V.-J.C. and dated the day before Julian died.
Dominic's voice came through first.
"You are making a mistake, Julian."
Julian's voice answered.
It was younger, angry, and unfamiliar to Adrian.
"No, Dom."
"The mistake was believing either you or Richard would stop before somebody got hurt."
"I am going to the regulators tomorrow."
Dominic lowered his voice.
"If you walk into that meeting with incomplete records, Richard will bury all of us."
"Then give me the complete records."
Silence.
Julian laughed bitterly.
"Exactly."
The recording ended.
Adrian stared at the speaker.
"That was my father."
Nobody answered.
Owen selected another file.
This one was dated the night Julian died.
The audio quality was worse.
A man's voice spoke first.
It was Richard.
"He is leaving the west office now."
A second voice answered.
Dominic.
"Make sure he does not reach that meeting."
Ava felt every muscle in her body lock.
Richard looked at Dominic and smiled.
The recording continued.
"Do whatever you have to do."
Then the file ended.
Adrian turned toward Dominic.
His face was empty.
Ava could barely breathe.
"Dad."
Dominic stared at the speaker.
"That is not the full recording."
Richard laughed quietly.
"Of course it isn't."
Dominic looked at Ava with something close to panic.
"I did not order Julian killed."
Ava thought of her mother's warning.
Make him prove every truth he asks you to believe.
She stepped away from him.
May you like
"Then prove it."
