Chapter 11 - The Woman In The Church

Saint Mark's Church was empty except for six police officers, Adrian, Miles Carter, and a woman who had spent twenty-six years living under a dead name.
Ava arrived twenty minutes later with Detective Ruiz.
The old church smelled of wax, damp stone, and rain carried in on coats.
Adrian had imagined meeting a biological mother only in the abstract, as something that happened to other people in documentaries or reunion videos.
Those stories usually skipped the first impossible seconds when neither person knew where to put their hands.
Leah did not rush toward him.
Leah carried one object from Adrian's infancy inside her purse.
It was a hospital identification bracelet with BABY CARTER printed in faded blue letters.
She had stolen it from a disposal tray before being transferred from the hospital.
For twenty-six years, she kept it wrapped in tissue because it was the only physical proof she possessed that her son had existed.
When Adrian finally saw it, he did not ask to hold it.
He only stared.
Leah seemed to understand and returned it to the purse without forcing the moment.
That restraint became the first trustworthy thing she gave him.
That restraint mattered.
She seemed to understand that biology did not grant instant intimacy any more than Victoria's lies erased twenty-six years of attachment.
Ava watched Adrian study Leah's face for familiar pieces.
The shape of the eyebrows was his.
The slight crease beside the left eye appeared when both of them were confused.
Miles had the same habit of pressing his lips together before saying something painful.
These small resemblances were almost cruel because they made the connection visible before trust existed.
Adrian asked practical questions at first because practical questions were safer.
Where had Leah lived?
What work had she done?
Did she know Julian's favorite music?
Had Julian known the baby was a boy?
Leah answered every one without embellishment.
When she did not remember, she said so.
When she did not know, she said that too.
Ava noticed Adrian relax by degrees.
After a night full of people manufacturing certainty, honest uncertainty felt almost intimate.
That was the first moment Ava believed Adrian and Leah might eventually build something neither Richard nor Victoria had designed.
Adrian stood near the front pew.
He had removed his tuxedo jacket.
His white shirt was wrinkled.
His face looked stunned.
Miles sat three pews away with a bandage wrapped around his left forearm.
A police medic was checking him.
Ava barely noticed.
Her attention went to the woman seated beneath a statue near the altar.
She was fifty-two or fifty-three, small, with gray threaded through dark hair cut to her shoulders.
Her hands were clasped tightly around a worn leather purse.
She looked at Adrian as if looking directly at the sun hurt too much but she could not force herself to turn away.
Adrian saw Ava.
He walked toward her.
"She says she's Leah."
Ava lowered her voice.
"Do you believe her?"
"I don't know what I believe anymore."
Miles looked up from the pew.
"She's my sister."
His voice was rough.
Adrian turned toward him.
"You knew she was alive."
Miles closed his eyes.
"For six months."
Adrian laughed bitterly.
"Apparently six months qualifies as honesty in this family."
Leah flinched at the word family.
Ava saw it.
Adrian did too.
He looked at the woman who might be his mother.
"Why didn't you find me?"
Leah's eyes filled instantly.
"I tried."
"For twenty-six years?"
"For as long as I knew you were alive."
Adrian stared at her.
"When was that?"
Leah looked at Miles.
He answered.
"Six months ago."
Adrian went still.
Ava felt the cruelty of the truth before she understood it.
"You thought he was dead."
Leah nodded.
Her lips trembled.
"They brought me a certificate."
Victoria's red file flashed through Ava's mind.
"A death certificate."
Leah looked at her.
"Yes."
"Whose name was on it?"
Leah swallowed.
"Baby Carter."
Adrian turned away.
Leah stood quickly.
"Please."
He raised one hand without facing her.
She stopped.
"I woke up in that hospital and they told me you had stopped breathing."
Her voice broke.
"They told me there had been complications."
"They said I had signed consent forms while sedated."
"I knew I hadn't."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"I went to the nursery and they would not let me in."
"Then Victoria came."
Ava remembered Victoria's confession.
Leah continued.
"She was holding you in a photograph she showed me."
"I thought she had stolen you."
"I screamed."
"They restrained me."
"Two days later, Richard came alone."
Adrian turned back.
Leah's face hardened.
"He told me Julian was dead because he had tried to fight men more powerful than he was."
"He told me I would die the same way if I did not stop asking questions."
Miles bowed his head.
"I didn't know."
Leah looked at him.
"You were twenty-one."
"I should have known."
"Richard made sure you didn't."
Detective Ruiz stepped closer.
"What happened after the threat?"
Leah tightened her grip on the purse.
"I was transferred to a private facility in another state."
"Against your will?"
"I signed the transfer because I thought the baby was dead."
"Then what?"
"A woman came to see me three weeks later."
Ava already knew.
"Elena."
Leah looked at her with surprise.
"You have her eyes."
Ava's throat tightened.
"She was my mother."
Leah began crying.
"She saved my life."
Ava felt fresh grief open inside her.
"How?"
"She told me the death certificate was false."
Adrian stepped closer.
"She knew I was alive?"
"She believed you were."
"Did she know where I was?"
"Not at first."
Leah took a trembling breath.
"She helped me leave the facility under another name."
"Sarah Cole."
Leah nodded.
"She told me not to contact anyone until she could prove where you were."
"Then the warehouse burned."
Ava listened.
"Everyone said Dominic died."
"Elena disappeared with you."
"Miles was being watched."
"I had no money and no proof I had ever given birth."
"Every record I requested came back changed."
Adrian looked at Miles.
"And you?"
Miles's face was full of shame.
"Richard hired me in 2002."
Adrian stared at him.
"You went to work for him after your sister disappeared?"
"I went to work for him because she disappeared."
"You suspected him."
"Yes."
"And you never told me."
Miles looked at him.
"I didn't know you were the baby."
Adrian's expression shifted.
"When did you find out?"
"Twelve years ago."
Dominic had said he confirmed Adrian's identity when Adrian was thirteen.
Ava felt another connection form.
"Dominic told you."
Miles nodded.
Adrian went pale with anger.
"So both of you knew."
"We suspected."
"Stop using that word."
Miles flinched.
"We confirmed it with a DNA sample from a glass you left in your father's car."
Adrian stared at him.
"You stole my DNA."
"Yes."
"And then what?"
Miles looked toward Leah.
"I tried to find her."
"For twelve years?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell me first?"
Miles's voice cracked.
"Because Richard had people watching you."
"You were one of those people."
"I know."
Adrian laughed in disbelief.
"Everyone protected me by lying to me."
Ava felt the sentence enter her like a knife because it included her too.
Leah stood.
"I did not know."
Adrian looked at her.
"I believe you."
She covered her mouth.
It was the first mercy anyone had given her.
Adrian walked toward the altar rail and sat on the step.
Leah remained where she was.
Ava wanted to go to him.
She stopped herself.
He needed one person in the room to let him choose the distance.
Detective Ruiz asked Miles about the burned truck.
Miles took a long breath.
"Richard ordered the archive moved yesterday."
"Why?"
"He received a warning that a preservation action was coming."
Ava looked at him.
"From whom?"
Miles hesitated.
Ruiz sharpened her voice.
"Mr. Carter."
"Someone inside Vale's legal team."
Ava went cold.
"Who?"
"I don't know the name."
Dominic had a leak.
That explained why the archive facility had been emptied before service.
Ruiz continued.
"Why was your truck used?"
"Victor and I were told to move the boxes to a private warehouse."
"Did you?"
"At first."
"Then?"
Miles glanced toward Adrian.
"Victor found a box labeled E.V."
Ava understood.
"Elena Vale."
"Yes."
"The ledger?"
"We thought so."
"What did you do?"
"We diverted the truck."
Ruiz frowned.
"You stole the archives from Richard."
"We were trying to keep him from destroying them."
"Who burned the truck?"
Miles's face darkened.
"Victor Saye wasn't the only security man Richard hired tonight."
"Name."
"Caleb Voss."
Ruiz wrote it down.
"What happened?"
"Voss followed us."
"He forced the truck off the road."
"Victor took the box and left in another vehicle."
"I stayed long enough to make Voss think the box was still inside."
"Then he hit me."
Miles touched the bandage on his arm.
"I woke up in the ditch after the truck was burning."
Ava stared at him.
"How did you get here?"
"A delivery driver picked me up."
"Why come to the hotel?"
Miles looked at Adrian.
"Because I knew tonight was the last chance."
Ruiz looked at him.
"Last chance for what?"
Miles reached inside his coat slowly.
Every officer tensed.
He pulled out a small key wrapped in tape.
"To get the original Cross trust certificate before Richard destroyed it."
Adrian stood.
"Where is it?"
Miles looked at Ava.
"In the Halston house."
Ava thought of Victoria's hidden library safe.
Miles continued.
"But the certificate isn't the worst thing in that safe."
Ruiz's eyes narrowed.
"What is?"
Miles looked directly at Adrian.
May you like
"The recording Richard made the night Julian died."
