Chapter 7 - The Room Behind The Kitchen

The photograph of Miles had been printed less than an hour earlier.
Detective Ruiz showed them the image on her phone.
Miles stood beside a service elevator in the hotel basement wearing his dark driver's suit.
The hotel basement had been designed to keep expensive celebrations looking effortless.
Guests saw champagne appear, tables reset, and flowers replaced without seeing the corridors where hundreds of workers made that illusion possible.
Richard liked systems like that.
As officers moved through the service corridors, hotel employees began recognizing that the scandal upstairs had reached their workspace.
A dishwasher whispered that he had seen Victor arguing with another security man near the loading bay.
A pastry chef remembered a man in a dark coat asking which staircase reached the bridal level without using guest elevators.
None of the details solved the case alone.
Together they reminded Ava that powerful conspiracies still depended on ordinary spaces where ordinary people noticed things.
Richard could purchase systems and silence contractors.
He could not control every pair of eyes in a building containing four hundred workers.
That simple fact gave Ava more hope than Dominic's lawyers had all night.
He liked polished surfaces supported by invisible labor and invisible control.
Ava realized the basement therefore suited the night's secrets almost too well.
Victor Saye had spent decades working in places guests never noticed.
He knew which stairwells avoided cameras.
He knew which doors opened with contractor badges.
He knew how security systems were built because he had once helped design them.
Yet somebody had left him unconscious within yards of a working kitchen where staff moved constantly.
That suggested panic.
Whoever struck Victor did not have time to move him somewhere safer.
The stolen drive in his hand suggested he had changed sides at the worst possible moment.
Ava wondered whether Victor took the drive from her room to deliver it to Richard and then reconsidered.
She wondered whether Miles convinced him.
She wondered whether Elena's files contained something personal enough to make an old security man betray the employer he had served for half his life.
Every possibility led back to Adrian.
That was what frightened Ava most.
The conspiracy was no longer centered on money.
Money explained behavior.
It did not explain why so many people had spent decades watching one child grow up.
His face was turned away from the camera.
A digital timestamp in the corner read 8:42 p.m.
That was twenty-three minutes before Victoria slapped Ava.
Adrian stared at the picture.
"He's here."
Ruiz shook her head.
"He was here."
"Same thing."
"Not in an investigation."
Adrian looked toward the ballroom doors.
Ava knew what he was thinking.
She was thinking it too.
If Miles had been inside the hotel, he might have known who entered the bridal suite.
He might also know who moved the archive boxes and why his truck was burning on the interstate.
Dominic pointed at the photograph.
"That service elevator opens near the catering kitchens."
Ruiz looked at him.
"How do you know?"
"I studied the building plans before the trust acquired the debt."
Ava gave him a tired look.
"Of course you did."
Ruiz asked the hotel manager to pull basement footage.
The manager made three calls.
His expression grew worse with each one.
"The basement camera network went offline at 8:39."
Ava looked at the timestamp again.
"Three minutes before the picture."
"Yes."
"How long was it offline?"
"Twenty-seven minutes."
Adrian laughed without humor.
"Long enough to do almost anything."
Ruiz looked at Richard across the ballroom.
"Who has access to the hotel's camera system?"
The manager hesitated.
"Our security team."
"Anyone else?"
"The event security contractor was given limited access for tonight."
Ava already knew the answer.
"Halston Event Security."
The manager nodded.
Richard's fingerprints were all over the night even when his hands were clean.
Ruiz requested the contractor roster.
Ava stayed close to Adrian while he read the list.
One name made him stop.
"Victor Saye."
Ava looked at him.
"Who is that?"
"My father's former head of corporate security."
Dominic's face darkened.
"He worked at Meridian before that."
Adrian looked at him sharply.
"What did he do at Meridian?"
"Loss prevention."
Richard overheard them and moved closer.
"Victor is retired."
Ruiz looked up.
"Not tonight."
The roster showed Victor Saye had checked into the hotel at 3:12 p.m.
He had not checked out.
"Find him."
Ruiz's order sent security officers through the service corridors.
Victoria returned from her interview furious and tear-streaked.
She saw the roster in Adrian's hand.
"What now?"
He held it up.
"Dad hired Victor Saye for tonight."
Victoria's eyes widened.
She turned to Richard.
"You said he was in Arizona."
Richard's expression did not move.
"Plans change."
Victoria stared at him.
"Why is he here?"
"Security."
"For whom?"
The question silenced him.
Ava watched Victoria's face carefully.
For the first time, she believed the older woman might not know everything Richard had done.
That did not make her innocent.
It made the conspiracy messier.
Victoria turned toward Ava.
"I did not go into your room."
Ava looked at her bare hand.
"Your ring did."
"Richard had that ring this afternoon."
Every head turned.
Richard looked at his wife.
"Victoria."
She took a step away from him.
"You said the clasp was loose."
Richard's voice became a warning.
"Think carefully."
Victoria laughed shakily.
"There it is."
Adrian looked at her.
"There is what?"
"The voice he uses when he wants you to remember what happens if you embarrass him."
Ava felt the room tilt again.
Victoria looked at Richard.
"You took my ring before the ceremony."
"I returned it."
"After dinner."
"So?"
"So whoever wore it in that hallway could have had it because of you."
Richard's face went cold.
"You are confused."
Victoria actually laughed.
"No."
She touched the cheek she had used to slap Ava as if suddenly ashamed of the hand itself.
"I think I'm becoming less confused by the minute."
Adrian looked at his father.
"Did you send someone into Ava's room?"
"No."
"Did Victor?"
"I don't know."
"Did you know about the flash drive?"
Richard's eyes moved toward Dominic.
That was answer enough.
Ava stepped forward.
"How?"
Richard said nothing.
"How did you know my mother left me a drive?"
Dominic looked at her too.
Richard's silence suddenly implicated more than himself.
Ava turned toward Dominic.
"Who knew?"
"My attorney."
"Who else?"
"Your mother's attorney."
"Who else?"
Dominic hesitated.
Ava's stomach dropped.
"Who else, Dad?"
"Miles."
Adrian stared at him.
"Miles knew?"
Dominic nodded.
"He was the one who told us Elena had created it."
Ava felt anger rise through her fear.
"So the man everyone is looking for knew about the drive, knew about the ledger, knew about Adrian's birth, and knew this hotel."
"Yes."
"And you still didn't tell me you were talking to him."
Dominic's jaw tightened.
"I was protecting the source."
"He is my husband's uncle."
Adrian flinched at the word husband.
Ava felt it too.
The marriage had lasted only hours and already sounded fragile.
A security officer rushed into the ballroom.
"Detective."
Ruiz turned.
"We found Saye."
Everyone went still.
"Where?"
"Service level two."
"Is he cooperative?"
The officer hesitated.
"He's unconscious."
Ava felt Adrian tense beside her.
"Alive?"
"Yes."
Ruiz was already moving.
"Call EMS and seal the corridor."
Adrian followed.
Ruiz turned around.
"No."
"Detective."
"No."
Ava grabbed Adrian's sleeve.
"Let her work."
He pulled free.
"Everybody keeps telling me to wait while my life gets explained by strangers."
Ava understood.
She also understood that charging into a possible crime scene would make everything worse.
"Then we wait ten feet outside the tape."
Ruiz gave them both a look of disbelief.
"Neither of you heard the word no, did you?"
Dominic almost smiled.
"She gets that from her mother."
Ava shot him a look.
It was the wrong time, but the comment steadied her.
Ruiz reluctantly allowed Adrian and Ava to follow with an officer between them and the scene.
The basement corridor smelled of bleach, steam, and roasted garlic from the kitchens.
A paramedic knelt beside Victor Saye near a locked utility door.
His gray hair was wet with sweat.
A bruise darkened his temple.
His right hand clutched something against his chest.
Ruiz crouched beside him.
"Mr. Saye, can you hear me?"
His eyes fluttered.
Ava held her breath.
Victor looked past Ruiz.
He saw Adrian.
His expression filled with panic.
"Get him out."
Adrian stepped forward.
"Where is Miles?"
Victor shook his head violently.
"Get him out of the hotel."
"Why?"
Victor's eyes moved toward the locked utility door.
"Because Richard knows Miles told him."
Ruiz leaned closer.
"Told him what?"
Victor looked at Adrian again.
"Who his real father was."
Adrian's face went white.
Before anyone could ask the next question, Victor opened his hand.
A small silver flash drive lay in his palm.
Ava recognized the scratch across its side.
May you like
It was the drive stolen from her bridal suite.
