Chapter 4 - The Ring

Victoria noticed where they were looking and immediately curled her fingers into her palm.
That tiny gesture convinced Ava faster than any confession could have.
"Where is your ring?"
The missing onyx ring carried its own history inside the Halston family.
Victoria wore it whenever she wanted to look intimidating rather than elegant.
Adrian once joked that the ring functioned as a warning label.
Adrian's reaction to the ring mattered to Ava almost as much as the footage itself.
He did not immediately defend Victoria simply because she was his mother.
He also did not accuse her simply because the image looked convincing.
He asked for the rest of the evidence.
That small discipline contrasted sharply with the man who had asked Ava to keep the peace earlier in the evening.
Pain was forcing him to mature faster than either of them wanted.
Ava saw that change and hated that it took public humiliation and family collapse to produce it.
Still, she stored the moment away because later she would need evidence about Adrian too, not only evidence against him.
Ava had laughed then because Victoria's cruelty still seemed social rather than dangerous.
At rehearsal dinner the previous night, Victoria tapped that same stone against her wineglass while explaining which guests mattered enough to receive personal introductions.
She had ranked people as casually as other women discussed flowers.
Ava remembered thinking that no object could look colder than black stone surrounded by diamonds.
Now the ring appeared in security footage beside her stolen flash drive.
The coincidence was almost too perfect.
That was what made Ava suspicious.
Richard rarely relied on evidence that merely happened to exist.
He preferred evidence placed where another person would draw the useful conclusion without being told.
A ring could accuse Victoria while keeping Richard invisible.
A vendor credential could accuse Miles while keeping Richard invisible.
A burned truck could erase records while making the driver look responsible.
Ava began to see the pattern before she could prove it.
The trick was not controlling every person.
The trick was controlling what each person believed about the others.
That was why Adrian's decision to challenge his mother mattered.
For the first time, one member of the Halston family was refusing the conclusion Richard's environment had prepared for him.
Ava did not know whether that choice would save their marriage.
She knew it might save Adrian from becoming his father.
Victoria stared at her.
"Excuse me?"
Ava walked toward her.
"The black onyx ring you wore during dinner."
"I took it off."
"When?"
Victoria's lips tightened.
"I do not answer to you."
Adrian stepped beside Ava.
"You answer to me."
His mother looked genuinely shocked.
"Adrian."
"Where is the ring?"
Victoria's eyes flicked toward Richard.
Ava saw it.
So did Adrian.
Richard spoke quickly.
"This is ridiculous."
Ava turned on him.
"Then help us make it ridiculous."
"Meaning?"
"Ask your wife to empty her clutch."
Victoria's face flushed.
"Absolutely not."
Ava crossed her arms.
"Then hotel security can review the rest of the footage."
Victoria laughed with forced contempt.
"You think I sneaked into your room dressed as a maid?"
Ava looked at the frozen image on the tablet.
"I think someone wearing your ring did."
Dominic moved closer.
"And I think you know exactly what was on that drive."
Victoria's eyes met his.
For the first time, her fear was visible.
Richard stepped between them.
"This ends now."
Dominic's voice remained quiet.
"You said that twenty-six years ago."
"And you should have listened."
Ava felt the threat in the sentence.
The lawyer heard it too.
She stepped forward.
"Mr. Halston, I advise you to choose your words carefully."
Richard gave her a dismissive glance.
"And I advise you to leave my son's wedding."
The hotel security manager cleared his throat.
"Mr. Halston, technically, we have been instructed to place the ballroom under controlled access until the preservation team finishes imaging the security system."
Victoria stared at him.
"You cannot lock us in."
"No one is locked in."
"Then open the doors."
"They are open."
"Then why are there guards outside?"
"To preserve evidence and keep unauthorized staff from entering restricted areas."
Victoria's expression turned ugly.
"On whose authority?"
The manager looked at Ava.
Ava almost wished he had not.
The whole room followed his gaze.
Victoria's humiliation deepened into hatred.
"You planned to take over this wedding."
Ava shook her head.
"No."
"Liar."
"I planned to marry your son."
Ava's voice cracked for the first time.
She hated that it did.
Adrian heard it.
His expression softened for half a heartbeat.
Then the walls went back up.
"Did you?"
Ava looked at him.
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"It means I don't know what was real anymore."
The ballroom suddenly felt too bright.
Ava remembered the first time Adrian had proposed.
Not the official proposal with the photographer and the champagne.
The real one had happened in her kitchen six months earlier when he stood barefoot beside a broken dishwasher and told her he could not imagine waking up without her.
She had believed him.
She still did.
That was the worst part.
"I loved you."
Adrian flinched at the past tense.
"Loved?"
Ava realized what she had said.
"I love you."
Victoria interrupted with a scoff.
"How convenient."
Adrian spun toward her.
"Stop talking."
The entire Halston family circle froze.
Victoria's face went white with rage.
"What did you say to me?"
"I said stop talking."
His voice shook now.
"You hit my wife, you may have stolen from her room, and every time I ask Dad a question, both of you look at each other before one of you lies."
Richard's expression hardened.
"Watch yourself."
Adrian laughed bitterly.
"There it is."
"There is what?"
"The warning."
He looked at Ava.
"He has been doing that my whole life."
Ava stayed silent.
Adrian turned back to his father.
"Any time I get close to something you don't want me to know, you tell me to watch myself."
Richard lowered his voice.
"This is not the place."
"Then pick a place."
"Tomorrow."
"No."
Richard stared at him.
Adrian's shoulders straightened.
"Tonight."
For the first time, Ava saw something in him she had been waiting years to see.
He was afraid of his father and refusing to obey anyway.
Dominic noticed too.
"Good."
Adrian turned sharply.
"Do not encourage me."
Dominic raised both hands slightly.
"Fair enough."
The hotel security manager received a message on his radio.
He listened, then looked at Ava.
"We found the housekeeping jacket."
Victoria stopped moving.
"Where?"
The manager answered without looking at her.
"In a service stairwell behind the bridal corridor."
"And the ring?"
"Inside the pocket."
Ava's stomach dropped.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Victoria recovered instantly.
"Someone planted it."
Richard nodded too quickly.
"Obviously."
Dominic smiled without humor.
"That is your defense?"
Victoria snapped back.
"It is the truth."
Ava looked at the manager.
"Was anything else in the pocket?"
He hesitated.
"A key card."
"Registered to whom?"
"A temporary vendor credential."
"Which vendor?"
The manager checked the tablet.
"Halston Event Security."
Adrian frowned.
"We didn't hire Halston Event Security."
Richard looked at him.
"I did."
The room went quiet again.
Ava felt the pieces shift.
"Why?"
Richard's answer came smoothly.
"Because this wedding had high-profile guests."
Dominic gave him a hard look.
"Or because you wanted people inside the hotel who answered only to you."
Richard ignored him.
Ava turned to the manager.
"Can you identify who used the credential?"
"The card itself was issued under an employee number."
"Whose?"
He enlarged the record.
Then his expression changed.
"That cannot be right."
"What?"
He looked at Richard.
"The employee number belongs to Mr. Halston's executive driver."
Richard's face remained unreadable.
Ava remembered the driver.
Miles Carter had worked for Richard for almost fifteen years.
He knew the family's schedules, private addresses, routines, and secrets.
Adrian pulled out his phone.
"I'm calling Miles."
Richard grabbed his arm.
"Don't."
Adrian stared at the hand gripping him.
"Why?"
Richard released him.
"Because if someone used his credential, he may be compromised."
Ava watched Richard's eyes.
He was not worried about Miles.
He was worried about what Miles might say.
Adrian made the call anyway.
It rang once.
Twice.
Then someone answered.
No one spoke.
Adrian frowned.
"Miles?"
A man's breathing came through the speaker.
Then a low voice said one sentence.
"Ask your father what happened to the baby in 2000."
The call ended.
Ava stared at Adrian.
Adrian stared at Richard.
Victoria looked as if all the blood had left her body.
Richard whispered one word.
"No."
Dominic's expression changed too.
Ava turned toward him.
"Dad?"
He looked at Victoria.
Then he looked at Adrian.
"You were born in 2000."
Adrian's face went blank.
Ava understood the implication a second before he did.
May you like
And when she looked at Victoria, the older woman's missing ring suddenly seemed like the smallest secret in the room.
