# Chapter 16: Race Against Time

Chaos erupted around them.
Adrian shouted for his security team.
“Get the truck cleared!” he roared.
He scooped Evelyn up into his arms effortlessly.
She buried her face in his neck, breathing through the intense wave of pain.
The armored truck had a spacious rear cabin.
Adrian laid her gently on the long leather bench seat.
“Drive to Memorial Hospital,” he ordered the driver.
“Do not stop for anything.”
The heavy truck lurched forward, sirens blaring from its grill.
Evelyn squeezed Adrian’s hand with bone-crushing force.
“It is too early,” she cried.
“I am only seven months.”
Adrian brushed the wet hair from her forehead.
His hands were shaking, but his voice was completely steady.
“You are going to be fine, Evie,” he promised.
“The baby is going to be fine.”
He pulled his phone out with his free hand.
“I am having the top neonatal specialists in the state flown to the roof right now.”
Another contraction hit her.
She arched her back, letting out a sharp scream.
The pain was blinding.
It felt as if her body was tearing itself apart in the darkness of the armored vehicle.
“Breathe, just breathe with me,” Adrian coaxed.
He pressed a kiss to her temple.
The truck swerved sharply to avoid debris on the highway.
Evelyn felt a terrifying rush of pressure.
“Something is wrong,” she gasped.
She looked down at her damp skirt.
In the dim cabin light, she could see a terrifying amount of red blood soaking through the fabric.
Adrian saw it too.
The color drained entirely from his face.
“Drive faster!” he screamed at the partition.
He tore his suit jacket off and pressed it firmly against her.
“Keep your eyes on me, Evelyn,” he demanded.
His voice was cracking now.
“Do not close your eyes.”
May you like
Evelyn tried to focus on his face.
But the edges of her vision were turning completely black.
