# Chapter 11: An Unlikely Ally

Evelyn took a step back.
She looked into Richard Cross’s cold blue eyes.
“How do you know about the ledger?” she asked.
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
Richard smiled, but it did not reach his eyes.
“Martin Keene is a very talkative man when he is given the right pain medication,” Richard replied.
He held out his hand.
“Give it to me, Evelyn.”
“It belongs to the family.”
Evelyn clutched the fabric of her coat.
The ledger was hidden in the lining.
She suddenly realized the horrifying truth.
Charles Vale hadn’t acted alone twelve years ago.
He had been the general manager, but he didn’t have the power to cover up a murder on his own.
He needed someone inside the Cross family to handle the police and the press.
He needed Richard.
“You helped him,” Evelyn gasped.
“You helped Charles kill your own sister-in-law.”
Richard’s smile vanished.
“She was going to leave my brother,” Richard said coldly.
“She was going to take Adrian and half of the company shares.”
He took a step toward Evelyn.
“I protected this family’s legacy.”
“Now hand over the book, or I will ensure Adrian spends the rest of his life in a federal penitentiary.”
Evelyn’s mind raced.
She was trapped in a police precinct, but the police were clearly on Richard’s payroll.
She needed a distraction.
She grabbed the metal chair and slammed it into the two-way mirror.
The glass shattered outward with a deafening crash.
Richard cursed and covered his face to protect his eyes.
Evelyn bolted through the open door.
She ran down the busy precinct hallway.
“Stop her!” Richard yelled from the room.
Uniformed officers turned in surprise.
Evelyn didn’t stop.
She pushed through the heavy glass doors and spilled out onto the rainy city street.
A sleek black car abruptly pulled up to the curb.
The rear door swung open.
Bianca Vale was sitting in the backseat.
“Get in,” Bianca ordered.

Evelyn hesitated.
“If you want to save Adrian, get in the damn car!” Bianca screamed.
