Chapter 4: Echoes in the Sub-Level

The metallic click bounced off the damp concrete walls of the underground tunnel, freezing Julian and Marcus in their tracks. The SWAT officers behind them immediately raised their assault rifles, sweeping their laser sights across the darkness.

"Step out where we can see you!" Marcus barked, his voice echoing menacingly down the corridor. "Hands on your head! NYPD!"

For a moment, there was no sound except for the steady drip of water from an overhead pipe and the heavy, ragged breathing of the men. Then, a slow, mocking chuckle echoed from the gloom.

"Always the dramatic entrance, cousin," a voice called out.

From the shadows near a rusted ventilation duct, a figure stepped into the pale beam of the flashlight. He was impeccably dressed in a custom charcoal suit, though his jacket was unbuttoned and his cuffs were rolled up. A thin, cynical smile played across his lips, and his eyes—the exact same shade of icy blue as Julian’s—sparked with malignant amusement.

Richard Vance.

"Richard," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. He didn't raise his weapon, but every muscle in his body was coiled like a spring. "I thought you were three thousand miles away."

"And miss the wedding of the century?" Richard chuckled, leaning casually against the damp concrete wall as if they were chatting at an upscale country club bar. "Please. Family must stick together, especially when one half of the family is about to inherit a multi-billion-dollar empire by midnight."

Marcus stepped forward, his badge held high in front of him. "Richard Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, domestic terrorism, and the bombing of a civilian venue. Hands behind your back."

Richard didn't move. Instead, he tilted his head, his smile widening slightly. "Arrest me? On what grounds, Captain? A wet handkerchief? A stray explosion in a dilapidated hotel maintenance shaft? You don't have a single piece of forensic evidence linking me to that blast. And as for the little poison incident upstairs..." Richard cast a sideways glance toward the dark tunnel behind him. "Well, Clara was always a bit unhinged. Everyone knows she was desperate for the Vance fortune. I was simply... facilitating her ambitions."

"You manipulated her," Julian said, taking a slow step forward. "You fed her the cyanide, you engineered the fake security clearance, and you promised her she’d walk away with half the company after my 'tragic accident'."

"Manipulated? Such a harsh word," Richard scoffed, checking his gold wristwatch. "Let’s call it... financial restructuring. Clara wanted luxury; I wanted control. It was a mutually beneficial arrangement. Too bad she lacked the stomach to finish the job."

"It's over, Richard," Marcus said, motioning for the SWAT officers to close in from the sides. "The tunnels are sealed. You're surrounded."

Richard let out a long, theatrical sigh. He reached into his jacket pocket, his fingers lingering inside for a fraction of a second too long.

"Surrounded?" Richard smiled. "Marcus, my dear captain, you really should check your radio communications before you talk about being surrounded."

Before Marcus could react, the radio on his shoulder crackled to life with a blast of violent static, followed by a voice that made the blood freeze in Julian’s veins:

“Captain Vance, this is dispatch. We have a major situation at Julian Vance’s private residence. The main vault has been breached, and all offshore accounts are being systematically transferred to an offshore shell corporation. I repeat—the estate is being cleaned out.”

Julian’s breath caught. The wedding, the poison, the bomb—it was all a massive, multi-layered distraction.

Richard laughed softly, pressing a small silver button hidden in the palm of his hand. "Tick-tock, cousin. You can arrest me all you want, but by the time we reach the precinct, you won't even be able to afford a cup of coffee."

WHOOSH!

May you like

A heavy steel security grate slammed down from the ceiling between Richard and the police officers, cutting off the corridor in a fraction of a second.

Julian lunged forward, slamming his fist against the iron bars just as Richard turned and vanished into the darkness with a chilling wave.
