Chapter 10: The Salt Flat Facility

The armored Mercedes tore across the desolate expanse of the White Salt Flats, its headlights cutting through the swirling dust storm like twin lances of light. The landscape was otherworldly—a vast, blinding white desert stretching to the horizon under a starless, ink-black sky.

In the back seat, Julian sat in absolute silence, turning the heavy gold pocket watch over and over in his palm. The GPS coordinates blinking on the digital screen were steady now, signaling they were less than two miles away from their destination.

"Julian," Marcus broke the silence, keeping his eyes on the road as he navigated the rough terrain. "We’re going in blind. If Helena and Richard have a fortified bunker out here, local police jurisdiction won't cover us. We need to call in federal backup."

"Federal backup?" Julian scoffed grimly. "Richard and my mother spent fifteen years buying politicians and judges in this state. By the time federal clearance goes through, we’ll be buried under six feet of salt."

"He's right," Elena chimed in from the passenger seat, her eyes glued to a laptop screen where she was decrypting the data file they had downloaded from the bank vault. "According to these financial ledgers, Vance Global has been funneling over fifty million dollars a year into an unregistered black-site facility known as 'Site Zero'. That's where they perfected the memory-rewiring protocols."

Julian turned his head to look at her. The harsh dashboard light illuminated the sharp contours of her face. "You remember something, don't you? From before the lab fire."

Elena swallowed hard, her fingers hesitating on the keyboard. "Fragments. Flashes of light, cold steel, and a woman with silver hair singing a lullaby while injecting something into my arm. I thought it was a nightmare for years. But it was real."

Before Julian could answer, the car’s navigation system beeped sharply.

Destination reached.

Up ahead, rising out of the flat, desolate salt crust like a brutalist concrete tomb, stood Site Zero. Massive, windowless, and surrounded by high electrified fences, the facility looked like a relic of the Cold War, untouched by time yet humming with modern electrical energy.

Marcus killed the engine and doused the headlights, coasting the Mercedes to a stop behind a thick concrete berm about two hundred yards from the main gate.

"Security cameras are active," Marcus noted, peering through a pair of tactical night-vision binoculars. "At least four armed guards on the perimeter patrol. And the front gate is biometric."

"Good thing we brought a key," Elena said softly, holding up the brass key Arthur Pendelton had hidden in his safety deposit box.

Julian looked at her, his expression softening slightly amidst the tension. "Stay behind me. If this goes sideways—"

"I didn't survive fifteen years of wondering who I was just to hide behind a billionaire groom," Elena interrupted with a fierce, unwavering smile. "Let's go find your mother."

They slipped out of the vehicle, melting into the shadows of the salt flats as they made their way toward the perimeter fence. But as they reached the outer perimeter, the heavy steel security lights suddenly flooded the entire compound with blinding white illumination, and a synthetic voice boomed from the overhead loudspeakers:

“Welcome home, Julian. We’ve been expecting you.”
