Chapter 15: The New Era

Six months had passed since the catastrophic events at Site Zero. The financial district had slowly recovered from the shockwaves of the Vance Global scandal, and a new board of directors had stepped in to restructure the multi-billion-dollar conglomerate from the ground up.
Julian Vance now sat at the head of the massive boardroom table on the 70th floor. The atmosphere was calm, professional, and entirely transparent—a stark contrast to the shadowy, corporate-espionage-driven regime of his father and cousin.
Seated to his immediate right was Elena, who had officially assumed the role of Chief Operations Officer. Her sharp intellect, combined with her intimate knowledge of the company’s internal security infrastructure, had made her indispensable in rebuilding Vance Global into an ethical, transparent technology leader.
"That concludes today's restructuring review," Julian announced, closing the leather-bound meeting folder. "Thank you, everyone. Meeting adjourned."
The board members murmured their agreements and began filing out of the room until only Julian and Elena remained. The heavy glass doors clicked shut, leaving them in quiet solitude.
Elena leaned back in her ergonomic leather chair, letting out a long, exhausted breath as she massaged her temples. "I never thought I’d say this, but running a legitimate multi-national corporation is infinitely more exhausting than pretending to be a hotel maid."
Julian smiled, standing up and walking over to her chair. He placed his hands gently on her shoulders, kneading the tight muscles at the base of her neck. "You're doing an extraordinary job. The board trusts you more than they trust me."
"That's because I don't carry a multi-billion-dollar family curse," Elena teased softly, tilting her head back to look up at him.
Julian’s smile softened. He reached down, gently brushing a lock of hair from her forehead, his thumb lingering over the small surgical scar behind her ear. Six months of peace, yet every time the wind howled against the skyscrapers, he remembered the red alert alarms of Site Zero.
"Do you ever think about what's out there?" Julian asked quietly. "About the rest of the Janus subjects?"
Elena’s expression darkened slightly. She reached into her blazer pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive—the only physical piece of data recovered from the secret lab that hadn't been uploaded to the public trust.
"Every day," Elena whispered. "The system purge broadcast our data to the public, but it also sent a beacon. Someone out there knows we survived. And they aren't finished yet."

Before Julian could answer, the secure terminal on the wall behind them suddenly sparked to life. The screens flickered black, and a single line of green text appeared across every monitor in the room:
“Project Janus is not a corporation. It is a bloodline. And the final heir has just arrived.”
